And this may be the first time where I've heard this particular issue dealt face-on, on R4. Well done Dr. Nicola Williams (Fair Play for Women) for telling it like it is.

It was a fab piece and r ally wnjoy d listing to it. Full of facts and common sense.

60 our of 125 was really shocking to me.

Nightowlagain · 08/09/2018 05:12

I was also pleased to hear this, she was great. All the main points delivered really well, and the presenter was spelling out the facts too, it’s a positive step I think.

Does anyone have a working link to the James kirkup article please? I’ve been to the page and it says it’s an online exclusive so I can’t see it.

Prawnofthepatriarchy · 08/09/2018 06:28

I loved the way the interviewer read the anodyne statement that ended the piece, that the "safety of all prisoners must be an. Absolute. Priority."

She sounded as unimpressed as I was.

James Kirkup article is on a couple of other threads eg this one www.mumsnet.com/Talk/womens_rights/3358557-James-Kirkup-Why-was-a-transgender-rapist-put-in-a-women-s-prison

Strange wording in the BBC intro: “Karen White was a convicted paedophile born Steven Wood”. Surely IS a convicted paedophile? Words matter. You don’t get to expunge your entire previous identity when you decide to take on a new, female one.

Wanderabout · 08/09/2018 08:41

I think the 'was' refers to the fact KW was already convicted of that offence at the time of the decision to put White in a female prison. Dry

The tide is really turning. It doesn't just feel like wishful thinking any more

Completely agree.

MipMipMip · 08/09/2018 09:06

It was excellent. Who was the fact man? He didn't seem overly impressed by the situation either.

2rebecca · 08/09/2018 19:40

I was really impressed when I heard this on the way home yesterday. It's the first fair unbiased piece I've heard on trans issues by the BBC.
I would have given a different answer to Nic on the "who should be in women's prisons" question She said just said those born female. I'd say people without penises and anyone born female who wants to be in a women's prison, but understand why she said just those born female and its up to the prison authorities to have a transgender wing in the male prison to cope with the increase in trans women in the prison population.

Lovelytreeoutsidemywindow · 08/09/2018 20:03

I wonder if the change in editorial guidelines over climate change - link below - which says ' if the science proves it we should report it' - is also filtering through to the BBC's approach to reporting the trans debate?

:) very good!

Italiangreyhound · 09/09/2018 00:42

How on earth did this happen? A male rapist in a women's prison.
