Does anyone know How many people are in WEP?
I'm just wondering what the power of my vote would be if I joined. Or if a few hundred feminists (re) joined.

Been thinking of joining. If we all did surely we could make a difference?
After all thats what the TRAs have done. Joined and changed policy.

Melamin · 14/09/2018 15:57

At least GC women would be less likely to be on the back foot now.

speakingwoman · 14/09/2018 15:59

Yes. exactly.

My thoughts too

speakingwoman · 14/09/2018 16:06

so four of us..... anyone else thinking the same way....

(I never thought I'd quote Hamilton but there's a line "tomorrow there'll be more of us").

I was thinking this over on the TUC thread! If people leave they can't affect policy. If we all join the WEP en masse maybe we can make a difference.

I joined the Lib Dems last year over Brexit, I guess I can switch each year to hopefully get a better deal - like on my car insurance...

RogerAllamsFangirl · 14/09/2018 16:51

I'm considering it.

It seems to be the way now with utilities etc. We need a USwitch for political parties.

Also, the WPUK tweets about finding out what unions voted, and who they consulted (not women Hmm) has inspired me.

Before this, I thought the whole idea of a Womens Equality party was a pile of pants and pointless - confirmed when the went the tra route. Now I see the point of one existing.

holidaylady · 14/09/2018 17:06

Me too

Prawnofthepatriarchy · 14/09/2018 17:09

I'd be prepared to sign up if others will too. I've left Labour and nowhere else appeals.

speakingwoman · 14/09/2018 17:14

Right, I've done it. The Women's Equality Party has one more GC member.

OP posts:
nopeni · 14/09/2018 17:14

They're fully self-ID aren't they? I'm sure they are.

But realistically there are 3 parties in the U.K. who will ever have power. Voting for others is pointless, but then so is voting for them really. Democracy is a bit of a joke when it's a rich elite group of mostly-men who rule everyone no matter what.

speakingwoman · 14/09/2018 17:15

They have just reopened the debate at their last conference.

OP posts:
NotAnotherFeckingMuftiDay · 14/09/2018 17:18

I would consider it if there are enough of us.

Acorninspring · 14/09/2018 17:21

Me too

grasspigeons · 14/09/2018 17:30

I don't know they talk a lot about gender equality rather than sex on their website

speakingwoman · 14/09/2018 17:33

now I'm a member I can write to them asking to change that I guess....

it worked for Momentum. They hung in there.....

OP posts:
Noqont · 14/09/2018 17:35

I will do it if enough GC females do too, so we can try and make a difference.

grasspigeons · 14/09/2018 17:39

I might email and say I want to join but it depends on their stance on gender v sex as the cause of the lack of equality

speakingwoman · 14/09/2018 17:44

grass - you need to look at the thread about their conference which covers this in detail but, essentially, they have removed the nodebate idea....

OP posts:
grasspigeons · 14/09/2018 17:59

Ok - Thank you, I will look in more detail when I've finished my caring responsibilities Grin

Manderleyagain · 14/09/2018 18:29

I was wondering the same (about joining). Presumably there will now be a consultation with members. Obvs they'll never be in government but from what I remember their plan was to influence other parties by pushing a particular agenda in the way ukip did on the eu. So by influencing their policy on this it would shift what is acceptable for political parties to say and consider. At least if everyone who left before 'no debate' was lifted rejoined the balance of membership would shift.

theOtherPamAyres · 14/09/2018 18:33

I'm in, and contacted my local branch to get involved.

JillyArmeeen · 14/09/2018 18:58

I was thinking the same thing.
If we join do we get a say on the self Id thing?
I had a quick look, fees are about £4a month and there is a group near to me.

speakingwoman · 14/09/2018 19:02

I think that's 14 of us thinking about it so far.

Some of you may feel that when there are 50 of us it's worth you joining, etc, etc. so perhaps worth saying if you're considering this.

fwiw, I'm looking forward to getting back to all the other stuff they talk about.
