I realise how much precious time I have wasted on social media (Twitter, mainly) and yet only 17% of people use Twitter.

So I am vowing to spend much less time sparring with strangers (and bots?!) and to do what I can in the offline world.

I'm still tentative about putting my head above the parapet, but I've come to see that there is SO much you can achieve offline, even from the comfort of your sofa and/or without revealing your work to the wider world.

Examples:

Visit your elected representatives. I've met two face to face at their surgeries and both were hugely positive experiences, with real promise of follow-up. It made me feel more hopeful than I have in some time. Correspondence and meetings with elected reps are confidential.

Crawl ALL OVER your local council/NHS Trust/local education authority website. Read everything on there that relates to their equalities policies. Work out what the implications are for girls and women and then get writing. Write to the elected representatives but also write to Chief Executives, directors etc. Royal Mail used to say that 'nothing gets through like a letter' and it's really true. But equally, emailing is good too.

Subterfuge leafleting. Generate a leaflet/flyer: simple, clear messaging with a clear call to action. Point people towards WPUK or FPFW websites or create an anonymous blog (set blog up for free using Blogger or Wordpress) that sets out any particular local concerns. Buy a pack of Blutak and take a wander around women-only spaces and stick them in toilet cubicles or walls/mirrors: toilets and changing rooms in leisure centres, department stores, cafes and restaurants, public buildings, art galleries, theatres - EVERYWHERE!

Contact your friends to raise awareness of these issues. I've got an issue with one of our council policies and am discovering that virtually no-one was aware of the policy. It has sparked others to write to their councillors etc.

Form a feminist group. Meet up regularly for a drink/coffee to talk about what you can all do individually or collectively.

Try to get stuff in your local paper/media. Anything to break through into the mainstream to raise awareness whether it's a stunt (Man Friday style or whatever) or a hard-nosed review of council policies that you publish on a blog.

You won't believe how much power you really have if you organise!

This is not to say that being online has no value. Mumsnet has been so important to me, gathering intelligence about the trans/self-ID agenda. But most ordinary people do not engage online and we know how easy it is for trolls to infiltrate online groups.

Going to obey my own advice now, so signing off...

Yes! This :)

Thanks OP this post was really useful to me. I can apply some of your tips to other social and political issues I'm currently very concerned about.

Lovely inspiring post OP! Grin

Am hoping people would photo the poster as I wouldn't have a clue how to make a scannable barcode.

Gosh golly, it is fun to make them! What you need to make one for a URL is the QR code, I have attached (but not tested) two here. The second code will take you to cnet.com for the download page. It is a scaled down free version of their full programme.

I have tried out about four free barcode generator programmes, this is probably the easiest to use (some of the other codes, like 128, can be difficult to control parameters).

When you have installed the programme, just go to the tabs at the top and select then select QR codes from the list. There is the option of another tab as well. From either tab, once you put in the information, either save the file or copy to clipboard. Easy peasy. And loads of fun too!

The two attached codes should read:
womansplaceuk.org/
download.cnet.com/Free-Barcode-Generator/3000-2067_4-75940914.html

Seafret, there are websites that will generate QR codes (the scannable barcodes you speak of) for you. Always include the written URL as well, because many people lack smart phones.

Love this strong, positive message about reaching the people who live outside social media niches and echo chambers.

I've been considering doing some craft activism ie lobbying people with gifts that they may not bin because of the patience, time and effort that went into their creation. perhaps....

.... a slogan, or a statement painstakingly embroidered onto a hankie;
... a handknitted hat or fingerless gloves with powerful words in a contrasting colour.

The trouble is - I get so friggin' upset about the whole thing that my slogans may include such gems as "don't tell me to shut up, you bastard" and "Woke (sic) up and smell the misogyny"

Which is not the point. Hmm Back to the drawing board.

I like your style Pam, I am a bit the same way!

Happy to sticker the hell out of my local towns and city but less than creative on the design front. Any pics of the London stickerer's work?! Blatant request for plagiarism Grin

Here's an example of a homemade leaflet:

Okay, so a little next level, but hey...

