Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

Scottish schoolkids to be taught to ‘choose their own gender’ in class

According to The Sun: It says that children need to “learn about what we mean by gender, that this is different from the sex we are assigned at birth”, and that “gender is about how we see and present ourselves in the world”.

Here

I’ haven’t seen the new guidance but it will
Become part of the Curriculum for Excellence and is aimed at children between five and nine.

It doesn’t make sense to me. Apparently it starts off explaining to children that girls and boys can all play football and cry etc (hurrah!)

But later will talk
About how we aren’t necessarily the gender we are assigned at birth.

But that doesn’t make sense. If we start out saying that gender stereotypes don’t matter because girls and boys can play football then what is the point of telling children they can choose a gender?

Surely the point is that there IS NO SUCH THING AS GENDER rather than reiterating the stereotypes but tell little kids that they can choose?

Set, if you are a teacher, have you been given the above guidance pack, and been asked to follow it? Are you aware of any group or training materials or sessions arranged for your school?

MorrisZapp · 05/08/2018 16:38

Mhairi Black has indeed swallowed the kool aid, sorry.

SetPhasersTaeMalkie · 05/08/2018 16:38

Thanks for the links.

YeTalkShiteHen · 05/08/2018 16:39

Has she? I’m really disappointed with her, she’s not usually so gullible.

SetPhasersTaeMalkie · 05/08/2018 16:40

Hi Leia. No I've not seen the pack of anything like it.

No training, as far as I know, has been planned.

SetPhasersTaeMalkie · 05/08/2018 16:41

Or, not of anything like it.

SetPhasersTaeMalkie · 05/08/2018 16:43

That was my thinking too Hen. About the Sun I mean.

YeTalkShiteHen · 05/08/2018 16:44

SetPhasersTaeMalkie I’m hoping it is the case. Although the new guidelines in some Scottish LAs (my own included) about self ID were a real worry, and still are!

placemats · 05/08/2018 16:46

Well for starters no person, unless the sex is indeterminate which is a private and serious matter, is assigned a sex at birth. Being intersex is a serious condition with life long consequences for the baby born intersex.

Secondly, if children are being taught to choose their own gender would not the change of name then follow?

It's a nonsense. Utter nonsense. I hope no tax payer's money is spent on this utter shite.

silentcrow · 05/08/2018 16:46

Mhairi Black has indeed swallowed the kool aid, sorry.
How very disappointing.

VickyEadie · 05/08/2018 16:47

Mhairi Black has indeed swallowed the kool aid, sorry.

She seems to have. I know that she does say that if she'd been born later and to less sensible parents she'd probably have been one of the kids persuaded they're trans, but she was at Glasgow pride wearing a 'trans rights are human rights' t shirt.

Not that I would argue with that sentiment per se, but we know that the people pushing the notion don't just mean 'the same human rights as everyone else'.

placemats · 05/08/2018 16:50

If trans women are indeed women, and trans men are indeed men, then why bother with trans rights?

YeTalkShiteHen · 05/08/2018 16:52

You know what is really depressing? That googling “Mhairi Black gender identity views” brings up one article about her comments on trans rights and a swathe about her using the word cunt while recounting misogynistic abuse in parliament and being shocked about it!

Tinycitrus · 05/08/2018 16:53

Yes as there is no link to the guidance I wonder if it is referring to the existing trans guidance adopted by local authorities.

The article reads as if this is being officially embedded as part of CfE.

So not new then?

I have never understood the love displayed on here for Mhairi Black. It's as if being able to swear equals being intelligent. She seems pretty useless as an MP- her attendance and voting record at Westminster is one of the worst of all MPs. However if you think she will side with you on this you are mistaken (unless of course she gets orders from SNP high command to change her mind)

Because that’s the only reason anyone would agree with her? That’s pretty narrow minded no?

I agree with her on many points, granted not this one, but I do actually agree with a lot of points she makes and I also like the blunt way she puts them across. Prevarication and obfuscation are all too common in politics.

placemats · 05/08/2018 16:57

Mhairi Black was called an 'ugly cunt' in Parliament. No prizes for the sex of the person issuing the slur or the party they belong to.

Tinycitrus · 05/08/2018 17:05

I like Mhari Black. I’m sure Westminster is not easy for her and she is very young to
Be navigating this.

The trans issue is a difficult one isn’t it. On the one hand it feels good to be progressive and inclusive and supportive of people who just want to live a certain way. You don’t need to look further than that to feel the warm glow.

But when it comes to what is taught to young children in schools who are just exploring their own identities and don’t understand the difference between sex and gender - then thus idea becomes an article of faith. A dogma.

OP posts:
LassWiADelicateAir · 05/08/2018 17:08

Who called her this in Parliament?

Mhairi Black was the first person to use that word in Parliament. I can't find any reference to her being called it in Parliament.

SetPhasersTaeMalkie · 05/08/2018 17:11

Thanks again for the links.

YeTalkShiteHen · 05/08/2018 17:16

She wasn’t called it in Parliament, she used the word in parliament so as not to censor what she faces (and other high profile women) daily.

Mossandclover · 05/08/2018 17:16

Mhairi Black is an MP isn’t she? Scottish Education is determined by Holyrood and MSPs who are in coalition with the Greens. Though the SNP are like the Borg and vote en masse - they represent the party not constituents.

VickyEadie · 05/08/2018 17:19

I like Mhairi Black. I think she's a talented and intelligent person. I believe her attendance record at Westminster was badly affected this past year by illness, for the record.

She's not the only person I admire to have swallowed the transactivist line without seeing the dangers and implications, however.

placemats · 05/08/2018 17:24

Sorry I got that wrong. She was describing who was calling her an ugly cunt. Online abuse. In Parliament. Still, even though I've majorly fallen out with the Labour Party, would never countenance the LibDems and might just vote Conservative if the proper person was on board, sadly that doesn't include my constituency, I know of them all, the most sexist and disgusting is the Conservative Party.

Got the same sort of gasps as a woman would if she was breast feeding.
