Am I Agender? Are you?

Let’s forget the following facts

  • I was born with a vagina
  • I have a female body
  • I started menstruating aged 11
  • I develop breasts around the same age
  • I have been pregnant
  • I have birthed several children
  • I have had a c-section
  • I have breastfed some of those children
  • I have medical conditions that only impact women
  • I have been vaginally raped

BUT
I reject gender and I would not “identify” as a Follower if Genderism. I am a woman because I am an adult human female, I am not however a woman because of societal standards of gender. I am genderless.

If Agender is defined as
“a term which can be literally translated as 'without gender'. It can be seen either as a non-binary gender identity or as a statement of not having a gender identity. People who identify as agender may describe themselves as one or more of the following: Genderless or lacking gender.”
am I therefore Agender?
If I identify as Agender, will my opinion now be more or less valid when discussing Self ID etc.?

Does anyone else find themselves fitting neatly into the Agender category?

Me.

I am female but I don't 'identify' as a woman in the sense that I accept the gender identity imposed on me by society based on the fact I was born female.

I have a personality and character traits but I don't have a 'gender' on the basis that I enjoy activities and interests and have behavioural characteristics that are associated with both men and women but I tend to reject those that are associated with 'woman' that restrict me in any way.

Glad to not be alone in my Agender status.
I wonder if there are clubs we can join.
I’m going to update my Twitter bio!

I filled in one of those "what gender are you" batshit quizzes online a while back and it did put me down as Agender..
I am an adult human female and I totally reject gender.

KimCheesePickle · 19/07/2018 15:56

No, even if you self-identify as agender, you are opting out in an individualist way, leaving the bars of the cage in place for everyone else. I am collectivistly anti-gender. People can voluntarily opt into gender if they wish, but the concept should hold no more weight or meaning in law/politics/society than one having a preference for caramel yoghurt or strawberry yoghurt.

Caaarrrl · 19/07/2018 15:58

I am also agender. I do not identify as a woman. I am however, very definitely a woman because I am an adult female human.

CaoNiMa · 19/07/2018 16:03

Agender here as well.

UglyCathKidstonBag · 19/07/2018 16:05

Yay so many Agender sisters(?)!

Just done online quiz and it said that I should be a boy. Still definitely an adult female human though so just shows what crap it all is really.

WeAreGerbil · 19/07/2018 16:10

I don't actually believe gender is a property of individuals, I think it's a set of societal stereotypes. Personality wise I am probably more "masculine", but I don't really consider myself to have a gender so I guess I'm agender too.

slowrun · 19/07/2018 16:15

I fit pretty neatly into the tradional stereotype of a woman in terms of how I appear and what I do. However if our society were different and supported and encouraged women differently I think what I do might be more like the traditional male stereotype. Society imposes gender norms not the individual. So gender does not necessarily reflect anything personal about me only how I have responded to the circumstances of my socialisation.

HotRocker · 19/07/2018 17:44

I am an adult human female, that is all. Anything else is just preference.

Totally agree with Kimcheesepickle.

JellySlice · 19/07/2018 18:02

I don't care.

I don't mean that rudely, but, if we consider 'gender' to indicate norms imposed by society, it becomes a label used by others to help them understand who you are, what you are likely to do, and how they can/should/ought/choose to behave around you.

I am a woman because I am an adult, female human.

Today I might have done the shopping wearing a push-up bra, frock, heels and makeup, and be about to cook so that dinner is on the table when dh walks in. That doesn't define me, it just describes my behaviour. It certainly does not describe my identity.

So I don't care what label society gives my behaviour, as long at it is not something offensive like 'cis' or 'not-man'.

ErrolTheDragon · 19/07/2018 19:15

I'm not philosophically averse to 'agender' as analogous to atheist (a lack of belief and a rejection of gender or gods) but also take Kim's point. At a social level maybe something more like a 'gender secularist' ... people can believe what they want about gender but it should confer no privilege and incur no discrimination and should not be taught as fact etc.

UglyCathKidstonBag · 19/07/2018 19:17

Umm I wasn’t being serious...

CigarsofthePharoahs · 19/07/2018 19:23

I don't particularly like being a woman. Having said that, I'm not sure I'd particularly like being a man either.
Biology has its own rules though.
I'd put my gender in the "sod it" category.

slowrun · 19/07/2018 19:24

But, OP, regardless of whether you are being serious or not, it is undoubtedly an extremely pertinent subject considering what is going on within 'gender politics' at the moment.....

Well yes that’s the point.
I don’t want any of these labels, I actively reject them - I am an adult human female, a woman. I am not agender but the definition fits me exactly.

If it’s so easy just to pick up a niche label and plonk it on ones self it’s also easy to narrow down the meaning of woman to being basically “only women who shop in this dress shop and men who set the parameters.”
Eventually we will end up with a list of personalities we can pick from.

I find it bemusing that being "agender" - not having a gender - is a type of gender.

The whole ideology is so ridiculous.

Yep I'm agender and so exactly the same in my uniqueness of being as my male agender friends.

slowrun · 19/07/2018 20:05

But OP, with self ID, in theory, you would self define your gender so do not have to accept that definition...

So...ahem...you fit any gender and non as you see fit. (Unless you argue against this and are deemed 'cis', I suppose).

thebewilderness · 19/07/2018 20:11

The persistent effort by Followers of Genderism to replace the noun sex with the verb gender has already gone too far.

UglyCathKidstonBag · 19/07/2018 20:12

Me too.

I love me. I love my female form. I love that my body produced children. And I've had female diseases too.

slowrun · 19/07/2018 20:35

In some ways it's an argument in terms of what you prefer to disclose to officials: sex or gender.

My initial thinking is why do officials need to know your gender? Sex, yes, is relevant for making provision in terms of differing medical and health issues occurring between the sexes and ensuring there is no discrimination in relation to this. Gender is only relevant in contexts where there is sex discrimination, for example if different rules are enforced for no biological reason.

slowrun · 19/07/2018 20:41

Self ID supports each person deciding their own gender so what information does this actually communicate officialdom? That you have made a decision. You have picked an option. Nothing else really. You could be either sex. Health issues that might affect you are unknown. Accommodations that might have to be made for your physical needs, unknown.
