BBC responds to complaint about Woman's Hour

thatdamnwoman · 03/10/2018 11:46

I complained about the fact that Woman's Hour has failed to cover the trans issue and the consultation. This is what I've got back:

^This is an update to let you know that we had referred your complaint to the relevant people and regret that it may take a little longer before we can reply. Please do not contact us in the meantime.

Although we reply to most complaints within 2 weeks we cannot achieve this every time. It depends on what your complaint was about and how many others we are handling, or may sometimes be due to more practical issues. For example a production team may already be working on another programme or have gone on location.

Please don’t reply to this email because it’s sent from an account which can’t receive replies. If you do need to get in touch, please use our webform instead at www.bbc.co.uk/complaints, quoting your reference number.

For full details of our complaints process please visit: www.bbc.co.uk/complaints/handle-complaint/.

In the meantime thank you for contacting us - we appreciate your patience.^

So maybe sometime after the consultation deadline passes I'll get a response. I've gone from staunch BBC / TV licence supporter to someone who doesn't give a damn.

OP posts:
rightreckoner · 03/10/2018 11:56

Agree. I've was a staunch BBC supporter who thought that Jimmy Savile was a horrible accident - I thought the BBC had been complacent but not complicit.

Now I think their failures were born out of a huge arrogance and lack of care for the vulnerable. And they have clearly again allowed themselves to be overrun by a Men's Sexual Rights movement and, combined with their tendency to Orwellian newsspeak, they actually are complicit in this assault on women's rights.

GreenGloves · 03/10/2018 12:05

Yes I was another who defended it for years against mainly Tory attacks. Now to be honest I wouldn't mind if it went tomorrow. I'd miss Radio 4 though.

HamiltonCork · 03/10/2018 12:15

I've pretty much given up on the BBC. My kids are out of the CBeebies stage (they barely watch TV - big you tuber fans) and I mainly watch Netflix now.

BeUpStanding · 03/10/2018 12:16

I complained last week and got this reply:

We're planning a whole season to look at every aspect of the debate about sex and gender. I can certainly understand your question about the absence of this controversial issue from recent editions. On reflection, we felt it would be sensible to tackle all aspects of the debate in a focused and systematic manner.

So it sounds like they have no intention to even mention the topic while the consultation is open.

BernardBlacksWineIcelolly · 03/10/2018 12:22

yes, another who used to love the BBC, thought the licence fee was great value, always defended the organisation etc... and now barely interacts with the BBC at all

I feel so let down by them over this, it's totally changed the way I see them

I think LangCleg said they don't reflect left or right wing views, they reflect the prevailing view of the elite. I think in the past I've always been pretty in line with that view so not noticed the underlying bias, but boy am I noticing it now!

ChilliJamandAvocado · 03/10/2018 12:24

It's all feeling a lot deliberately "beware of the leopard" like. Hmm

“But the plans were on display…”
“On display? I eventually had to go down to the cellar to find them.”
“That’s the display department.”
“With a flashlight.”
“Ah, well, the lights had probably gone.”
“So had the stairs.”
“But look, you found the notice, didn’t you?”
“Yes,” said Arthur, “yes I did. It was on display in the bottom of a locked filing cabinet stuck in a disused lavatory with a sign on the door saying ‘Beware of the Leopard.”

(from HHGTTG)

HandsOffMyRights · 03/10/2018 12:27

So it sounds like they have no intention to even mention the topic while the consultation is open.

Well they'd better bloody roll their sleeves up, with just over 2 weeks left.

R0wantrees · 03/10/2018 12:45

So it sounds like they have no intention to even mention the topic while the consultation is open.

Is the same reason the NUS has remained silent about the investigation in Jess Bradley NUS Trans Officer?

Jess Bradley allegations regarding alleged flashing at work and in public places etc were first made July 29th 2018

WingsofXXSteel · 03/10/2018 13:13

Can we petition the government to extend the consultation for another 6 months?

LiverpoolReSisters · 03/10/2018 13:25

That's a fab idea.

