No women's toilets in uni building

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 01/11/2018 09:05

Just went to use the toilets in one of the fancy newer buildings at uni.

Was deeply confused that they had men's / unisex / disabled but no women's toilets (I checked the unisex toilets were two cubicles (open at top and bottom) in an enclosed room with sinks outside the cubicles). Then I went to the toilet elsewhere.

This is the first time I have been directly affected by this bullshit so was angry enough have fired off a confused email to (I hope) the right people.

I'll let you know what they say.

Makes it quite clear where their priorities lie

JudgeRulesNutterButter · 01/11/2018 09:08

They seriously had those categories? Men, unisex & disabled? No equivalent women unisex disabled trio elsewhere??

Sorry for querying but I’m in disbelief that men are seen as the category needing their own private area and women aren’t...

SuburbanRhonda · 01/11/2018 09:11

I just don’t go if the toilets are unisex.

On the plus side, my pelvic floor is in better shape than it ever was Smile

happydappy2 · 01/11/2018 09:13

That is totally unacceptable-good luck following this up.

adulthumanandtired · 01/11/2018 09:14

We all just need to start using the men’s if this bullshit continues.

Sportsnight · 01/11/2018 09:15

It’s like they’ve left menstruation out of the equation. For 3 weeks a month I probably wouldn’t mind using a unisex toilet. I’m peri-menopausal and my periods are HEAVY. If there’s a chance I’m going to need to wash blood off my hands to the wrist, I really don’t want to do it in mixed company. Separate cubicles with sinks are a godsend, but shared washrooms...

PipGoesPop · 01/11/2018 09:16

Name and shame. They MUST provide single SEX facilities under the EA as far as I'm aware.

PurpleOva · 01/11/2018 09:18

Not floor to ceiling is a very strange way to have unisex toilets. Who designs these things?

We have plenty of unisex loos around here, but they are separate cubicles containing sinks, or at least have floor to ceiling doors on separate cubicles with sinks outside.

I assume the "Men's" is because they contain urinals? Which I'd rather not have in unisex facilities thanks!

Bonkers though, I don't understand what people are thinking when they come up with these ideas?

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 01/11/2018 09:18

It is possible they do on a different floor. Its not a building I'm very familiar with, but my need was fairly urgent so I followed the signposting to the toilets, and that is what I found.

I decided it was safer to go to a building I did know, rather than to explore the other floors.

Given the layout and the other options I presume they simply added a men's sign to the existing women's toilets.

DD was laughing at this on Instagram. I assume it's manufactured but God help us if it's not.

Fucksake. It's really happening isn't it? Angry

ARosebyAnyOtherNameChange · 01/11/2018 09:26

Care to say which university? I'm seriously considering recommending that DD applies only to those that still know why women need single-sex facilities.

BettyDuMonde · 01/11/2018 09:35

We need a public list of institutions that have made questionable planning decisions like this - it’s anti woman and people should be aware of it.

Extra third spaces - good.
Removal of woman-only spaces = unnacceptable.

deydododatdodontdeydo · 01/11/2018 09:41

It is possible they do on a different floor.

I would check this before making a complaint.
It's not unusual to have only men's toilets on one floor, only women's on the next, etc.

rightreckoner · 01/11/2018 09:45

This is why I’ll never identify as Canadian

thatdamnwoman · 01/11/2018 09:46

OP, surely the Muslim women have something to say about this?

Needmoresleep · 01/11/2018 09:47

Yes, I recently met an academic who works in a new build. No women's toilets. She feels very sorry for female students from overseas or conservative backgrounds who are forced to go to another building.

The Mail today reports that three smaller Universities are on the edge of bankruptcy, with more to follow. To the extent that Universities are businesses, you would think that University authorities would be sensitive to students from cultures where education is valued, but where wokeness is not on the agenda. The move to the UK is hard enough, and other countries can offer more supportive environments.

Badstyley · 01/11/2018 09:51

In situations such as this I’d be tempted to do a dirty protest, and empty my moon cup down the sink in full view of everybody, men included. Honestly…

WorkingItOutAsIGo · 01/11/2018 09:55

I am for my sins a uni student and am amused to notice that at my uni (which has mens, women’s and unisex provision) there is NEVER anyone in the unisex toilets. I watched a man walk in and walk straight back out. People are voting with their feet. Neither men nor women like them.

YetAnotherSpartacus · 01/11/2018 09:56

I can't actually make out the signs in the new building where I work so I slip across to an older building to a little known toilet out the back that looks like it is in a staff only area (it isn't). Bliss. If I had the guts I'd sneak in at night (I have a pass) and change all of the signs that are not either male or female to snowflakes. Having said that, I was in a restaurant recently and the choices were a cat or a dog. I approached staff and said 'I'm a cat, right?' and they said 'yes, a lot of people ask that!' @@.

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 01/11/2018 09:57

Badstyley, please don't call that a dirty protest! We all know that it would have the exact same effect on some men, but nonetheless, if they are grossed out by menstruation, that doesn't mean it's dirty.

R0wantrees · 01/11/2018 09:59

THey aren't 'unisex' or 'gender neutral' toilets, they are mixed sex

PurpleOva · 01/11/2018 09:59

Where you have both, unisex and single sex facilities, it is common courtesy to add a little sign saying something like "The nearest Women's toilets can be found at..."

How hard is that to include really?

If they do have women only loos upstairs, they should include a notice about that on the downstairs unisex loos.

PurpleOva · 01/11/2018 10:01

Unisex is designed to be used by both sexes. I don't think that is the wrong term to use. Although, I also don't think the toilets described were well designed to be used by both sexes!
