Said TRA tried to doxx Graham's wife after he retweeted about said TRA being a dodgy misogynist.

Thank you Graeme Star

boldlygoingsomewhere · 29/09/2018 08:34

Thank you, Graham and Lucy. It’s good that the actions of these people are being brought into the spotlight.

AngryAttackKittens · 29/09/2018 08:38

I'm pretty sure that going after the family members of people you disagree with is universally considered despicable even if you do identify as a lawyer.

Ambroise · 29/09/2018 08:43

Interesting (and completely unsurprising) that even though 'the lawyer' had a problem with Graham Linehan they decided to attack his wife. Misogyy wins the day no matter what. The TRA cannot avoid showing who they are with every action.

LassWiADelicateAir · 29/09/2018 08:47

Lawyer is someone who practices law - it can include academics

It really isn't. It's basically a meaningless layman's term. Academics teach or research law - they do not practice law unless they also happen to be a solicitor with a practicing certificate or a member of the Bar or the Faculty of Advocates. Parr time tutors are often practising solicitors, barristers or advocates- full time academic staff are unlikely to be practicing.

Am I right in thinking you can't call yourself a solicitor or barrister or doctor without the relevant qualifications? Interesting that lawyer isn't covered

A solicitor must have a practicing certificate from one of the Law Societies. An advocate (Scottish version of barrister) must be a member of the Faculty of Advocates and an English barrister a member of their equivalent. All of these people will have gone through a qualifying process and are regulated by their professional bodies, who in turn are regulated by statute.

"Lawyer" isn't covered because it's a meaningless term in a professional context.

LassWiADelicateAir · 29/09/2018 08:49

Should read ^practising certificate"

MrsBertBibby · 29/09/2018 08:56

Exactly so Lass. It is a criminal offence to call yourself a solicitor if you are not on the roll

AFAIK anyone can call themselves architect as well.

Glinner is very brave to stand up and be counted like this. He's lost huge numbers of followers because of it, the subject is so toxic, and the public have been so brainwashed into swallowing the 'why are people being so mean to these poor people who will kill themselves if anyone says they're men?^

I have absolutely no sympathy for someone who threatens suicide to get their own way, or force others to agree with them. It's emotional bullying. It's the stick that's used to beat anyone who tries to urge caution about feeding drugs to young teenagers.

MsBeaujangles · 29/09/2018 09:12

Tiger whilst 'therapist' and 'counsellor' aren't regulated terms 'psychologist' is. It's regulated by the HCPC.
I think the term 'lawyer' should be too. Just like sex and gender get used interchangeably in everyday use, so do lawyer and solicitor.

Procrastinator1 · 29/09/2018 09:15

The Times is the only newspaper that has consistently covered these issues using rational analysis. I don't like Rupert Murdoch, but I am grateful to Lucy Bannerman, Janice Turner and Andrew Gilligan for their articles and I have taken out a £1 for 3 months subscription which will probably turn into a full paying monthly one.

Thank you to Graham Linehan too and I am sorry his family have been brought into this.

AngryAttackKittens · 29/09/2018 09:18

I've allowed my initial 3 month subscription to turn into a permanent one because The Times has done such a great job covering this issue.

deepwatersolo · 29/09/2018 09:25

So I take it, even if lawyer is not a protected term, it is still legal to say Stephanie is not a professional lawyer, right?

DisrespectfulAdultFemale · 29/09/2018 09:34

Well done, Lucy and Graham. Glad to see that the comments were overwhelmingly in favour of common sense and reality.

UpstartCrow · 29/09/2018 09:37

deepwatersolo 'Professional' means that someone earns their main living from their profession, so I would assume its safe to say that Stephanie is not a professional lawyer.

BettyDuMonde · 29/09/2018 09:39

Crikey, I’ve been married three times and even I haven’t changed my name as often as Halliday/Hayden.

AngryAttackKittens · 29/09/2018 09:40

It's like playing an RPG in real life for some people. In all kinds of different senses.

LangCleg · 29/09/2018 09:45

All the LOLs (but not for Graham's wife, obviously).

The Times editors have given Lucy free rein, haven't they? And she's making the most of it. Good for Lucy!

This comment made me laugh out loud:

And what on earth is a Female Gender Recognition Certificate? I've never had any trouble recognising women.....

terryleather · 29/09/2018 09:46

On the GC board on Reddit they talk about LARPing - Live Action Roll Playing.
Very much sums up a large number of these AWAs...

DrinkFeckArseGirls · 29/09/2018 09:49

Stephanie also clearly identifies as a lawyer because in spite of claiming she’s one she’s not registered with any governing body. Deluded on all counts then.

LangCleg · 29/09/2018 09:51

Further to what Lass said, legal activities in England and Wales are categorised as reserved (most of it) and unreserved (the bits and bobs left). You don't have to be a solicitor or a barrister to do unreserved work. If you are only doing unreserved work, you could describe yourself as a "lawyer".

DrinkFeckArseGirls · 29/09/2018 09:55

Oops, Incan see it has been covered in greater depth! Grin

AsAProfessionalFekko · 29/09/2018 10:13

I wish the police would either piss or get off the pot. Why dont they seem to follow up malicious time wasters?

So it seems that in this case, the highly trustworthy person with lots of aliases (always a good sign of above board behaviour in my experience) is calling themselves a 'lawyer' in the way I could call myself a 'doctor' by virtue of the fact that I enjoy some Doctor Who cosplay occasionally.
