He is being tweeted by an unhappy LGBT+ community in response to his signing a letter in the morning star.

The bomb threat came from Hastings. I noted tweeters to Len from the Hastings community.

I notice that some on there also noted:

"..who are now wanting to ban gay guys from using surrrogates [sic]."

So, yet again, a debate about the ethics of surrogacy and concern for women's bodies (biology) used to show how bad we are. #nodebate is a blanket term, it seems. No debate about anything, even about the need for debate.....................

Well done Len!

ToeToToe · 04/07/2018 12:23

Well done, Len McCluskey, and thank you.

ToeToToe · 04/07/2018 12:24

According to one tweeter "Unite is now transphobic."

Bollocks is it - looking out for the rights of women, and listening to women, is not transphobic.

Macareaux · 04/07/2018 12:29

The vast majority of comments are against Len. Time to show him some support.

Why would a letter calling for civil discourse and no violence make LGBT individuals unhappy? Is violence what they want? I don't think it's what the LGB want.

TimeLady · 04/07/2018 12:52

I'm no fan of McLuskey but it'll be interesting to see his response, as a man who doesn't strike me as easily intimidated. Nor is he likely to be a chicken livered apologist.

They might just have picked on the wrong guy....

I agree. I salute Len and the other signatories Flowers

BettyDuMonde · 04/07/2018 13:01

Responding to a request for civil debate by shouting down the request and making accusations of bigotry only illustrates the dire need for such requests!

Ereshkigal · 04/07/2018 13:19

Well done Len. Thank you.

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 04/07/2018 13:36

Blooming Nora, all the letter is asking for is an end to violence and intimidation. So the people attacking Len are in favour of these things. Openly.

They mostly seem upset that Unite aren't acknowledging all the terrible violence committed by feminist women against trans people.

I'm still waiting for examples of beatings GC women have dished out, and the rape/bomb threats they have made.

I believe some mean things may have been said on twitter though so I guess that evens it out.

I think we live in a topsy turvy world now where upsetting someone with words on a computer screen is far, far worse that physically harming someone in reality.

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 04/07/2018 14:43

'I think we live in a topsy turvy world now where upsetting someone with words on a computer screen is far, far worse that physically harming someone in reality.'

If only it were that consistent. As it is I rather think it would depend who did it to whom...

James Kirkup has picked up on the letter in a Spectator blog post today. It's great that he's keeping on keeping on!

James Kirkup has picked up on the letter in a Spectator blog post today. It's great that he's keeping on keeping on!

(extract)
"Now, I’m a dedicated centrist and I happen to agree with every word of that letter. I know paid-up Tories who would too.

But the contents of that letter are not the story here. The story is in the signatories, who include Len McCluskey of the Unite union, as well as several other senior trade unionists. (Lindsey German, a founder of Stop the War and a close friend of Jeremy Corbyn is there too; Andrew Murray, another very senior Corbynista signed a similar letter earlier this year. In short, a very significant and, in Labour terms, powerful group of unionists and activists has raised some quite serious concerns about the violent intimidation of women in the gender debate.

In a previous job as a political reporter, I’d probably have summarised that letter something like this:

Transgender activists who use threats of violence to frighten feminist critics are bringing the Labour movement into disrepute, Britain’s top trade union leader has said. Len McCluskey of the Unite union has joined several other close allies of Jeremy Corbyn to warn that “trans rights activists” using threats and intimidation have left many women “too frightened” to engage in political debate..." OvaHere · 04/07/2018 15:58

Len is really getting pilled on. Usually this level of ire is reserved for women.

I really hope others warned him to expect this and he doesn't capitulate and backtrack.

Chaotica · 04/07/2018 16:03

Another one here who is grateful to Len and all the other signatories for standing up in public. Thanks!

ToeToToe · 04/07/2018 16:13

Len is getting piled on by the Twatterati because he actually has some clout in this debate - Unite is influential, the Unions are influential when it comes to Labour policy. I seem to remember Kiri Tunks getting similar when she was appointed, because she is known to be gender critical.

I'm sure Len has stood up to worse than a Twitter mob in his time. Personally, I've tweeted support for him - I suggest all MNetters on Twatter do the same.

I'm pleasantly surprised by the news on this today - that James K article is very positive, opinion polling shows what I've suspected all along - that the general public is not in favour of self ID, and even Penny M has said that women's voices must be heard.

woman11017 · 04/07/2018 16:22

We always were the backbone of the British trades union movement, with great women like Annie Bessant, Frances O Grady and Anne Ruzylo. And even greater members organising and taking part in actions.
Len's wise. If unions are to survive we all need the 52% in them.

heresyandwitchcraft · 04/07/2018 16:39

Holy cow, the TRAs are really going after him. Is this because he's supposed to be on "their side," unquestioningly (just like feminists)? It's the whole "apostasy is worse than always being a heathen" thing.
FWIW Len, I thank you from the bottom of my heart for siding with women trying to speak.

terryleather · 04/07/2018 16:42

Well done Len.

Don the underpants of steel and please do not back down when the braying pack descends as it already seems to be doing...

LangCleg · 04/07/2018 16:48

I, for one, am rather glad these people don't know when to keep it civil because it's got a reach outside their bubble and no kindly editor to hide all their nasty. Len McCluskey, I am sure, is not in the least bit intimidated by a Twitter pile-on so I'm not worried about him. All that is being achieved there is that a wider audience will see the crazy of the extremists on full display. Good.

LangCleg · 04/07/2018 16:53

They've told so many ordinary women to DIAF without censure that I think they now believe it to be normal political discourse and it's fine to do it to everyone. Let them demonstrate that!

enoughisenough12 · 04/07/2018 16:54

Imagine arguing with the Unions that they're wrong to condemn threats, violence and intimidation

Clueless! Grin
