Menopause , women? Women? This post is soooo problematic. Did you not know, it's not only women who get the menopause, men have ovaries too, and get the menopause. Some women don't have menopause, they have a penis. This post is transphobic, and bigoted! The correct language you're allowed to use would be "people who have ovaries" . And you didn't even bother to put a trigger warning for your use of gendered language! My goodness, how transphobic, thought you'd been taught better! More training needed.

Strangely, the menopause doesn't seem to be claimed by transwomen much. I don't know why, maybe it's not sexy enough?

AncientLights · 23/10/2018 15:05

I don't know, noeffingidea, it looks like they have some plans:

The next Labour Govt will commit to educating the next generation, training for medical professionals and mandatory workplace policies

plenty of scope there for the brave and stunning of a certain age, I'm looking at you Sue Pascoe, to develop teaching programmes for the menopausal TW. They will, of course, suffer way more than we do.

Avegemitesandwich · 23/10/2018 15:20

Yeah no one seems to be bothered about ensuring that the menopause is 'inclusive'. Funny that.....

JellySlice · 23/10/2018 16:46

How about withdrawing hormone treatment in their late forties? Then TW can experience one of the most sublime joys of womanhood...

2BorNot2Bvocal · 23/10/2018 16:53

Of course they don't want the menopause. That would be a reminder of biological sex. Maybe if we rename it the womenopause it will be coveted ?

R0wantrees · 23/10/2018 17:00

The correct language you're allowed to use would be "people who have ovaries"

Dawn will need to tread very carefully here and her educators will have their work cut out for them.

"Many women experience surgical menopause following the removal of ovaries.

Around 30,500 hysterectomies were carried out in England in 2012 and 2013. It's more common for women aged 40-50 to have a hysterectomy."
www.nhs.uk/conditions/hysterectomy/

Additionally there are women who have had bilateral salpingo-oophorectomies. (removal of ovaries and fallopian tubes)

misscockerspaniel · 23/10/2018 17:37

And this is from a politician who would be a minister if Labour was in government Shock

NothingTraLaLa · 23/10/2018 17:45

"For the many, not the few"

Ironic, since Labour spend an awful lot of time pandering to the few rather than the many. I appreciate this is not an exclusively Labour position...

JellySlice · 23/10/2018 18:34

Do you suppose she realises that, in using sane, accessible, accurate language, she has committed transphobia and broken all her own guidelines?

Lefthanddown · 23/10/2018 18:49

I'm sure they'll come a time when the menopause is more widely appropriated; a friend recently told of an incident where a woman spoke of issues with the menopause/HRT and a transwoman said something along the lines of 'ask me anything about HRT, I've been through just about every type of pill as I've been menopausal for years!'

'ask me anything about HRT, I've been through just about every type of pill as I've been menopausal for years!'

The R in HRT is significant as it means replacement!

Taking cross-sex hormones is very different.

ijustwannadance · 23/10/2018 19:37

They don't want menopause. That's for old hags, not young sexy "girls"

AspieAndProud · 23/10/2018 19:41

No, but didn’t we have a link to a transwoman posting photos of her developing breasts as she goes through ‘puberty’ for the second time?

heresyandwitchcraft · 23/10/2018 19:46

Yes. The language is so important.
I think the current narrative is that cross-sex hormones are equivalent to HRT, because the trans person's body is just "not producing the hormone enough" (because they're the opposite sex). I've seen it compared to the need to take insulin for diabetes or thyroid tablets for hypothyroidism. So the acknowledgment of the fact that the trans person's natural hormone levels are actually a completely normal function of being male or female is obscured.

I am also not sure that trans women ever usually stop taking cross-sex hormones, so they don't really experience the menopause in that sense?

MadamBatty · 23/10/2018 19:50

I had a trans woman call me an ugly menopausal old hag. I said thanks 😄 I think they thought it was the worst insult they could give me. I embrace my hag ness

R0wantrees · 23/10/2018 20:13

I'm sure there will be medical need for some transwomen to stop taking cross sex hormones.

I do wonder how medics square the research and good practice with regards the length of time women are advised to take oestrogen (as HRT).
there is a balance of potential risk v potential benefit for the individual.

For transwomen ceasing taking cross sex hormones this would of course lead to side effects.
These side effects would not be the menopause.

heresyandwitchcraft · 23/10/2018 20:24

Excellent points, R0
I might take a proper look at this question of hormones and best practice sometime, because it's quite interesting.

R0wantrees · 23/10/2018 20:30

Its also worth considering that the side effects of taking testosterone are well known eg in context of steroid abuse.

Anyone who has done drug training will have been advised of these.

rememberatime · 23/10/2018 20:31

They would have to call it the "manopause" - they just paused being a man for a while

Trousered · 23/10/2018 20:32

Wikipedia

A variety of different sex-hormonal medications are used in feminizing hormone therapy for transgender women.[1][2][3][4] These include estrogens to induce feminization and suppress testosterone levels; antiandrogens such as androgen receptor antagonists, antigonadotropins, GnRH modulators, and 5α-reductase inhibitors to further oppose the effects of androgens like testosterone; and progestogens for various possible though uncertain benefits.[1][2][3][4]

This is NOT hrt.

FesteringCarbuncle · 23/10/2018 21:13

Of course TAs aren't interested in the menopause
They are 50 year old girls doing girl stuff

KataraJean · 23/10/2018 21:21

I think there are two things at play here

As posters have already said, poster transwomen are aiming for a youthful sexy feminine presentation, which does not square with an older woman’s condition.

But equally importantly, the language around cervix- h a v e r s (my autocorrect will not let me write that) and pregnant people is to be include female born people who transition to male, who still need medical care in these contexts - the demographic is young and therefore not of menopause age. There are not fifty something females transitioning to male in significant numbers.

Presumably if a woman transitions to male and takes cross sex hormones, they will not then experience a natural menopause (I presume)

ChiaraRimini · 23/10/2018 21:21

They are pursuing a male fantasy of hyper-sexualised femininity. However given that some of them pretend to have periods, no doubt they will also be claiming to have a menopause became feelz, while continuing to take the drugs.
Given the concerns about HRT increasing cancer risk, I do wonder what the long term effects of taking cross sex hormones are.
