Manspreading Stunt

What is your opinion of this particular stunt.

www.lbc.co.uk/hot-topics/everyday-sexism/activists-bleach-mens-crotches-stop-manspreading/

Was this good or bad? And how do you think it effected the view of the feminist movement?

OP posts:
BettyDuMonde · 26/09/2018 20:09

A lone woman’s actions has zero effect on ‘the movement’.

(a woman using the term ‘gender’ is unlikely to be a rad fem, for the record)

Thingybob · 26/09/2018 20:41

It doesn't portray feminism in a good light and is just plain spiteful.

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 26/09/2018 20:46

It's wrong for many reasons.
Interesting that one of the Russian news outlets thinks this is faked.
I don't know any women who would do such a thing (and I know many, many feminist activists).

DereksSexyPyjamas · 26/09/2018 20:50

My opinion of it is that it’s fucking bullshit and never happened.

Badstyley · 26/09/2018 20:50

Bleach, I’m guessing that’s not very good for skin.
As for how did it affect views of the feminist movement, well I suspect it didn’t, unless people are already predisposed to misogyny. A black woman pushed in front of me at the bar in the theatre once. It hasn’t turned me into a rampant racist.

FermatsTheorem · 26/09/2018 20:55

What Derek said.

Let's see.

The article itself says that accusations have been made that this may have been faked.

This is supposed to have taken place in the country which imprisoned Pussy Riot for disrupting a church service.

In a country which has decriminalised domestic violence.

In a country whose own interior ministry estimates 14000 women a year are murdered in the course of domestic violence.
www.pri.org/stories/2017-03-10/least-12000-people-killed-domestic-violence-every-year-russias-not-even-sure

Do you honestly believe a woman could get away with throwing bleach on men's crotches on public transport without any sanctions whatsoever in a country like this?

Shame on the Metro for publishing what is obviously fake news (and given the way Trump has devalued that phrase, I do not use it lightly). This is clearly completely made up bullshit.

donquixotedelamancha · 26/09/2018 21:04

This solution is 30 times more concentrated than the mixture used by housewives when doing the laundry. It eats colours in the fabric in a matter of minutes

  1. Housewives? Do many feminists assume only women can do laundry?
  2. Strong bleach doesn't usually look like water, because it's usually in a cleaning solution.
  3. Household bleach will mark clothes. Strong bleach is nasty and will harm skin. If the above claims are true this is assault, probably ABH.

I call bullshit.

LassWiADelicateAir · 26/09/2018 21:08

The picture looks fake.

Interesting first and only post OP.

wonderingwhy123 · 26/09/2018 21:12

I thought so too. Looked fake - doing a bit of research and rumours suggest that she hired the men for this stunt. She could have done better and obviously just after attention.

OP posts:
DereksSexyPyjamas · 26/09/2018 21:13

Thanks Fermat. Grin

And as for the picture, it looks so fake that, playing devil’s advocate, I can only assume it was a re-enactment for the article. If it’s actually supposed to be the real thing then all I can say is lololololol nope. That’s about as realistic as the Cottingley Fairies, ffs.

happygolurkey · 26/09/2018 21:15

disgusting and dangerous. aside from that, i really don't understand the whole manspreading thing - was never even aware of it till recently and it became a 'feminist' thing to go on about. Had never noticed how men arrange their legs and cannot see how it affects me in the slightest. if anything, have started sitting a bit more open legged myself these days as have back problems and sitting like this (not wide open mind you! ha ha) is so much better for it than all twisted, with legs crossed etc. don't know why young feminists want to waste their time on this when there are so many more important things going on - but then am discovering lately that i am more of an 'old fart' type feminist (not sure which 'wave' that is).

happygolurkey · 26/09/2018 21:18

sorry, should have read further on - yes, agree - faked Blush

LassWiADelicateAir · 26/09/2018 21:22

Why did you post this ? Do you think anyone on here would approve of an act which causes damage to property and potential injuries to men?

FermatsTheorem · 26/09/2018 21:28

We all know why OP started the thread.

What I'm rather more interested in why the Metro published it. Were they trolling? Trying to stir up a fuss against "crazy man hating feminists"? I know the Metro is pretty low rent, but normally I don't think of it as being quite on the same level as, for example, the Sunday Sport which blatantly makes up stories. I thought they maybe did at least some rudimentary fact-checking (or indeed engaged their brains before embarking on the editorial process).

Mymycherrypie · 26/09/2018 21:32

i really don't understand the whole manspreading thing

Are you a regular tube user? It’s really very prevalent.

there is one man that consistently does it on my train who is very aggressive about it. He even sits in the middle of two seats. I asked him to move over on about 5 different occasions when I was pregnant and he shuffled a little, the last time I just said, look just move the fuck over. He did but elbowed me a few times quite sharply as if I was making him massively uncomfortable by just perching on the edge of my seat. Being hugely pregnant and very hot, I told him I’d punch him in the head if he didn’t stop. Strangely he was able to close his legs then.

He continues to do it (not to me since my outburst, proving that it’s some kind of powertripnfor him) and almost leers at people as if he wants to be challenged. I suppose he was expecting and quite enjoyed being asked to move over, but was not expecting me to challenge his further sharp elbows.

He is just one of hundreds.

Mymycherrypie · 26/09/2018 21:33

Anyway, yes, the actual stunt does look very dubious.

traceyracer · 26/09/2018 21:38

It's assault and I hope anyone caught doing so is charged with assault.

Not to mention it can cause nerve damage and blindness if any of it gets in the victim's eyes.

I cannot condone disgusting and abusive behaviour like this. It is not the way to solve anything.

LassWiADelicateAir · 26/09/2018 21:52

Are you a regular tube user? It’s really very prevalent

Yes. I really don't think it is a big deal.

This is LBC, not Metro?

FermatsTheorem · 26/09/2018 21:53

Ah, I read a Metro article about it (popped up on my phone's feed earlier... which is another issue - algorithms. The tyranny of the algorithm!)

Mymycherrypie · 26/09/2018 21:54

Because the tube has a larger number of travelers than the bus network in say, Wellingborough. So you will naturally encounter more travellers and thus more man spreaders.

LassWiADelicateAir · 26/09/2018 21:54

Tracey I doubt very much this actually happened. That picture is obviously staged.

Eagleitarian · 26/09/2018 22:00

I've never understood all the fuss about manspreading tbh, and as a man it affects me more due to being larger and thus requiring more space

It's defo annoying but much less so than chavs/kids who play music through their phone speakers or women who spritz themselves with perfume, covering you in the process.

However, 14,000 women killed a year by domestic violence! That's a truly scary number and shows us how much more fortunate UK women are.

happygolurkey · 26/09/2018 22:49

Are you a regular tube user? It’s really very prevalent.

No i don't, maybe that's what it is.
What a horrible experience for you Mymycherrypie. that guy sounds like a knob - good on you for standing up to himj

happygolurkey · 26/09/2018 22:50

I meant, no, i don't use tube

Barracker · 27/09/2018 00:03

Sad to say, if the stunt was real, she would have been physically very hurt by the time she's done this to a few men.
Happily, she isn't, and that's probably because the stunt is a big fat fake.
I can think of a few ideas why an inflammatory video attributed to 'feminism' might have popped out of Russia, and I bet there are more than a few schills busy 'liking' it 'in the name of feminism' too.

If it was real, I'd condemn it. I don't think it is real though.
