"Proud of the FBU and PaulEmbery for ensuring that we did not vote to support the GRA Self ID resolution at the TUC today. The FBU cares and listens to its female members"

The hate speech leaflets referred to in that speech are the FairPlay for women leaflets.

Companion42 · 14/09/2018 12:12

I'm not a member of any union so is there any point in emailing/complaining about this issue? Would it just be ignored?

WarmWishes · 14/09/2018 12:34

The thing about those speeches is that if you were ill informed and also not capable of critical thinking or otherwise disinterested, then you would be easily persuaded. On the surface everything looks lovely and fine and emotionally they appear very persuasive.

I found the constant reference to non binary extremely troubling.

Did anyone catch on to what extra facilities are being suggested for transmen? I'm not sure what is being implied with that but assuming it is a push for private toilets/changing rooms, is it not a contradiction? Hasn't a transman magically self id'd out of oppression, so why would they need any extra facilities if transmen are men?

News

The Association of Educational Psychologists abstained.

Wow.

Considering it’s ed psychs who are tasked with diagnosing special educational needs, such as autistic spectrum disorder, that’s three really meaningful abstinations.

(Firefighters live communally while on shift, so of course understand that women need seperate changing and sleeping areas, and journalists are supposed to be upholders of truth)

Ereshkigal · 15/09/2018 12:09

I found the constant reference to non binary extremely troubling.

Me too. It didn't sound in the least sincere. It sounded like all those women these unions wheeled out on this issue were speaking from the same Stonewall script.

Ereshkigal · 15/09/2018 12:10

Agree those three unions abstaining was significant.

bd67th · 15/09/2018 22:12

My union, Unite, do not have women's officers. They have "equalities officers". I did not realise this and I am livid.

theOtherPamAyres · 15/09/2018 22:22

My union, Unite, do not have women's officers

That reminds me of the Green Party. We used to produce a Manifesto for Women for General elections. Suddenly, it said: Manifesto for Gender Equality .

bd67th · 15/09/2018 22:35

Unite wrote this fabulous guide to women's health and safety at work (pdf), based on our sexed differences. If TWAW, those sexed differences aren't a "woman" thing any more and the guide becomes invalid.

It may be worthwhile to put forward some questions for the NEU General Secretary.

Zeugma · 15/09/2018 23:26

I suppose in the current climate of fear I should be grateful that my union actually had the guts to abstain (NUJ).

silentcrow · 15/09/2018 23:36

Four up already - top work.

Few more up now. Suspect they'll be ignored in favour of easy wins on funding and workload, but we'll see. I've had more contact with the union this week than in the previous 15 years put together.

12:34 onwards discussion of the vote. I thought KC sounded quite conflicted.

SpannerInTheWorks · 16/09/2018 17:35

Head is now tentatively above the parapet - I've emailed Unison. It looks like they are being guided by the advice in this briefing pack . Apparently there has "been an unfortunate suggestion of a conflict between trans equality rights and women’s equality rights." But you will be glad to hear that "Concerns that have been raised are based on misunderstandings about what reform would mean". Phew.

Latinista · 16/09/2018 17:43

I’m a member of Unison too, Spanner. Is there similar guidance for male and trans members to be allies of women, I wonder.

PlonitbatPlonit · 16/09/2018 17:43

Ambroise I think that answer will infuriate the trans lobby. He points directly to the conflict of rights.

Ambroise · 16/09/2018 17:50

Yes, I thought he was clearly pained by it and saw a conflict. Interesting to see the reply we get to our emails. I will share. Word on Twitter is that there is sympathy for our view in the upper echelons of the Union. Didn't stop one woman trying to make out that sexual violence isn't prevalent in schools.

qumquat · 16/09/2018 17:57

Yes I’ve also been told that Kevin Courtney and Mary Boustedwould be receptive to my views (just need to finish all my yr11 marking for tomorrow so I can get on to writing the letter) Good in one way but scarier still that despite this they voted for it.

NotMeOhNo · 16/09/2018 22:31

Give me One genuine working class grass roots unionist who supports self-id. I bet there isn't one in the whole country.

TimeForDebate · 17/09/2018 00:22

Manipulated by Stonewall's creepy brainwashing mantra?

"After some very moving contributions, TUC unanimously supports gender self-declaration"
TimeForDebate · 17/09/2018 00:23

I have sent a detailed email to my union asking why they supported it and why there was no consultation.

Pywife2 · 17/09/2018 20:53

Had a phone call from my union today, I suspect they were trying to sell me something. Told the caller that I'm resigning from the union (Unite) because of the TUC vote etc. Caller clearly had no idea what I was talking about and sort of said 'Oh dear' then finished the call ASAP. Never did find out why they rang.

I need to put it in writing, the people who call from the Union or the Labour Party have no understanding of politics, they could even be outsourced.
