I've just been looking at his twitter feed.
What's in it for him? I genuinely can't see anything he has to gain from standing up for women, mostly because he is associating with left-wing campaigners, not his conservative-leaning constituents.

And he's not doing it in a disdainful "right to free speech" way. He seems happy and proud to associate with Venice et al.

Do I just shut up and send the guy a thank you letter or what?

Maybe he genuinely thinks sex matters?

VickyEadie · 01/11/2018 18:07

I still find myself astonished at how many Tory MPs have drunk the Kool-Aid on this. That thread about the identikit response from a woman MP is breathtaking in its lack of awareness of the wider issues which might affect - y'know - the MP's fellow women.

FloralBunting · 01/11/2018 18:09

Not everyone operates from basic self interest. It's easy to be cynical when surrounded by utter selfishness in this debate, but decent people do exist.

I'm off to All Saints Mass to remind myself of what motivates me. Have hope, good women. It's a good thing to stand up for women as a whole, and plenty do still know that.

LassWiADelicateAir · 01/11/2018 18:32

I don't think he has any motives beyond he thinks it is the right thing to do. I doubt his conservative leaning constituents will take exception provided it does not interfere with his constituency work. Davies seems to be a good constituency MP.

There will be constituents who support him on the free speech issue.

borntobequiet · 01/11/2018 18:42

When speaking on the radio about the left wing feminists he was working with, he sounded simultaneously somewhat bemused and quite pleased.

LassWiADelicateAir · 01/11/2018 18:53

There will be constituents who support him on the free speech issue

Quoting myself, it doesn't diminish his integrity but I'd put money on 100% of those who voted for him supporting him on the free speech aspect.

charlestonchaplin · 01/11/2018 19:04

Why do you assume a gender-critical position is exclusively the preserve of left-wingers? In fact it's possible more left-wingers support the proposed GRA reform. Social conservatives (not necessarily political Conservatives) also have issues with the GRA reform for a variety of reasons.

BernardBlacksWineIcelolly · 01/11/2018 19:10

I admit it is a bit baffling

hearing him on the radio I just can't imagine him being pals with Venice Allen

I do genuinely think he's doing it because he believes standing up for women in this way is the right thing to do

UnderMajorDomoMinor · 01/11/2018 19:19

Because being right wing doesn’t make you evil and being left wing doesn’t make you good. The left seem to think they have the moral high ground on everything just because they are left wing but actually a progressive outlook can make you much more susceptible to jumping on anything new as if it’s new it must be progress and therefore good.

There are plenty of good tories.

Clonakilty · 01/11/2018 19:24

He’s a good man and is concerned about the raped and abused women who are going to be put at risk by self-identifying trans women.

AverageAvenger · 01/11/2018 19:26

I’ve thanked him. I really admire what he’s doing. I’ve been continually surprised about who gets it and who doesn’t. For me personally it’s been mostly Tories and men and then women who are traditionally Labour voters and now without a political home.

53rdWay · 01/11/2018 19:29

I met him on a different issue (not constituency politics stuff) a few years before all this kicked off. I disagree with probably most of his politics, but he does come across as a decent bloke.

FFSFFSFFS · 01/11/2018 19:46

I sent him an email thanking him. I don't think this issue is left or right wing - I think most women's issues aren't at the end of the day - they are patriarchy v genuine equality.

The left are just as misogynistic as the right - often more so.

My impression is he is just doing what he thinks is right. I have enormous respect for that.

QuietContraryMary · 01/11/2018 20:07

Not sure I understand your point OP.

He's conservative (with a small c). Not believing that people can change sex is orthodox conservative thought.

The fact that the people he is working with might be left-wing is no different to say, a conservative working with feminists on, say, pornography, or prostitution.

WhereYouLeftIt · 01/11/2018 20:09

"What's in it for him?"
Same as what's in it for me - the ability to look myself in the face in the mirror and not feel shame.

He understand the problem. He gets it. He could look away as others know they are doing; but he chooses to be able to live with himself. I just wish there were more people with his courage.

hackmum · 01/11/2018 20:17

It’s interesting. I bet loads of his Tory colleagues agree with him, but no one else has the guts to speak out. Sometimes you find courage in the most unexpected places.

MinesaBottle · 01/11/2018 20:28

I imagine he thinks it’s the right thing to do, much like Graham Linehan. Which earns my respect, even though I’m not and never could be a Tory.

NotZenEnough · 01/11/2018 20:51

He said a few words when Linda and Venice left Westminster magistrates court. I was impressed.

I really do wish there could be a Labour MP sticking their neck out in a similar way.

MacaroonMama · 01/11/2018 21:13

Bemused but pleased was how DD seemed at the House of Commons meeting in March. I think he thinks it is the fair position to take.

My MP (male, Tory, white, 60s) has replied promptly to both my letters and met with me - and was v sympathetic. Actually listened. Properly responded to my questions in my letter. Could see the legal complexities, but could see v clearly the danger to women.

I have only ever voted Labour or Green, and doubt he and I would agree politically on much - but we agreed on this. Interesting.

scotsheather · 01/11/2018 21:15

I thought the same. He's hardly of the political position for our campaign but he must see something in it for him. Maybe he thinks we can win??? Says a lot most standing up for us seem to be male tories.

rightreckoner · 01/11/2018 21:31

I have also emailed to thank him. I don’t suppose we agree on many things but I have no reason to doubt his integrity. And as a non Tory I would say that it is notable that the real shut down of debate has been in the Labour Party followed by the LibDems and the Greens. Tories marginally more open on this despite them pushing this nonsensical GRA at Cabinet level.

I’m not a tribal person but this whole shitshow has made me even less so. My natural tribes couldn’t give a shit about me or my DD. They’ve lost my vote - indefinitely.

VintageFur · 01/11/2018 21:40

The same dai Davies that's been in support of women since (at least) cologne?

I'm disappointed once again by the "oh but he's a Tory I could never agree with a Tory blah".

scotsheather · 01/11/2018 21:46

I'm disappointed once again by the "oh but he's a Tory I could never agree with a Tory blah".

Its not a criticism of him and he should be admired for standing up where others won't. I just wish more from left leaning parties or even more moderate tories would do likewise. He is quite looney right on lots of things (surprisingly measured on this issue) and we don't want considered that way.

Waterparc · 01/11/2018 22:14

I think he must be hoping that, when the lunacy ends, he'll finally get credit for being the one person who spoke out. And why not?

Is anyone sending him a Posie/Sandy Draws Badly Christmas card?

OP posts:
BeUpStanding · 01/11/2018 22:15

I've sent him a thank you card. In it I said that I disagreed with him on most other issues, but that I couldn't thank him enough for standing up for women and girls.
