So happy this is out there now in brighton particularly as I was told by my infant school child that he learnt at school that boys can also be girls

Well, and the non-TRA crowd will probably have ACTUALLY READ THE ARTICLE FIRST. So they can make up their own mind.

Charliethefeminist · 02/09/2018 11:40

They thought they had the Argus in the bag five years ago. Must be pretty cross right now.

Ereshkigal · 02/09/2018 12:46

Very interesting, Charlie.

May 2018 Guardian article discusses both school toolkits,

'Schools pulled into row over helping transgender children
As more teens come out as trans, experts clash over how schools should help'
(extract)
Profound disagreement has arisen about what schools should do. Should they, in the words of a widely used toolkit from the Allsorts Youth Project in Brighton, “make visible and celebrate trans people”? Or take the “watchful waiting” approach advocated by the Transgender Trend pack, which warns schools to be “aware of the risk of ‘social contagion’ from celebrity trans internet vloggers who glamorise medical transition”?

Stephanie Davies-Arai, a parenting adviser, launched the Transgender Trend resource pack in February half-term, thinking it would barely get noticed. Instead, she says: “It just blew up”. The LGBT lobby group Stonewall accused Transgender Trend, the organisation Davies-Arai set up two-and-a-half years ago, of spreading “damaging myths, panic and confusion”, and advised local authorities not to use the pack. On Twitter, people piled in, with one describing the pack (which had been checked by lawyers) as a “modern edition of Mein Kampf”. (continues)

Look who's stirring up the twittersphere about this.

Honestly, if someone told me that a guide, that was relevant to me, contained hate, I'd go straight to it. The sensationalist aspect alone would tempt me to check it out.

They keep doing Stephanie's work for her.

Charliethefeminist · 02/09/2018 13:51

How did this get to be a monet maker for all sorts? It should be a money maker for TT.

R0wantrees · 02/09/2018 13:54

Stephanie Davies-Arai, founder of Transgendertrend discusses the school toolkit and wider issues:

Speech at recent, 'Let A Woman Speak' Plymouth:

12thGuelph · 03/09/2018 06:59

I'm probably going to regret this, but does it bother you if Saxby is Davies-Arai's sister and doesn't mention it here?

Starkstaring · 03/09/2018 07:03

I hope that the Brighton Argus is a reflection of what might be happening more widely. Schools and local authorities get their Allsorts training and go full on Trans-affirmative. Sounds good and supportive to start with, then parents start to think - hang on a minute, what is going on here? Local paper has some common sense and publishes article which reflects real life, way ahead of policy wonks who can't see the wood for the trees.

Starkstaring · 03/09/2018 07:13

12th if they are sisters then that should have been stated.

12thGuelph · 03/09/2018 07:26

I also suspect very strongly that the "case studies" in the schools pack are not authentic.

AndYetItMoves · 03/09/2018 07:40

What makes you think that, 12th? Why start rumours of duplicity like that without something to back you up?

IHateHouseworkWithAPassion · 03/09/2018 09:00

I also suspect very strongly that the "case studies" in the schools pack are not authentic

That is hilarious. Nice try

IHateHouseworkWithAPassion · 03/09/2018 09:07

Saxby is a brilliant feminist writer. The fact that she is related to the founder of Transgender Trend is irrelevant to me. She has written an excellent defence in the Argus of a previous article they ran

www.theargus.co.uk/news/16416750.petition-to-ban-anti-trans-material-from-schools-gains-support/

The fact that the paper has allowed both sides of the argument is amazing, whosoever wrote it. People should be allowed to defend themselves when untruths are written about them or their work.

R0wantrees · 03/09/2018 10:38

Starkstaring
Are you proposing a full background disclosure for all those who comment with regards gender self-id?

Are you proposing that all anonymised case studies of children / young people used in education/ social care policy documents etc the sources should made open to public scrutiny?

Starkstaring · 03/09/2018 10:43

Not at all. There is no problem them being related. It's just that there may be some people who, if they find out at a later date that they are, may use that to undermine the credibility of the article, that's all.

R0wantrees · 03/09/2018 11:33

Perhaps more likely?
'There may be some people who will use anything to undermine the credibility of the article'

Two brilliant sisters speaking the truth. Enjoy, 12th. You might learn something.

carceralfeminist · 03/09/2018 11:48

LOL! As if trans activists don't form their own clique and back each other up in the media constantly.
By that logic Fox and Owl (in a relationship with each other) should never be allowed to comment on the same things..............

nauticant · 03/09/2018 12:11

I also suspect very strongly that the "case studies" in the schools pack are not authentic.

The sneakiness of this stands out. No evidence, just a little lie dropped into discussion in the hope it spreads.

speakingwoman · 03/09/2018 12:12

The 2013 account of meeting the Argus makes me nostalgic. The tone was so much gentler then... also more genuine.

What happened?

Tanith · 03/09/2018 14:41

“does it bother you if Saxby is Davies-Arai's sister and doesn't mention it here?”

Not half as much as Aimee Challenor denying knowledge about her father’s pending court case...

AngryAttackKittens · 03/09/2018 14:43

Can it still be called sneaky if everyone reading it immediately rolls their eyes and thinks "load of old cobblers"?

12thGuelph · 03/09/2018 18:13

Saxby is a brilliant feminist writer. The fact that she is related to the founder of Transgender Trend is irrelevant to me.

It's irrelevant until she fails to disclose it. Isn't it basic journalistic ethics?
