Someone please tell me that this isn't true and is some kind of piss take. Or that there is more to the story or something.

The world really has gone mad.

Honestly couldn't make this up, could you?

"I have just been de-platformed by @Bristol_SU from a panel debate on ‘Free speech on campus’ organized by the University of Bristol Free Speech Society due to concerns that “my presence might spark protests which might lead to physical violence”. "

twitter.com/Sofocleous_A/status/1094631188789149696?s=19

“Our initial assessment of the speaker, made in consultation with the police, is that public disorder is highly likely”, @Bristol_SU says.

Nothing could provide a more ironic indication of the current status of social justice orthodoxy in academia than banning a speaker from an event titled ‘Free speech on campus’.

The question the panel would raise is “Is there a problem with free speech on campus?” @Bristol_SU has answered this question loud and clear, even before the event takes place, using tactics that have only been practiced by authoritarian and totalitarian regimes and institutions.

The tactics of @Bristol_SU are damaging academic discourse and are patronizing to the student community. Universities are no longer places where one can expose themselves to different points of view and challenge their worldview, but places enforcing liberal orthodoxy.

due to concerns that my presence might spark protests which might lead to physical violence

What utter bullshit that is.

He links to this document:

The SU's actions are unlawful:
An SU considers inviting a writer to debate gender equality. It has a policy of not inviting speakers who use what it calls ‘hate speech’. During planning, they find out that the writer has spoken on social media about their belief that women with a Gender Recognition Certificate are still men. The SU official organising the debate decides that the writer’s views amount to transphobic hate speech, and announces on Twitter that they have decided not to invite the writer. The writer complains that the SU’s decision to ‘no-platform’ them violates their right to freedom of expression.

The writer has not yet been invited to speak, and, as there is no legal duty on the SU to invite them, there is no infringement of the writer’s freedom of speech.

However, if an affiliated society or other students invited the same speaker to talk, the SU could not prevent them from doing so as the speaker’s views are lawful. This would engage the HEP’s s.43 duty to protect free speech, informed by the Article 10 rights of the students and speaker to give and receive ideas.

"Our initial assessment of the speaker, made in consultation with the police, is that public disorder is highly likely”, @Bristol**_SU says".

Erm, the speaker has never been violent before and has never been part of any violent disorder.

So how can Bristol Students Union and the police assess him and conclude that public disorder is highly likely?

Which police officers have made this assessment of Angelos?

Fortunately, Angelos is not a gentleman to let this go.

BettyDuMonde · 10/02/2019 18:05

The question the panel would raise is “Is there a problem with free speech on campus?”

Oh my god! Literally LOLed.

Popchyk · 10/02/2019 18:21

They should get a cardboard cut-out of Angelos and place it on a chair at the panel table for the duration of the event.

Have I Got News For You did similar when Roy Hattersley cancelled at the last minute. And replaced him with a tub of lard.

ErrolTheDragon · 10/02/2019 18:29

Erm, the speaker has never been violent before and has never been part of any violent disorder.

So how can Bristol Students Union and the police assess him and conclude that public disorder is highly likely?

One can only infer that the police think there is a high risk of public disorder arising from people who vehemently oppose freedom of speech, in particular on certain issuesHmm

WhatHaveYou · 10/02/2019 18:36

Bristol, is that where the Jam jar We need to talk event was featured on Ch4?

GCAcademic · 10/02/2019 18:47

So the Students’ Union has basically said that trans students are likely to be violent? Talk about an own goal!

DisrespectfulAdultFemale · 10/02/2019 19:38

Good lord. The irony.

Illyria47 · 10/02/2019 19:45

I have never known a generation so eager to be offended as this current crop of students both here and in the US. As has been noted on this post, students go to University to learn 'how to think, think critically, engage in debate, disagree with others on an intellectual, not emotional level. As for the idea that merely stating 'women do not have penises' is so horrifically trans-phobic the person saying this must be punished, well all I can say is to the person/s being offended, 'stop being so up yourselves and grow up'. I haven't read all of the Atlantic article but have been following other writers concerned at this coddling of students and the dangers it represents to both them and academia in particular. Suppression of free speech is one of the tools, in fact probably the first tool in creating a totalitarian society. The trans gender debate has brought this out into the sunlight. Robust, courteous debate is essential to a free society. I am pretty sure that if I wrote to our local paper on this issue stating my belief that trans women and men are still the biological sex they were born with and are therefore not the same as biological women and men I would be labelled transphobic. The fact that I would go on to say I would however treat trans women and men with courtesy, give them the pronouns they wish to be referred to would be lost in the general uproar. If one goes through life forever looking to be frightened of certain subjects or ideas one can never grow and develop. Meanwhile in the real world men, women and children are suffering because of the totalitarian societies they are living in.

littlbrowndog · 10/02/2019 20:17

The truth. Hard to face for some

Idiots all of them self righteous idiot# at that

Without a critical brain or thought between them

littlbrowndog · 10/02/2019 20:18

And very very privileged idiots at that

GCAcademic · 10/02/2019 20:41

We know that 90% of the public does not believe that women can have a penis. How does it get to the point that you cannot say, under threat of provoking violent protest (apparently), on a university campus, something that 90% of the public believe to be true?

Students Unions should not be allowed to operate on campus when they offer this kind of blatant threat to debate and academic freedom. If you threaten the operation of the institution, there should be sanctions.

ErrolTheDragon · 11/02/2019 01:32

We know that 90% of the public does not believe that women can have a penis.

I'm not convinced as many as 10% of the public - or students for that matter - really believe a woman can have a penis.

I thought that universities - working with the ECHR and the National SU had just come out with a pro-free speech, anti 'no-platforming' policy? Haven't this lot heard?

terfsandwich · 11/02/2019 05:43

So is this how they're trying to get around the no platforming ban? Claim they have the support of the police to maintain public safety!

I agree with earlier comment. It's laughably ironic that they are saying transgender rights activists are the ones posing a threat of violence!

WhatHaveYou · 11/02/2019 07:37

Yes they seem to be admitting the police require riot gear to hold TRAs back.

moimichme · 11/02/2019 07:49

At the institution where I work, the SU is constantly trying to frame feminists as being likely to start/cause violent protests. Not too sure how they could convince the police of that, though. Hmm

Bowlofbabelfish · 11/02/2019 08:31

Nine grand a year is a lot to pay for secure, soothing daycare for the easily offended.

Free speech on campus! No not you....

bluescreen · 11/02/2019 08:42

At the institution where I work, the SU is constantly trying to frame feminists as being likely to start/cause violent protests. Not too sure how they could convince the police of that, though.

If words can constitute 'literal violence' and a misgendering tweet requires the attendance of three police officers...

TowelNumber42 · 11/02/2019 08:49

It shocks me that the mainstream press isn't running this story.

There would be great headlines in this latest development.

Him being removed from a panel on free speech and why? Because police believe trans students would become dangerously violent if they hear someone saying that women don't have penises in a uni debate.

Does anyone have any journalist contacts?

IdaBWells · 11/02/2019 16:16

It's frightening that stating objective truth can get you beaten up.

Charley50 · 11/02/2019 17:57

The BBC have the story on the website. www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-bristol-47199156
Said that his tweets saying that women don't have penises led to a 'transphobic row.'

NeurotrashWarrior · 11/02/2019 18:34

He's one of the speakers at this event soon of anyone is interested in attending:
