Attack on Fair Play for Women in the Indie

Prawnofthepatriarchy · 10/09/2018 21:55

I'm non-binary and I was approached by an anti-trans campaigner on the street. This is what I learnt.

There are too many highlights (sarcasm) to mention. Lies too. The comment section is a bit of a treasure trove too.

The Independent was the only national not to apologize for wrongly claiming last November that FPFW lied about the number of transwomen in prison for sex offences.

Any chance the Independent is trying for another bite at the cherry? Surely not.

OP posts:
BabySharkDoododoo · 10/09/2018 23:26

Also like the emphasis on the FPFW study being made up (despite it being confirmed my MOJ then factchecked by BBC also) and the razor blade thing rearing its head. Its just a load of nonsense, like usual.

But yes, they see the value of a trans only space. Yet think women (misgendered women at that) are horrendous and evil bigots for wanting female only space.

And to top it all off, the 'self ID won't change female spaces' and Travis Alabanza mentioned too.

Delicious.

R0wantrees · 10/09/2018 23:26

But this night we spoke for a good few minutes. I mentioned to her that, in my role as a journalist, I had personally called the Ministry for Justice about FPFW’s trans prisoner study, and they had said there was no evidence to back it whatsoever. This was whilst working with the amazing non-binary activist Owl Fisher on a piece they wrote disproving the study – the woman hadn’t heard of Owl, and she hadn’t read Owl’s piece.

Hmm there's some interesting comments by Andrew Gilligan about Owl's article. Also an IPSO ruling to consider.

stealthsquirrelnutkin · 10/09/2018 23:37

The comments are heartening. Seems like the general public is no longer allowing misinformation to pass unchallenged.

GulagMilkMonitor · 10/09/2018 23:39

I see they persist in 'midgendering' women, even after women (especially GC feminists) have said repeatedly that they are not 'cis'. Is this not literal violence right there?

Indeed, this is literal violence.
I do not identify with any form of gender and yet I am a woman. LITERAL VIOLENCE!

Stickerladiesoftheworldunite · 10/09/2018 23:39

I don't buy it (the yarn and the paper).

The Secret Diary of Adrian Hyberbole aged 13 and 3/4....

"A chance encounter across town, a lone leafleter, a neuroscientist. A non binary journalist in persecution.

"Literal violence attacks from every corner. The fear of not being addressed by the correct pronoun consumes my every waking moment. Why oh why is the GRA taking so long? Why are a teeny weeny group of selfish women stopping me from getting on with my life?"

The drama! I'm sure the fictional campaigner went back and ordered one of Owl's books online (Owl's tiresome book promotion even spills into this article) while pondering their own existence.

Somebody's telling porkies. This is just a layer cake of fabrication.

What does irk me is that women aren't given this platform to discuss our concerbs. This 'journalist' was given a platform because they say they are 'non binary'

If they care so much for sacred spaces they should campaign for their own, go out leafleting and stop making everything about "me."

Stickerladiesoftheworldunite · 10/09/2018 23:43

If my 12 year old boy whined on like the narrator in The Inde, he'd be told to come off Fortnite and go to bed as he was over tired.

'Yas Necati is an apprentice at The Independent and the London Evening Standard'.
There is a pattern within Nacati's articles and its a shame that their editors/supervisors/mentors are apparently encouraging this:

cf Necati's article attacking Lucy Massoud and Man Friday March 2018:
www.independent.co.uk/voices/lucy-masoud-fbu-lgbt-trans-london-fire-brigade-union-today-transphobic-a8267096.html

(Nacati hangs this story on a deliberately edited and then misquoted extract from the Today program. Emily Brothers introduced herself as 'a woman with trans experience', Lucy Massood said she doesn't know what that means. We listened to the radio that morning and had the same puzzled reaction to Brothers' description)

Articles attacking Transgender Trend:

www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/home-news/transphobic-booklet-school-campaign-crowdfunder-reinstated-fundraising-transgender-trend-gendered-a8389346.html

Article attacking the women who protested 'Get the L Out' at Pride London, Critical Sisters, Mayday4Women, Object and the Lesbian Rights Alliance,Fair Play for Women, Transgender Trend, A Women’s Place, Man Friday, ReSisters, Transgender Trend:

iamawoman · 11/09/2018 08:02

'Science says trans people are real' that's all we need to know really.

ShrodingersSturdyPyjamas · 11/09/2018 08:09

So a man smoking pot in a female toilet, was observed by another man in a female toilet, who then went on to bump straight into a women [how could he tell?] who then also decided to tell him all about the GRA just like that?

Wow. All in one trip out?

Wanderabout · 11/09/2018 08:11

Thanks for those links Rowan.

