Just seen him referenced on a Fionne thread, so I looked him up. Erm, wtf? Grin He’s taking the piss, right? Is he taking the piss? Is it satire? Or not...because actually quite useful make-up tips. But what’s with the accent? I am so confused. Grin

By “the islands” I mean the Hebrides. John is from Lewis, and sounds it. He’s hamming it up a bit (actually, a lot!).

TheWholeHog · 08/10/2018 09:39

@tediousnamechange Shit I thought he was Irish. See! That's partly why I was so confused! I was watching the Christmas message thinking, "he says fillum so he must be Irish, but wtf is up with the rest of the accent?".

Now that PPs have explained it's actually a fairly normal Scottish accent, I am less confused.

There is a serenity about him... and he has an awful lot of very clean brushes. And he knows the number, brand, shade of all the brushes and products.

SophoclesTheFox · 08/10/2018 09:41

My dad says fillum, many scots of his generation do, though it’s less common now, I think. He also says po-yum.

As a scot outside scotland, people thinking our accents are weird touches a bit of a nerve in me. I got the piss taken out of me only this weekend and called a “jock” which I bloody loathe!

picklemepopcorn · 08/10/2018 09:42

I think if he had a more common accent, it would be clear that he speaks in a very camp way. I'm reminded of a friend in Wales, when we were teens, who dwelled on certain sounds and and had a very arch way of speaking.

picklemepopcorn · 08/10/2018 09:43

It's a wonderful accent though, Sophocles, and I'm sorry you get mickied for it. I love the precision of certain Scottish accents.

SadieLancaster · 08/10/2018 09:46

“And I’m going in with a Laura Mercier eyeshadow brush number 7379633579658643, blending upwards ever so slightly, to ensure seamlessness”

I adore him 💖💖

Outfoxed · 08/10/2018 09:47

He is mesmerising and incredibly calming until the point where he chooses such over complicated words and phrases that the sentence doesn’t make sense anymore, it’s like the episode of friends when Joey writes a letter using a thesaurus

Thanks pickle!

Some of the island accents do lilt in a way that sounds quite Irish. Not surprising really, given where they are Grin

TheWholeHog · 08/10/2018 09:58

I kind of wonder if it was a woman doing this if we’d be wondering if it was a joke? This is where being who you are not being accepted thing starts to irk me.

To be fair, I would wonder of anyone who says "I am a couture work of art" if they are taking the piss or not, whatever their sex.

@SophoclesTheFox As a scot outside scotland, people thinking our accents are weird touches a bit of a nerve in me. As I've said before, it's not just the accent, it's the weird over-enunciation that makes it sound really -fake- unusual.

Although I did once have a boyfriend from Glasgow, and we were mutually baffled by each other's accents. For two people with English as a mother tongue, we had an extraordinarily difficult time communicating.

Oh, strike-through fail.

The Highlands and Islands accent is very lyrical. It's such a beautiful and 'mystical' kind of place, it's just possible that John is really an elf.

IamEarthymama · 08/10/2018 10:07

He reminds me of Miss Jean Brodie and of Lucia in the E F Benson in the Mapp and Lucia novels.
I think it's probably just an over emphasis of his real character.
I am sure Boy George and Bowie put as much effort into their makeup

Can someone link to fillums share he talks about other subjects please, I only found makeup?

I have only watched one video, he was making less elongated cat eyes, I was mesmerised by him.
I used to spend ages doing my makeup in the 1980s but this is a whole new level.

If my eyelids hadn't succumbed to gravity I would be trying his tips, for sure.😊

TheWholeHog · 08/10/2018 10:19

This is the Christmas one: www.youtube.com/watch?time_continue=1&v=rjkawx9MoHE

I think he's channeling Nigella here actually, having watched it again.

If he's from the Islands surely he's Chon McLean :)

ThisIsTheFirstStep · 08/10/2018 11:08

sophocles I too am prickly about people commenting on my accent. Even the nice comments come across as quite patronising sometimes.

speakout · 08/10/2018 11:12

I hate the comments too.

Working in Buckinghamshire not a day would pass without someone commenting on my accent or trying to imitate it.
I have a middle class Edinburgh accent, so not particularly strong.

People would think it so funny mocking the way I spoke.

picklemepopcorn · 08/10/2018 11:19

He's only 24! I think perhaps his youth makes the rather mannered presentation seem less real. Professor McGonagal could get away with it! I'm remembering the Dowager Duchess in Downton Abbey.

picklemepopcorn · 08/10/2018 11:34

I wouldn't have wanted to die without telling anybody, I thought it was a kind thing to do, to schedule it in.. to give my friends time to process the grief...

(He had a cold).

Love him.

FairNotFair · 08/10/2018 11:41

I clicked on this thread expecting a feminist deconstruction of "Die Hard" Blush

SophoclesTheFox · 08/10/2018 12:25

Even the nice comments come across as quite patronising sometimes.

True, that. I smile inwardly when people go on about the magical, mystical nature of Scotland and think "aye, you've never been to Wester Hailes on a February morning, have you" Grin

I don't mean to be a grump, it can be nice to be exotic.

KataraJean · 08/10/2018 12:26

So, it has taken me all these posts to realise ‘fillum’ is film? Is that correct?

SophoclesTheFox · 08/10/2018 12:27

Aye, katara, that's right.

And po-yum is poem.

noraclavicle · 08/10/2018 12:53

I could watch him and listen to that beautiful lilt all day! “My forehead is rather large, it could be mistaken for a small country - in fact, just the other day I discovered an embassy there ...” Grin