It would get publicity.

Ereshkigal · 08/08/2018 08:15

With the Suffragettes connection and 100 years anniversary. It might make some pennies drop.

howonearthdidwegethere · 08/08/2018 08:18

If you have the ££, you can very easily design and order flyers, postcards, business cards from online printers like Vista Print.

They have loads of template designs so all you need to do is slot the wording in.

(Agree, Ereshkigal. It sure would. Reading the Pankhurst book certainly gave me some new ideas.) Wink

What about a sticker campaign with a link back to a Facebook page? If we saw those stickers we would understand the meaning. Perhaps it could be used a simple tool to spread awareness that GRA could mean acceptance of sharing changing rooms with female willies, since that will be what they are post GRA.

WarmWishes · 08/08/2018 08:29

Sorry I meant we would understand the meaning but would the general public fully understand the implications?

howonearthdidwegethere · 08/08/2018 08:34

Hi WarmWishes

Agree that it's helpful to allow people to follow up on what they've seen so they understand what's intended by the flyer/sticker.

So far I've tended to point people towards WPUK and FPFW as I reckon it should become clear after even the most superficial perusal of either website what the issue is.

But if someone was to set up a dedicated Facebook page, website, blog, I'd consider flagging that up.

Ideally you want a short, punchy URL that won't take up much space on the publicity materials.

WarmWishes · 08/08/2018 08:52

I was thinking about it last night in bed. I'm conscious that a Facebook page might take some time to moderate etc which is obviously a big commitment. Unless it was left for people to say whatever they want on either side? Free speech etc.

I am thinking is doing something that would be accessible and understandable by the general public, without using words which are politicised and alienating to some. I'm think a tabloid not broadsheet paper approach.

Just a really simple page that explains with words and pictures what the GRA means for everybody. We need the average mum and dad might understand that their sons or daughters might well be sharing toilets and changing rooms and even rooms on school trips with the opposite sex.

GirlScout72 · 08/08/2018 09:57

Hey

Just chipping in, concur with all said here. Just to say FPFW are in the process of producing leaflets and fliers and postcards exactly for this purpose, it'll all be on the website soon. There'll be packs that you can request posted out to you.

Cheers

GirlScout.

WarmWishes · 08/08/2018 09:59

Oh this is great! Thank you!

seafret · 08/08/2018 11:21

Wow! Thank you for the links and tips on barcode thingies LaSquirrel and HaXXor :) will try to get my head round it. Strugging brain-wise but will have a look ASAP.

And also look at those links to stickers and posters etc.

I am thinking of doing a range of posters, some with questions eg "why do some group want to change the law to allow men to selfID as women and access women's toilets and changing rooms?" Or something more challenging/ provocative posed as a sort of neutral question like "why are boys being allowed to self-ID as girls, join the Girl Guides and share tents without parental consent?" - to try to avoid the accusations of 'hating', then put some info about the dangers and women's rights and links to orgs. Might do some tear off strips too.

Or will wait for the FPFW stuff. Yay!! Than you!

placemats · 08/08/2018 12:02

Please do not link back to a Facebook page. The whole idea of this is to get offline. I've been doxxed because I liked ManFriday on Facebook. Not that it has impacted on my everyday life.

BetsyM00 · 08/08/2018 14:20

For those in Scotland there are some leaflets and stickers here.

howonearthdidwegethere · 08/08/2018 17:39

Thanks, BetsyM00. Those are great!

Btw is it possible to upload an image on these boards? How do I do it?

OP posts:
BetsyM00 · 08/08/2018 19:10

I'm on the web and just below where you type your message in there are three "Choose File" boxes to click for adding images to your post.

Your images don't show up in preview, but it does work when you press 'Post Message'.

ArcheryAnnie · 08/08/2018 22:13

BetsyM00 would you be willing to link to where that image you posted was? I think if you just post it as an image again it'll be deleted again.

BetsyM00 · 09/08/2018 00:46

I didn't post an image, I just posted a link.

Don't know why it was deleted. I'll pm it to you.
