My friend just posted this on Facebook this morning. She isn't on MN so I have her permission to share. She would really like more people, especially people with ASD or who have children with ASD, to write to NAS thanking them for their willingness to listen and their agreement that Mermaids is not reputable.

This is really great news so please can we keep this bumped and shared. Thank you.

If posters on the SEN board would like to share that would also be great (if appropriate).

Dear XXXX ,

Thank you for your feedback regarding the Gender and autism page on our website.

I’m writing to let you know that I’ve raised your concerns regarding Mermaids UK, one of the organisations we link to on our Gender and autism page, with a number of teams within the National Autistic Society. In light of the concerns raised in your message, and of other feedback that we have received, we have decided to remove all links to Mermaids UK from our website, while we take the time to consult with relevant professionals and to reconsider which organisations we wish to place links to on our website.

As such, our Web Team are working to remove all links to Mermaids UK from our website as soon as possible. Please do be aware, however, that, as we are currently in the process of updating our website to reflect our new branding and organisational identity, it may take a few days for this to be actioned.

Thank you again for bringing this to our attention, and I hope that you are satisfied with the actions we are taking in light of the concerns that you have raised.

Kind regards,

National Autistic Society

I would like to hear of any groups or charities specifically for females with autism. I would happily donate or volunteer for something like that, that prioritised and protected autistic women and girls.

I agree fusillijelli

R0wantrees · 07/10/2018 19:45

So Aimee Challenor has quickly become spokesperson for LibDem LGBT+ which is pretty heavily weighted towards transwomen and gay men.
AImee Challenor is still under investigation by The Green Party.

I'm deeply distrustful of their use of what seems a complex tragedy in America.

Sad Angry

How can they be promoted and given such a prominant voice when their affiliation and loyalty to LibDems is barely a week old

Just SO what would happen with a woman

Trans really is a one way trip to the top isnt it

Charliethefeminist · 07/10/2018 21:07

The only way am coping with this madness is trying to crack on and focus on the minutiae of campaigning. Cannot bear to read that piece by AC. Disgusting.

I think the affiliation is to trans-rights. Aimee Challenor works closely with Sarah Brown and Zoe O'Connell in Stonewall's trans advisory group.

SunsetBeetch · 08/10/2018 00:04

Eh? Have NAS made a decision? I thought they had just put the link back up while they investigated.

Datun · 08/10/2018 08:50

How can anyone take them seriously when their (alleged) nappy fetish is plastered all over Twitter!!

CaptainKirkssparetupee · 08/10/2018 08:52

I think we may have found the nappy fetish troll who want the new world order where women are forced into nappies....

Charliethefeminist · 08/10/2018 09:08

I thought their application for membership was still pending

Charliethefeminist · 08/10/2018 09:32

Got the Green story wrong - orchiectomy was carried out in Thailand, one of the few places it was legal at such a young age. 16th birthday. Afterwards the Thai authorities changed the law. The hormones were secured in the US. Of course the hormones meant the child's penis was too small for 'normal' penile inversion, which Susie Green found awfully amusing and is on tape giggling about.

I'm horrified afresh by that kid's situation.

Two doctors giving conflicting advice. This scandalous declaration that they are surprised by the lack of material to work with. What the fuck are they expecting?

The fact that Jazz has never, and will never, orgasm. And then this fresh suggestion that they try and reverse what they have done as it's spoiling what they want to do next! Fucking reverse it!!!

Jazz could not have been more supported, yet the mother says depression is never far away.

There is no punishment severe enough for all these fucking people who are encouraging children down this path.

DayMay · 08/10/2018 10:01

The mum featuring in I am Jazz is in my opinion very emotionless from watching her on TV. Family provided therapy and letters to aid surgical and hormonal treatments.

The Dad is being lead by the mum and wasn't comfortable with the surgery which involved stretching the male genitalia prior to surgery.

TLC have sacked someone from the Duggar TLC show for expressing his distress at I am Jazz show content. The Duggar family member is mixing terms of gender and sex and is coming at it from an extreme Christianity though.

re the link to Aimee Challenor

I was diagnosed with autism at 4 years old. It’s a diagnosis that has been constantly rechecked throughout my life.

My son was put on an early intervention scheme at the age of two after seeing the doctor and a paediatrician. He received his diagnosis at 5 in order to get funding to attend school, either special or mainstream. He remained in mainstream.

His diagnosis has never been rechecked.

CaptainKirkssparetupee · 08/10/2018 10:12

Diagnosis aren't rechecked as autism doesn't just disappear.

At the time the Challoner scandal challenge broke, social service reports were published online that said the Challoner children went to the doctors something like a hundred times a year.

They indicated that the mother has Munchhausen's by proxy, or whatever it's called now.

Needmoresleep · 08/10/2018 10:21

It is not surprising that Mermaids is so important to the Transgender movement. But Mermaids is run by a mother with a single experience. And yes that mother may feel she did the right thing, but this does not translate either to:

  1. That this is the right treatment for all. In the past I have read stories of mother's who cured their children's autism by either extreme diets, or by intensive physical programmes involving teams of volunteers, but I am pretty sure that, perhaps without denying those individual experiences, the NAS does not advocate the same treatment for all autistic children. Plus indications are that there are a number of reasons why a child might feel they were "in the wrong body", possibly including having autistic traits, but rather than a watch and wait approach, Mermaids often advocate rushing into a one way hormonal/surgical approach.
  1. The Stonewall definition of Trans is: Trans people may describe themselves using one or more of a wide variety of terms, including (but not limited to) transgender, transsexual, gender-queer (GQ), gender-fluid, non-binary, gender-variant, crossdresser, genderless, agender, nongender, third gender, two-spirit, bi-gender, trans man, trans woman, trans masculine, trans feminine and neutrois.

Most people are sympathetic to the idea of gender dysmorphia, but this one (ex) child has become the poster girl, in a way that Ian Huntley or Jacinta White could not. But the policy changes advocated opens the door to single sex spaces, important to autistic women amongst others, for all.

DayMay · 08/10/2018 10:24

Munchhausen's by proxy, or whatever it's called now.

FII, fabricated induced illness.
