Any indication who they will have as contributors?

AbsintheFriends · 28/10/2018 21:16

Hmm. About fecking time. I wonder who will be presenting.

Jane Garvey seemed to disappear from lots of her regular slots after the GRA discussion. I wondered if maintaining the BBC bias was getting a bit much, but that might be massive projection.

scepticalwoman · 28/10/2018 21:25

There'll be the trans group stating that the stats are fake, there'll be the trans group stating that the drugs are safe and have no long term impact, the trans group talking about all the bigotry of women objecting to this, the Mermaid's parent self justifying and then maybe..... a woman might speak be talked over repeatedly. All in the interests of balance.

I hope to be proved wrong - but this is the BBC so don't hold out much hope.

nauticant · 28/10/2018 21:41

My prediction is to hear that we're evolving into a more inclusive society and it's the most obvious thing in the world that all those young transmen are now coming out when previously they'd have had to endure the living hell of being forced to live as young women. (You wouldn't wish that on your worst enemy.)

There'll be a gender critical sort who'll operate in a curtailed discussion and struggle to explain why they're not a bigot. Analysis and science will not be at the forefront of this discussion.

Budgieinaberet · 28/10/2018 22:50

Sceptical I think you have summed it up correctly.
I used to listen to R4 a lot. Now I barely put it on.
Nauticant I have just said something very similar on another thread.
Being a girl is not as much fun, puberty is hell.

IdaBWells · 28/10/2018 23:04

I have absolutely ZERO faith in women’s hour or the BBC. It will be another farce with:

  1. Prerecorded interview or statement from Stonewall and or Mermaids which will be inaccurate and will go uncontested.
  2. Transwoman or Transwomen dominating the conversation and interrupting other contributors.
  3. Actual women being the minority of invited speakers and treated with hostility.

The End.

Sicario · 28/10/2018 23:18

I too am very disappointed with Women's Hour. What a cop out. Women's Hour used to be a special place for ONE HOUR and it used to mean something. I've tuned out since the galling self ID pseudo-coverage. Hoping things will change.

Budgieinaberet · 28/10/2018 23:19

I went past the BBC at lunchtime recently. The people coming out were overwhelmingly white middle class.
I think their figures of TG people are probably bollocks.

I can just see John Humphreys, and Jenni Murray getting forms asking what gender they are, and both of them going
This is fucking bollocks I don't have a gender.
Woke guy decides that they must be trans.

R0wantrees · 29/10/2018 10:05

Radio 4 has been interesting listening this morning.
THe last segment on the Today program was with Catherine Meyer (WEP) about the minimising of sexual harrassment as 'banter'.

I think Sarah Vine joined the discussion too.

Then a program interviewing Helena Kennedy about her book, 'Eve was Shamed'

R0wantrees · 29/10/2018 10:06

Jane Garvey is stressing WH hopes this will be balanced and asking people to listen first before joining the debate.
Hmm

AbsintheFriends · 29/10/2018 10:22

A tiny, optimistic part of me thinks that JG is a secret MNer and the 'asking people to listen first' is her giving us a sign that she has tied up the woke bros and this is going to be a proper discussion.

It's Monday morning though. The week has not yet worn me down.

Here goes. Stephanie Davies Arai!

R0wantrees · 29/10/2018 10:24

Jane Garvey is pushing that 'sex is observed'

R0wantrees · 29/10/2018 10:29

Lewis is a friend a collaberator with the art projects by Fox and Owl.
Lewis featured on the Channel 4 program, 'My transsexual summer'

AbsintheFriends · 29/10/2018 10:32

Too much time spent on Lewis, talking about Lewis.

AbsintheFriends · 29/10/2018 10:36

This is good, though. I think people who are hearing about this properly for the first time would be getting a clear picture. And not a happy one.

ElfID · 29/10/2018 10:38

Tavistock woman not coming off well at all.

AbsintheFriends · 29/10/2018 10:40

Stephanie D-A brilliant. And Jane G doing a good job of drilling down - I'd say she gets it.

WAHF · 29/10/2018 10:44

Gah, I was part way through listening but I've been disturbed! Got to the bit that when Stephanie was coming on. Lewis was TRA bingo and Travistock woman did not represent her views well, v wishy washy. I actually thought JG was doing quite well. I'll have to listen to the podcast to catch up.

AbsintheFriends · 29/10/2018 10:50

I thought that was good. Too much of the time was allocated to Lewis, talking personally about 'born in the wrong body', 'known since I was 4' etc etc when the issue was supposed to be ROGD, but JG kept the studio discussion on track and asked good questions.

Polly Carmichael came across as being far less clued up than Stephanie Davies Arrai, and tried to minimise all the concerns raised by SDA and JG. Notable how many questions she began to answer with an airy, dismissive 'Well...'

ARosebyAnyOtherNameChange · 29/10/2018 10:50

I thought Polly Carmichael did come off well - in fact that they all did. There is no way that Carmichael could go into work and help severely distressed children (the 80% or whatever who don't go on to treatment, as well as the 20% who do) if she'd been on national radio saying that they were probably all just confused, autistic or messed up by society.

For a small number of children, I've no doubt it's the least worst option, and those will be some of the children she sees. They have to trust her.

ARosebyAnyOtherNameChange · 29/10/2018 10:52

And I don't agree that PC would be less clued up than Stephanie. She must have seen a wider range of transgender children than Stephanie, who is basically a concerned parent with a strong streak of common sense and humanity, as far as I can see.

NaturalBornWoman · 29/10/2018 10:52

Stephanie was good, and I think JG gets it. The Tavistock person was annoying, didn't have stats and didn't come over well.

ElfID · 29/10/2018 10:54

Lewis was a weird choice, would have been better to have a parent of or a teen who had experienced ROGD.

PC did minimise, and avoided answering simple questions. She is in a difficult position, yes, but plenty of "well meaning" therapists have done plenty of damage, historically.

AbsintheFriends · 29/10/2018 10:55

I absolutely agree that PC was in a difficult position, with a responsibility to the patients she deals with face to face. However, SDA was very sharp with facts and stats which PC obviously didn't want to dwell on, which was telling in itself.

AornisHades · 29/10/2018 11:01

Agree that Lewis wasn't really on topic for ROGD. Apart from that it was one of the better pieces I've heard. Polly was very reluctant to be drawn on facts but I take her point that the huge majority of children progressing from blockers to hormones might mean their gate keeping is working. But we can't know that.
S D-A did very well. Wish she could have explained more about the sterilisation issue for listeners who are new to it.
