I am so happy to read that! He has actually listened to women and thought seriously about it. That is such a coherent and honest piece. Brilliant stuff, thank you for posting. Fab.

scepticalwoman · 16/08/2018 09:37

Excellent article and clearly calling out Stonewall's unethical position.
I also liked this:

the parameters of what counts as transphobia are drawn too widely
Yes and double yes. This is at the root of how TRAs are able to silence and frighten people into submission. It's nonsense and is contributing to a dismissal of genuine transphobia.

Ereshkigal · 16/08/2018 09:39

Great piece. Wonder if he'll get shit for it. Not as much as a woman would I dare say and I expect he knows that. But well done Jonny.

Tide is turning. More and more people feel their conscience pricking enough to speak out.

Popchyk · 16/08/2018 09:39

Really good article. He totally understands it.

"This is the fundamental difference between LGB activism and trans activism; trans activism insists we all agree to understand sex and gender — understand ourselves — in line with the precepts of transgender ideology."

Charliethefeminist · 16/08/2018 09:39

That's the first time I've seen Stonewall called out so directly by a man.

scepticalwoman · 16/08/2018 09:39

And interesting that he has to state that he will only engage respectfully and constructively. Shameful but necessary.

Such a positive and intelligent article to start the day with.

Charliethefeminist · 16/08/2018 09:40

Nice one @jonnybest Wine cheers

WarmWishes · 16/08/2018 09:40

Is the Sarah Brown he references in the piece, the same one who is going for Ann Sinnot's recently vacated seat?

R0wantrees · 16/08/2018 09:41

Article describes TRA Sarah Brown (former lib dem Cambridge cllr):

"In 2007 QUN began a drive to programme a greater variety of events aimed at our lesbian audience. Like many LGBT or queer organisations, we’d been a bit gay men-centric. One of the artists I researched was a hugely talented singer songwriter — Bitch — yet to perform in the UK. She is top-notch musician who’d appeared in John Cameron Mitchell’s gorgeous film ‘Shortbus’ — I felt confident she would find an appreciative audience in Manchester.

So I invited her. She accepted and the event quickly sold out.

Then, a few weeks before the festival, I got an email.

It informed me that Bitch had performed at Michigan Womyn’s Music Festival, which had a policy of admitting only natal women. Apparently not only had Bitch appeared at the festival, she’d defended its women-born-women admission policy as well. Therefore, the email argued, Bitch was transphobic and the event must be cancelled.

Today, this sort of email from trans activists is commonplace, but in 2008 it was something new. As one of the authors of this email, Sarah Brown , recounts in the new book Trans Britain - Our Journey from the Shadows, what was about to happen between a small group of trans activists and Queer Up North would become the prototype for the many campaigns which were to follow — and which continue today."

Sarah Brown's role in Cambridge City Council's decision to modify the 2010 Equalities Act within weeks of it being launched is discussed on thread:
www.mumsnet.com/Talk/womens_rights/3322389-labour-councillor-quits-in-row-over-facilities-for-trans-people-the-times

From thread, PencilsinSpace comments:

"Here are the minutes from the Cambridge City Council meeting where they chose to play fast and loose with the EA when it was only 10 days old.

The committee received apologies for absence from Cllr Boyce, Cllr Brown attended as a substitute. Hmm

10/57/SR - Annual Review of Equalities (near the bottom of the page):

Councillor Brown proposed a number of amendments to strengthen the protection for transgender employees and service users. Other members of the committee expressed support for the proposal, although it was noted additional notice about the amendment would have aided the debate. The Head of Strategy and Partnership advised the committee of a number of proposed amendments to address the concerns raised. The Scrutiny Committee endorsed the following amendments by 5 votes to 0;

· Insert into “Employment Practices” section - We will not exclude transgender people from positions, which require a gender-appropriate candidate.

· Insert into the “Valuing our customers – delivering services” section - transgender people will not be excluded from gender-appropriate single sex/sex segregated facilities operated by the council

Shit stinks."

Charliethefeminist · 16/08/2018 09:41

I assumed that. Un* Sarah.

WarmWishes · 16/08/2018 09:44

Ah! So yes it is. I was pretty sure it was but just that it's a fairly common sounding name.

Anyway this is an interesting blog by the same Sarah and her version of it. Note how narcissistic and 'I changed the world' it sounds, compared to Jonathan's gentle and thoughtful piece. www.sarahlizzy.com/blog/?p=512

sociopathsunited · 16/08/2018 09:46

Thank you for posting this link, OP. I'm still educating myself, this is very enlightening and will take me on to further reading. We're not just screaming into a void, are we? Some people are actually starting to listen. And think for themselves.

WarmWishes · 16/08/2018 09:54

Is Sarah Brown the same person who tweeted something about suck my formaldehyde balls? Or was that someone else entirely?

gendercritter · 16/08/2018 09:55

That's a brilliant link. It's so good to know some people get it.

sociopathsunited · 16/08/2018 09:56

Do men like their balls being sucked? Genuine question.

heresyandwitchcraft · 16/08/2018 09:58

What a brilliant essay. Like a tall glass of lemonade after hiking in the desert. Thank you to OP for posting it, and to Jonny Best for writing it. Star

WarmWishes · 16/08/2018 09:59

That question made me lol! I think they do but the addition of formaldehyde makes it a super, special experience. I assume the balls in question were in a jar though, so I think this kind of ball sucking and associated enjoyment would be a particularly niche fetishX

Ereshkigal · 16/08/2018 09:59

That's Sarah, Warm. The same person who called the penis stickers "puerile" and "disgusting".

"Suck my formaldehyde pickled balls"

WarmWishes · 16/08/2018 10:06

Is there any good articles on Sarah or threads? I hate asking this but if there are any really great ones that I could be pointed to, as otherwise I imagine I could end up reading 100s. I'm interested in the candidates running for Ann's vacated seat.

terryleather · 16/08/2018 10:12

SB is also the one who tweeted (and I'm paraphrasing here) What woman doesn't like to slip on some nice lingerie and have a wank ...and they maintain AGP doesn't exist...Hmm

Anyway a great article article by Jonny Best asking some very pertinent questions.

BlytheByName · 16/08/2018 10:13

I messaged him to thank him and he sent the loveliest msg back after I declared I'd held a banner at London Pride protest. Said he felt he'd been a bit cowardly before and that sealed his decision to speak out. So courage does call to courage. More and more each day.
I don't think the trans side has the same group of people to call on to be courageous.... Courageous enough to call someone a terf?
I really believe the direction of momentum.is with us.

ArcheryAnnie · 16/08/2018 10:15

That's a brilliant article. And yes, it's unlikely anyone will come along and say he should be raped with a serrated dildo for writing it, as a woman writer would be, but the more excellent voices the better.

Ereshkigal · 16/08/2018 10:15

That's wonderful.

HesterMacaulay · 16/08/2018 10:16

Thank you for sharing this link. An excellent piece. Thank you Johnny Best.
A rational, well thought out article that calmly expresses what so many of us have been saying.

terryleather · 16/08/2018 10:16

Your post has made me grin Blythe.
Courage calls to courage indeed!
