PHE to call women "women" in a bid to reduce no-shows for cervical cancer screening

Well, would you look at that...

Public Health England seem to think the very best way to reach more women for cervical cancer screening is to launch a high-profile campaign around the 10 year anniversary of the death of Jade Goody (a woman) using the term...women.

Groundbreaking stuff Hmm

Am I missing something?

UpstartCrow · 20/07/2018 21:26

cheminotte A recent Cancer Research campaign was aimed at 'anyone with a cervix', so as not to offend the trans community.

Its likely that many women had no idea that included them.

ShotsFired · 20/07/2018 21:31

@cheminotte and any others wondering...

My apologies for not including a link for context:

Well, this new initiative of calling cervix-owners "women" sounds craaaazzzzy.

But it just might work.

PencilsInSpace · 20/07/2018 21:38

I'll believe it when I see the campaign.

LassWiADelicateAir · 20/07/2018 21:39

Do you have to crow bar trans rights into everything?

This is valuable campaign. Jade Goody's death was very sad and it left 2 very young children without a mother buy hey ho let's make it yet another trans thread.

littlbrowndog · 20/07/2018 21:41

U missed the point lass. So missed it

cheminotte · 20/07/2018 21:43

Aha - thanks for clarifying.
Yes, targeting women does seem a bit too obvious!

LassWiADelicateAir · 20/07/2018 21:46

No, not really. Anyway as this is going to be yet another trans thread it will join the others I don't read.

ReluctantCamper · 20/07/2018 21:50
LastGirlOnTheLeft · 20/07/2018 21:50

🤔How could anyone not see from the title of the thread that it would include trans stuff? Strange.

littlbrowndog · 20/07/2018 21:51

Naw u did and u made sure we seen ur post.

LastGirlOnTheLeft · 20/07/2018 21:52

She deliberately missed the point.

ShotsFired · 20/07/2018 21:53

The point is extremely relevant Lass. I'm sorry you can't see that.

Other campaigns have used confusing and near-exclusionary scientific wording that would have the very likely effect of many women missing out on smears because they don't understand that "cervix haver" = "woman".

So the upshot would be that many women would indeed miss out on vital health screening for no good reason whatsoever.

So it is indeed excellent that PHE are using an unambiguous and very clearly understood word that will speak to a much wider audience, rather than worrying more about just being right-on.

Popchyk · 20/07/2018 21:55

Shots was drawing a parallel with another Cancer Research campaign which did not reference women at all, but only "anyone with a cervix". And making the point that referring to women as women might actually help their campaign.

But thank goodness you always avoid trans threads, eh Lass?

God knows where we'd be if you actually turned up crowbarring your disapproval into every thread. That you avoid. And don't read. And don't respond to.

littlbrowndog · 20/07/2018 21:57

Am not sorry To that sorta deliberate missing the point

ShotsFired · 20/07/2018 21:58

I bet Lass is definitely not reading this one. Absolutely not. Really, really, really not reading it Grin

littlbrowndog · 20/07/2018 21:59

Oh lols pop. Nailed it. Haha 😎😎

TerfsUp · 20/07/2018 21:59

Bye, Lass.

LastGirlOnTheLeft · 20/07/2018 21:59

Shots...bet her fingers are itching!! But nooo...she's not reading, no way! 😂😂

Italiangreyhound · 20/07/2018 22:08

Public Health England are very evidence based. I have been following the progress of the introduction of the new HPV primary testing on the blog.

It's a salient point the OP makes. I'm sure the thread will well cope without those who fail to understand that.
