25 new statues to women to include one to a transwoman, submitted by a transwoman.

Maybe one for AIBU threads but I fear that many women will just think I'm being mean in thinking that it's an outrage that one of the 25 statues to women that are to be erected by English Heritage is of a transgender woman. Currently under 3% of 925 statues are of woman. Was it really too much to ask that all 25 of these new ones were actually for actual woman. Strewth.

Pfft Bespin.
I see your Lynn Conway, and raise you a Grace Hopper, Hedy Lamarr, Ada Lovelace, the many women of Bletchley Park, and that is just tech.

Of course, women throughout history invented a lot of things (many of their ideas/breakthroughs stolen by men).

No problem Doyenne - I keep thinking that everything is a wind up and then it bloody isn't. But a permanent sticker campaign would be fun.

**So a transwoman has been picked because the transwoman is supporting trans people. So what’s that got to do with actual women?
**

Well some trans people are women, whichever way you look at it, so I would accept that she has helped women (even if it's for them to transition to being male).

I can't get worked up about it - she seems to have been living as a woman for decades so that's good enough for me. I don't know her position on TR activism but judging her on that is a separate issue to whether she's "woman enough" to be included in the category.

I don't think this thread is showing us in a good light.

FermatsTheorem · 30/08/2018 23:31

It is worth reading Lynn Conway's wikipedia entry. Although Lyn undoubtedly struggled terribly against a system that genuinely was prejudiced (losing a job at IBM over transitioning, for instance, which should not happen to anyone), and did some fascinating work, the paragraph on Lynn's interactions with Bailey (author of "The Man who would be Queen") and Alice Dreger is very enlightening. Also the throwaway comment about Lynn taking part in the first all-trans performance of the vagina monologues Confused Hmm.

But agree - statues of Hopper, Lamarr, the Bletchley women, Lovelace first please.

Iamagreyhoundhearmeroar · 30/08/2018 23:33

There was a trans performance of the Vagina Monologues?? Sweet Jesus...

DixieFlatline · 30/08/2018 23:34

By definition, no male is 'woman enough' to be included in the category 'woman'.

FermatsTheorem · 30/08/2018 23:37

It's Caitlyn Jenner winning "woman of the year" all over again. And Labour's all women shortlists.

Women notice systematic sexism in the lack of statues to women who have achieved some incredible things.

Women set about redressing this balance.

But magically, some of these precious spaces to celebrate women's achievements get taken by... biologically male individuals.

PositivelyPERF · 30/08/2018 23:44

but judging her on that is a separate issue to whether she's "woman enough" to be included in the category.

Not a woman.

seafret · 30/08/2018 23:52

I didn't even know this was hapening. How many opinons have they got? Seems as thought they must have sought out certain opinions or been targetted by particular groups otherwise I cannot believe that a transwoman was a natural and favourite choice for most women over actual women.

Oh funnily enough, the some of nomination/workshop locations were in Cambridge, Manchester, London, Brighton. Nothing anywhere near me. and the furthest (and only) south or west was Taunton.

DuckingGoodPJs · 30/08/2018 23:52

Thanks for the Invisible Women list Fermats
I will try to make time to consider the list and vote. Some damned fine women on there (and not 'stunning and braveâ„¢')!

Oldstyle · 30/08/2018 23:59

I checked her twitter account Yetanother to see where she stood on the current 'debate'. She retweets Mermaids and Gendered Intelligence posts and supports the censoring of the ROGD research by the Brown's University researcher. Haven't looked any further so I might be wrong but it doesn't suggest a commitment to improving women's lives.

Well funded aggressive lobbying, the usual.

Stickerladiesoftheworldunite · 31/08/2018 10:40

Once again, a trans advocate manipulating information/lists with no consultation for their own agenda.

deydododatdodontdeydo · 31/08/2018 10:57

Currently under 3% of 925 statues are of woman.

In the link posted it says 157 of 925, which is around 17%.
Oh, I see, they discounted non-royal and non-mythical women.
Did you discount non-royal and non-mythical men? They don't mention % at all, so I assume OP has worked this out?
I think accurate figures are important.

SonicVersusGynaephobia · 31/08/2018 11:08

How did they determine whether the other 24 statues identified as women or not?

Oldstyle · 31/08/2018 11:54

I took the info direct dey and haven't done my own calculations. Accuracy is important of course but I reckon the principle stands: women are significantly under-represented, non-royal/non-mythological women are very significantly under-represented and this campaign was specifically intended to address that issue.

OP posts:
deydododatdodontdeydo · 31/08/2018 12:09

I do agree the principle stands, but if we get our figures wrong someone will call us out on it. Rightly in my opinion, I'm a stickler for getting things tight.
I imagine if they discounted non-royal men that would remove a lot.

Racecardriver · 31/08/2018 12:13

I wouldn't have thought to erect a statue of any of those women who I have never heard of to be honest. I also didn't spots the transwoman in the list when I skim read.

Treasure114 · 31/08/2018 15:15

Wow, some truly amazing women on this list Halo

misscockerspaniel · 31/08/2018 15:57

I think accurate figures are important

I think accurate facts are important. Biological facts like it is impossible for someone born male to become female. Fact.

To quote Elvis Presley: Truth is like the sun. You can shut it out for a time, but it ain't goin' away.
