Leo Noakes is a little lad whose alter ego is Violet.

Mum thought he was transitioning, but no, the little lad likes dressing in drag.

Courtney Act is a fan.

Bottom line?

You can carry a handbag, wear sequins, nail polish, Louboutin skyscraper heels and a crinoline.....

......and still be a boy/man.

Yes, men can wear whatever they like, and are quite brave to do so.
I actually am quite fond of good drag. Smile
For the record, I also acknowledge that transsexual women have been a part of to the artform for forever.

FruitOnAPlatter · 08/08/2018 16:24

Yes, men can wear whatever they like, and are quite brave to do so.

No more brave than all the women who paved the way for women today to wear trousers though - it's not some fantastic, amazing thing, just because a bloke is deigning to wear something feminine.

Vickyyyy · 08/08/2018 16:33

Theres no denying that men face a lot of criticism for doing 'feminine' stuff today. Women before us were very brave in pushing boundaries so to speak to allow women more of a choice. Its about time men started doing the same IMO.

I fucking really hate this recent trend of deciding someone who does not follow stereotypes 100% is trans. Do ANY of us follow the 'correct' stereotypes constantly?! I doubt it.

TransplantsArePlants · 08/08/2018 16:41

I was greeted with intakes of breath and Can You Say That? faces when I referred to Conchita Wurst as 'he', amongst my lefty female friends.

Conchita Wurst is the stage persona of Thomas Neuwith - a gay singer. He is male, identifies as male. Dresses as Conchita Wurst to perform in drag (the clue's in the somewhat humorous name name wurst=sausage)

This has come about because Stonewall put drag and cross-dressing under the Trans Umbrella and now people are confused and misled

placemats · 08/08/2018 16:47

For me feminine isn't about a handbag, coiffured hair, high heels, lipstick eye makeup and nail polish. Feminine has nothing to do with this.

It's other things.

I concur wholeheartedly.

Did you see this boy and his mum on Loose Women today? He is quite happy being a boy.

They surprised the child with a message from his hero, Courtney Act, who said inter alia: "You are inspiring a conversation. Why do we have to apply a gender to a piece of clothing?".

The answer to that is because Stonewall, Mermaids etc have been working behind the scenes to widen the definition of transgender to include every Tom, Dick and Harry, and any child who doesn't conform to a tight stereotype. And these bullies are getting taxpayers money to promote their malevolent propaganda.

placemats · 08/08/2018 17:39

I use men's razors to defoliate (I don't go near my face or my fanny).

I like the all in one hair and body washes men have too.

I'm a woman: an adult human female.

If I can buy those and be happy with my choices, why can't men buy the female stuff as well?

HamsterToast · 08/08/2018 20:43

Drag Queens are usually quite explicit that they are men, dressing as women, for entertainment purposes. Some of them are also NB or wanting to be trans but the majority are gay men who are happy being men. God don't these people watch Drag Race? They talk about it all the time.

SisterNotCisTerf · 08/08/2018 20:48

Sorry, what exactly is brave about putting on lady face for comical effect? How is it different than someone doing black face?

MadgeMidgerson · 08/08/2018 20:52

At this point in time, is their anything more reactionary, establishment or less transgressive than a drag act?

ooh a bloke in a wig, hold my hand it’s all too much Hmm

scotsheather · 08/08/2018 21:02

Shamefully I would probably think he WAS a girl if I didn't know but that shows how entrenched even fairly GNC women like me have gender signals in our heads. We see a kid with long hair and a dress and think girl. He looks happy and confident presenting that way but makes no pretence of being an actual girl.

I still remember fighting to wear trousers to school and even the default choice of a dress for parties etc.

CantankerousCamel · 08/08/2018 21:04

Yes people can wear what they like (in an ideal world)

But little children shouldn’t be dressing in sexualised clothing and being filmed

EVER

How is this suddenly okay?

BertrandRussell · 08/08/2018 21:05

Funny how drag is all progressive and freeing but blackface is racist.

AngryAttackKittens · 08/08/2018 21:09

Can genderists please leave this child alone? He's a happy flamboyant little probably gay kid. Doesn't need his puberty blocked or his plumbing rearranged, just give him a feather boa and some sequins and he'll be quite content.

FloralBunting · 08/08/2018 21:09

It happens to every subversive artform eventually. The cool people gravitate to it, everyone follows them, the subversive becomes mainstream and loses all its power to undermine the establishment and becomes part of the machine itself.

I'm rather sad, though unsurprised, this has happened with drag. I remember a time it actually had something interesting to say about gay men messing with sexual expectations and prejudices.

Now it's so vanilla the bloody Prime Minister probably sits down to watch Drag Race with a cuppa and some hobnobs.

CantankerousCamel · 08/08/2018 21:11

Are we really still suggesting a child in sexualised clothing and heavy make up is LIBERATING!

It’s terrifying. I don’t care what ‘gender’ is going on, it should not be in mainstream media or revered as progress

ILoveDolly · 08/08/2018 21:18

I got into a bit of a fight with friends about the kids in drag thing. It was after that story that a boy was banned from performing in drag at his school talent contest. My opinion is that sexualized heavily dressed up costume acts are not appropriate for school children. No drag, no burlesque stripping, none of that. Apparently I'm a bigot

CholloDeNombre · 08/08/2018 21:20

Whatever drag professes to say or undermine, the basic message is a heavily sexualised one. Why does anyone think it's ok to allow children to emulate highly sexualised behaviour for other adults to watch?

silentcrow · 08/08/2018 21:21

Thomas has been absolutely clear, repeatedly, that he is a gay man who works as a drag queen and has no intent to transition. I am not at all impressed with people trying to appropriate his hard work. As the character of Conchita (for whom "she" pronouns are used), she has an absolutely cracking voice.

By contrast Dana International is fully transitioned. I don't see why people can't handle both these realities.

Bespin · 08/08/2018 21:22

totally right drag is not transgender it is a art form anyone can do it and I have seen many different examples of non binary and woman also creating a persona, also some trans woman do it too. I know drag purists would be up in arms about others appropriating this art form but I think it can be a liberating form of expression for people.

CantankerousCamel · 08/08/2018 21:23

Oh good the thread has stopped being a fawn fest over the sexualised child.

I accept men in whatever clothing they like.

I accept a man saying he has transitioned out of his gender stereotypes

I do NOT accept that that man has transitioned into the opposite sex.

FloralBunting · 08/08/2018 21:30

Chollo, no, I don't think it's appropriate for kids at all. But unfortunately that's what happens to this kind of thing when it becomes mainstream and loses its context. It's a marketable product and kids are a growth market, quite literally.

scotsheather · 08/08/2018 21:32

I wouldn't call it particularly 'sexualised' clothing Cantankerous. Flamboyant yes, not something that would be concerning or provocative of girls the same age except maybe the high heels. Hes still a kid and is exploring.