HandsOffMyRights · 03/10/2018 13:30

It is a good idea. Ann Sinnot (think she's on MN now) has stated this too.

Angryresister · 03/10/2018 13:30

What a load of crap ....they have had zillion comments and emails about this. A deliberate delay on any response certainly.

happydappy2 · 03/10/2018 13:37

I’d hope it’s blatantly clear to government that the idea of self id is not going to work, there has to be checks & balances & a Drs diagnosis etc. Personally I’d like the consultation to end as planned so they can explain just how we move forward.

Though the fact we have men in women’s prisons doesn’t actually reassure me.

R0wantrees · 03/10/2018 13:41

Penny Mordant at Stonewall reception yesterday (Conservative LGBT+):

Stonewall twitter comment:
"Minister for Women & Equalities PennyMordaunt thanks stonewalluk & everyone in room for being steadfast in face of hate; says we stand by #trans people who have faced so much hatred in past year; need to make #GRA reform and more a reality #ComeOutForTransEquality"

LangCleg · 03/10/2018 14:01

I think LangCleg said they don't reflect left or right wing views, they reflect the prevailing view of the elite.

Yes. The BBC is the voice of the establishment. So if it is cheerleading for trans issues, you know it's an establishment project and the most oppressed narrative is utter bollocks.

Melamin · 03/10/2018 17:16

and the most oppressed narrative is utter bollocks

Never has such an oppressed minority group had so much unquestioning (and unquestionable) support from so many establishment institutions and so much government money.

Milander · 04/10/2018 19:13

I was inspired by you, here’s my next dayresponse

Thank you for getting in touch about Woman’s Hour and your comments about our coverage of the Gender Recognition Act.

We do have a big series planned which will look at the current issues around Sex and Gender. This will include a detailed look at the Gender Recognition Act as part of this. These issues are very important, multi-layered and hugely divide opinion. We want to look at the issues comprehensively, rather than dip our toes in the water in one or two short items.

We do understand your frustration but thank you for your patience. If you have any further thoughts on the content for this series, please do get on touch with the team via the Woman’s Hour website.

Kind regards

David Currie

Why the fuck would any news agency cheerfully inform their listeners that they will absolutely cover in depth this very important topic as soon as the government's deadline for having a say in it has been and gone?

Really really insulting!

Mrscaindingle · 04/10/2018 20:52

I emailed them as well and as yet have got no reply, I'm hoping they've had so many it's taking a while to respond.
Although that reply is pretty patronising, I used to listen to WH most nights in bed but haven't done so for weeks as most of the stuff on it seems insignificant in comparison to this. As a pp said it is making WH seem inconsequential now.

AbsintheFriends · 04/10/2018 21:25

most of the stuff on it seems insignificant in comparison to this

So much this ^^. I work from home and coffee and WH used to be a regular part of my day, but I rarely bother with it now. I caught the end of it this morning and snorted out loud to hear them giving instructions on how to fold a samosa ('Like this'... apparently. Fuck knows what 'this' was though, it being radio) - while women's rights are in the process of being rolled back a century.

Melamin · 04/10/2018 22:57

Ignoring the consultation makes it rather pointless.

LetticeFortescue · 04/10/2018 23:01

Would it be worth contacting Feedback?

newtlover · 04/10/2018 23:45

It does raise the question, though, of what we will all do once the deadline for the consultation is over?

WingsofXXSteel · 04/10/2018 23:56

We have 2 weeks til deadline, maybe we need to go old school and march, the public needs to pay attention double quick, can the media do it in that time?

I still think a petition to delay would be worth a shot. The Stonewall one has got attention.

SonicVersusGynaephobia · 05/10/2018 00:10

When the consultation is over, no matter what the result, I will continue to know, think, and say that trans women are male, and that homosexuality exists, and I will hold, and share that forever more.

Then I might start a campaign for a do-over of the Equality Act 2010. Since apparently our laws only have a 10 year shelf life so it's due a 2020 update.