There's a bit on what this journalist has written on muckrack.

Apparently they think teenage girls should be given vibrators and is surprised this is controversial.

Fairplay for Women attacked by TELI (Trans Equality Legal Initiative)
"The Trans Equality Legal Initiative has been founded by a coalition of lawyers and activists, all with a strong background in human rights in the LGBT sphere.

Our structure values the importance of partnership working between both Trans and Cisgender professionals and the need to ensure our work is led by the voices of Trans and Non-Binary people. Each of our areas of focus are Co-Convened by one Trans Place and one Open Place Convener."
www.teli.org.uk/our-team/

TELI Twitter comments:
"We wonder how qualified extremist anti trans activist group "fair play for women" is to comment on prison processes & the law other than their personal prejudice against trans people. We're sad to see @VictoriaLIVE host them as experts without adequate rebuttal #VictoriaLive"

"It's as if they lituraly wanted to incite fear on this topic instead of asking actual experts to discuss aka representatives from prison system ourselves at TELI Press for Change and the organisation Women In Prisons. Not rocket science to research those groups as experts."

If that's an example of TELI "lituracy", I'm glad they're not representing me.

R0wantrees · 11/09/2018 08:24

TELI have had a great deal of influence... despite their spelling!

R0wantrees · 11/09/2018 09:49

Interesting after the TELI comment about Victoria Derbyshire that BBC Breakfast today featured Stephen Whittle (founder of Press for Change) discussing self-id GRA.

*I don't believe for a moment even Dawn Butler would say anything so trite as 'it's ok for other people to have their equal rights and their human rights'."

I don't think Butler is a deep thinker, to be fair:

8/9/2018 Dawn Butler (Shadow Minister for Women and Equalities) & TELI:

twitter.com/UKTELI/status/1038468818492895232

cf the many issues affecting women raised at WEP conference that weekend and the breaking news that the perpetrator of attacks on 4 vulnerable female prisoners had a long violent offending history against women and children. Did Dawn Butler comment?

May 2018 Dawn Butlers speech in House of Commons during special session on homophobia, transphobia, biphobia she referred to a social platform that was calling for 'new section 28'

Important to note that she didn't name it, but a false allegation was originally made against Mumsnet by a MN intern (re data breach) and has also been repeated by a number of prominant TRAs, including those with political influence.

hackmum yes, sadly you are right, Dawn Butler probably would say something so trite.

TELI on Fairplay for Women (Manchester)

Attack on Fair Play for Women in the Indie
BarbieBrightSide · 11/09/2018 11:18

This stood out for me:

But what does talking to each other actually look like? When trans people have our own spaces, curated and controlled by us, we can feel safe and comfortable, we can talk openly about things that we often wouldn’t be able to, like trans sex, we can let loose and smile and feel supported, and we can also discuss the most difficult parts of existing with people who get it and will show us nothing but kindness

So if trans people feel safe and supported in their own spaces, why on earth are they campaigning so hard to get into women's spaces, where they DON'T feel welcomed? Surely the most sensible and productive solution would be to campaign for a third space for those members of the population who are transgender?

(BTW I have lost hours reading threads on this board and I do realize that this is not actually what is wanted by the most aggressive of the campaigners)

Stickerladiesoftheworldunite · 11/09/2018 11:22

This is what The Independent had to say about the article mentionef upthread (Get the L out at Pride) when I complained about misgendering the women as 'cis women'

'we do not consider "cisgender" to be derogatory, but rather simply a description of people who identify with the sex they were assigned at birth.'

There were numerous emails and the editor in question seemed to enjoy using cis in their replies.

Datun · 11/09/2018 11:23

That article is deceitful. From start to finish.

It's all childish, illogical nonsense, but claiming the MoJ denied FPFW's claims in a phone call? When they did the opposite.

I hope FPFW sue. But also the MoJ could take issue as well.

I believe that news editor, Elizabeth Cobbe, previously worked at the PCC. When I said I'd be taking my complaint to the IPSO she took great pleasure in saying that the Independent is self regulating!

R0wantrees · 11/09/2018 11:39

Datun I'm fairly confident that similar observations of this journalist's work were made of their previous pieces.

The Indipendent 'Voices' or 'Opinion' pieces have featured many prominant TRAs as well as heavily biased and factually 'lacking' comments.

Hmm

there are though still standards set by the NUJ:
(extract)
"A journalist:

At all times upholds and defends the principle of media freedom, the right of freedom of expression and the right of the public to be informed.

Strives to ensure that information disseminated is honestly conveyed, accurate and fair.

Does her/his utmost to correct harmful inaccuracies.

Differentiates between fact and opinion."
