And this may be the first time where I've heard this particular issue dealt face-on, on R4. Well done Dr. Nicola Williams (Fair Play for Women) for telling it like it is.

Will be around 20 mins into the programme.

Thanks for sharing

I don't want "non violent" trans prisoners in the female estate, either.

BoreOfWhabylon · 07/09/2018 17:40

Nic was great and for once they didn't have a trans spokesperson to DARVO.

ShackUp · 07/09/2018 17:40

Dr Williams was excellent. A law correspondent was also on to outline the MoJ's legal position, and stated that 60 of the 125 transgender prisoners currently 'on roll' were sex offenders.

Procrastinator1 · 07/09/2018 17:43

Dr Williams did very well. BBC commentator gave the reason for the change in prison procedure in 2016 as the suicide of 4 trans women in the male estate. Not sure if just being in the male estate was the cause of the suicides. No other cases mentioned, I think.
Does this mark a change in the BBC about how trans issues are reported?

arranfan · 07/09/2018 17:48

A law correspondent was also on to outline the MoJ's legal position, and stated that 60 of the 125 transgender prisoners currently 'on roll' were sex offenders.

And yet, look at how BBC's Reality Check attempted to undermine FPFW for stating that a high percentage of transgender prisoners 'on roll' are sex offenders.

birdsdestiny · 07/09/2018 17:51

She was very good. I was very encpuraged by the whole piece. The 60 out of 125, made me stop what I was doing, I won't be the only one.

ErrolTheDragon · 07/09/2018 17:51

I wonder if they asked anyone? I can't see anyone wanting to try to defend this particular piece of indefensibility.

Well, the (female) presenter actually stated that the offender still had a penis.

Descent · 07/09/2018 17:57

The tide is really turning. It doesn't just feel like wishful thinking any more.

ErrolTheDragon · 07/09/2018 18:01

Shameful that - as many predicted - it takes abuse of vulnerable women to get women's concerns heard.

MsBeee · 07/09/2018 18:08

Bump

placemats · 07/09/2018 18:12

Dr Nicola Williams delivered an elegant and persuasive argument.

I can't really remember what the other person had to say as I was so persuaded.

So happy this had airtime.

birdsdestiny · 07/09/2018 18:23

Yes lots of discussion of actual penis. You know in that genital obsessed way that us women do.

placemats · 07/09/2018 18:33

I know us women are so obsessed with our genitals we cannot even come up with a name to call them. Foof, fanny, fanjo, but no one seems to want to correlate with penis as in vagina or vulva or clitoris (clitoris is always shortened to clit).

Gosh, I'm obsessed.

TerfedOff · 07/09/2018 18:42

Trying to get it to load but not working for me. Anyone else or just me?

Yes... and iirc they ask (optionally) for your gender.

TerfedOff · 07/09/2018 19:01

Thank you. Sorted. Yes very good. Very clear.

heresyandwitchcraft · 07/09/2018 19:43

Yes! Dr Nic!!!! Star

HermioneWeasley · 07/09/2018 19:46

Dr Nic is a shero! 💐💐💐

newtlover · 07/09/2018 19:50

it was very good, and especially the statistic that half of all TG prisoners are sex offenders

Pywife2 · 07/09/2018 20:06

I was really encouraged by this piece, and by the fact they had the excellent Dr Nic on, and tried to 'balance' her with a representative from the Home Office, rather than a random transwoman. Quite right (if you must do 'balance' instead of journalism).

Sad that this is still such a taboo subject that nobody from the prison service would come on the programme. Frankly, their apology makes me sick to my stomach and I hope the women concerned sue them, and use the money to rebuild their lives.

Has anyone read James Kirkup's piece in The Spectator? It's a masterpiece of barely suppressed anger. He refers to the rapist by name throughout, and points out how ridiculous it is for journalists to refer to a woman's penis. I don't know how to link it here, but maybe someone else does?

Halfeatentoast · 07/09/2018 20:09

I ❤ Dr Nic.
