'If we see anything, we're calling the police'

Who 'we' are and what 'anything' means is unclear.

I actually find this campaign a bit sinister behind its virtue signalling wokeness.

And I don't know what they hope to achieve. No racist, bigot or homophobe is going to watch this and stop being a racist, bigot or homophobe.

Also notable is the fact that 'women' are absent from the campaign.

It is sinister in the extreme.

We're watching you. We're listening to you. We're reporting you.

One movement, one word, out of line, and you'll be taken away and dealt with.

Do they have no knowledge of history, or understanding of how this plays out in totalitarian regimes around the world?

LassWiADelicateAir · 05/10/2018 23:16

From their Twitter feed

It was an absolute privilege to have our humble barge play host to@mdentonesq's puerile pearls of wisdom last night. Thank you to everyone who came along

To paraphrase Inigo Montoya I do not think puerile means what you think it means

AngryAttackKittens · 05/10/2018 23:16

"It's time you accept that, and if not we have a nice gulag waiting for you."

UpstartCrow · 05/10/2018 23:18

They do but they think its a good thing and that they are on the right side of the camp fence.
Whoops, Freudian slip. I meant to say History.

AngryAttackKittens · 05/10/2018 23:19

That use of "puerile" belongs here.

I have a friend who was smuggled out of Eritrea - her uncle paid the people smugglers to get my friend and her children out - and ended up in Scotland.

Her husband had been "disappeared" and she had been imprisoned for a time, and beaten there, for criticising the government. She said that she only spoke about these thing quietly, privately, with people she thought were friends, people she could trust.

She never found out who reported her to the Police for saying the wrong thing.

They are so irritating. As if they are the first people ever to think these things are bad.

userblablabla · 05/10/2018 23:24

I’m failing to see the issue? Scotland clamping down on hate crimes?

ChattyLion · 05/10/2018 23:26

Flowers for your friend disrespect. What a horrifying thing to go through.

FloralBunting · 05/10/2018 23:34

disrespect that's terrifying.

LassWiADelicateAir · 05/10/2018 23:35

The issue is the tone of it. I'm not a fan of describing things as "Orwellian" or "thought police" or "thought crime" as I think these terms get thrown out far too readily but in this instance I think they fit.

I could imagine these smug, humourless people denouncing me for example because I support those European countries who have banned full face coverings in public places.

And as another poster said- whose minds do they think are going to be changed by this?

FloralBunting · 05/10/2018 23:37

Separate post because I wanted to be flippant and chuckle about puerile pearls of wisdom. There are so many of them to go around.

IStandWithPosie · 05/10/2018 23:39

I’m failing to see the issue?

Well for starters, they haven’t included sexism or abuse of women, have they? It’s quite a big issue to completely ignore.

And secondly, it’s quite vague “if we see anything, we’ll report it” what the hell does that mean? Anything? We can all report anything, it doesn’t mean it’s a hate crime!

Knowmydisrespect · 05/10/2018 23:41

Thanks for the thoughtful comments about my friend from Eritrea. She is one of the most resilient and caring people I know. She and her children have been able to make a home here, and her daughter is training as a doctor. Her husband got out of prison, but his health is now so poor that he will never be able to get out of Eritrea. He was tortured in prison.

I'm just thankful that she is now in London, and won't see this horrible campaign.

Tweeted by an ad agency. A business whose raison d'etre is to communicate effectively. An ad agency which is receiving money from Scottish Government from my taxes and yet doesn't know what puerile means.

ArrivisteRevolt · 05/10/2018 23:42

It is a bit creepy, this campaign. It isn’t seeking equality, it is seeking to pick out people they don’t like.

But yeah, I saw a ‘dear transphobes’ notice in the Metro this morning. No one identifies themselves as a transphobe. Ridiculous.

MagicMix · 05/10/2018 23:46

As I understood it, for something to be a hate crime it has to be a crime first... right? And then it can be dealt with more harshly if it was found to be a crime motivated by hate of a person due to a protected characteristic (sadly not including women).

A hate crime isn't 'the crime of hating someone'. Seems they should make this clear because yeah that video has a sinister vibe.

LassWiADelicateAir · 05/10/2018 23:47

I said this on the other thread about this subject.

One of the "Dear Homophobes" posters has appeared near where I live. I find it insulting.

This is going to sound snobbish but given the demographic of where I live I think the chances of any one behaving in the manner referred to are slim to non- existent.

Knowmydisrespect · 05/10/2018 23:47

And who defines the "hate crimes"? Who decides what words and actions are acceptable and which are not?

We are currently living in a country where women who want to meet to talk about legislation which affects them are being prevented from doing so openly and are forced to meet and organise in secret. We are living in a country which deems the very definition of the word "woman" to be hate speech!

We look back at the Europe of the 1930s and say, "But how could that have happened? Why did they not speak out? Why did they not act?"

We're seeing why.

thatwouldbeanecumenicalmatter · 05/10/2018 23:48

Ok clicked on your link and went abit further and found this on the One Scotland website:

Have your say

October Spotlight – Women and Girls in Sport

Each month we’re putting the spotlight on a different gender equality issue. In October 2018, the topic is Women and Girls in Sport. We’d like to hear from individuals and communities in Scotland about their experiences and ideas around this topic.

onescotland.org/equality-themes/advisory-council-women-girls/have-your-say/

Apologies if this has already been posted but I went through it and the angle was as I suspected.

AngryAttackKittens · 05/10/2018 23:51

They've produced what looks like an ad for the new season of a series about a political dystopia, all glassy-eyed culty proclamations and promises to denounce fellow citizens and vaguely disconcerting backdrops. I wonder what happens when that ad agency attempts to persuade people to, say, buy biscuits.

BettyFloop · 05/10/2018 23:53

“if we see anything, we’ll report it” what the hell does that mean?

It means they're running scared Smile Wine

Spot on. That is exactly what it looks like.
