blogs.spectator.co.uk/2018/10/even-our-mps-are-afraid-of-the-transgender-mob/

But the fact that MPs aren’t really talking much about the gender issue doesn’t mean they aren’t thinking about it. They are, and they’re worried.

They are not alone!

GulagsMyArse · 15/10/2018 14:14

I get what he is saying, but they do need to do their job, for God sake. All it takes if for a few to speak out and give the rest courage.

GreenGloves · 15/10/2018 14:34

I'm always hearing about MP whatsapp groups, can't they all band together on one of those and come out against self-ID all at the same time?

Redkeyboard · 15/10/2018 14:35

Great article.

I understand people being genuinely frightened to speak up or being strategic.

What makes me really depressed is normally balanced politicians who have only listened to lobby groups like Mermaids and Stonewall and are now closed to looking at critical analyses of the evidence and data they’ve fed them.

Redkeyboard · 15/10/2018 14:41

So conversations like:

WOMEN: it’s not a good idea to put teenage boys in with guides without telling parents

POLITICIAN: stop demonising trans people

W: we’re not, we’re saying girls need privacy, accidental underage pregnancy goes happen and unfortunately stats show girls are sexually abused by and even raped by boys on occasion

POLITICIAN: stop demonising trans people they receive terrible abuse

W: that’s awful but it’s really not what we’re doing, how can we find a sensible way that looks after all children’s interests

Etc

sydarthur · 15/10/2018 14:44

Exactly, if they are so frightened to speak surely that should tell them how important it is to speak. A group together could work so well, especially as the issues are so multifareous they could support one another in offering multiple, nuanced positions: sports, prisons, refuges, schools, child protection, Mermaids, sexism... they may not all directly relate to the GRA but they've coming spilling out alongside it. And even on the GRA explicitly they could support each other coming out in offering difderent ideas and solutions to work towards an end goal. This should be about problem solving not battling.

Redshoeblueshoe · 15/10/2018 14:47

I have a plan.
Sky want leaders debates.
I vote we go down market.
Let's get them all on Jeremy Kyle.
Then everyone who has preached TWAW can do a lie detector.
Not just politicians but all the other famous people shouting.

TimeLady · 15/10/2018 14:50

My best guess is that, behind the scenes, they will be pressuring Mordaunt to make the minimum of changes as 'a result of studying the responses to the consultation'. I expect the two year period to be reduced, as a sop to Stonewall.

That way, no-one has to put their head over the parapet.

Prisons had swung it so prisons will be couched in what ifs and exceptions etc.

Most people are othering about jails and prisoners so won't relate.

The safeguarding is under the public's radar and needs outed - NHS and schools are already obeying a law that doesn't exist yet and seems to contradict the equality act, wtf....

Public needs to realise this affects EVERY CHILD every day and has done for quite some time.

That's a pretty terrifying article. Lobby groups should be we be allowed into the position where they actually dictate government policy and dissent is punished. Something is rotten in the state of Denmark.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 15/10/2018 16:14

Ag - lobby groups should not

Ereshkigal · 15/10/2018 16:55

Oh yes! That I would love to see.

I have an account and I can't believe my phone logged me out
Bloody hell
Thanks for posting

BabyItsAWildWorld · 15/10/2018 16:58

Anyone able to share this?
I'd like to send it to my MP.

TimeLady · 15/10/2018 16:59

We've been asked not to post The Spectator articles in full.

OP posts:
Charliethefeminist · 15/10/2018 17:00

Yeah I agree with that. It's not even expensive to subscribe. Cheap as chips.

WokerThanWoke · 15/10/2018 17:02

Baby I think if you register you can read a few articles a week/month?

BabyItsAWildWorld · 15/10/2018 17:06

Done, thank you!

scepticalwoman · 15/10/2018 18:58

Yet another excellent article from James Kirkup.

I don't know what we can do about our silent MPs. I suppose it is some comfort to know that they are concerned and of course, they are right to be concerned. We have seen the extreme reactions of many activists to ordinary women, and just as I know many women are at risk of real harm from these extremists, so I suspect could be some MPs.
BUT MPs do have access to security and police advice and support - while women have to face police forces like West Yorkshire and Manchester where some officers appear to have no hesitation in "taking sides" going by their biased tweets and comments.
Sad

HawkeyeInConfusion · 15/10/2018 20:52

I'm getting fed up with the silence of the MPs (with a few honourable exceptions). I get that they may be scared after what happened to Jo Cox, but:

  • if they are so frightened by these AWA to fear for their own lives, wtaf are the doing thinking about giving these self same groups unfettered access to women and girls in what were previously single sex spaces?
  • by being silent they are forcing (extra)ordinary women (and some men) to step up and do what the MPs should be doing. They are forcing others to take the risks they are not prepared to take themselves.

I'm afraid my patience has worn very thin when it comes to MPs.

PineappleSunrise · 15/10/2018 20:59

There's a link to Jonny Best's petition in that story, too. Thanks, James!

BlackForestCake · 15/10/2018 21:44

Isn’t Question Time a good opportunity for someone to ask “Do the panel believe that women have penises?"

Serfisafleur · 15/10/2018 22:09

Thanks for sharing the article

BiologyIsReal · 15/10/2018 22:11

Politicians deal with contentious issues all the time, yet this one seems to scare them disproportionately. You have to ask how a lobby group representing diddly squat of the population can inject terror into grown men and women.

And yes, if politicians are being cowed by the thought of going against this cult what the hell would they be doing voting to expose half the country's population and the country's children to these batshit fruit loops.

It's this ^ sort of thing that is actually swaying me towards tin-foil-hattery. There is obviously some real power behind the TRAs.
