BBC Bias - Collecting Examples here

The lack of representation of the impact on women's rights on Newsnight last night while the clear problems were dismissed was ridiculous.

This thread is collecting examples of BBC failing to provide balance in representing women's concerns.

Only anecdotal evidence from myself today but up until earlier this year I pretty much only ever looked at the BBC news website and the Guardian website to get my news. This meant that I only found out about the proposed reform to the law and about transgender ideology accidentally from Reddit. I was two years behind all of the information that is out there on the internet, because the BBC and the Guardian hadn't reported a single negative thing about what the TRAs had been doing. I found out after the consultation had closed that the government was asking for feedback on the reform - I don't recall seeing a single article telling the public they could do this on either the BBC or Guardian websites. This all shows clear bias on the side of the TRAs and a lack of consideration for women who might not be happy about the reform and want to give feedback about it.

I had panic attacks and have missed several nights sleep because I feel like I'm living in a nightmare. Ie, I had no idea that TRAs had started to insist they are the same as women, when for years everyone (including themselves) knew they were men who felt happier dressing as women. I have no idea how such an insane ideology has been allowed to get any sort of airtime and is being considered being made law! I feel like I've been asleep in a dream and woke up in a nightmare.

On a positive note, I no longer use either the Guardian or the BBC to get my news. It opened up my eyes to see how biased they are because not only are they only putting pro-TRA views, they also regularly fail to report on matters related to this debate entirely, creating a sort of media blackout. I've started looking at a range of different news sources to build up a clearer picture of what is going on.

Exception that proves the rule in how nbc reports on male criminals who self ID?
Rightly this murderer, thief, poisoner and drug dealer is described with his male name and pronouns throughout, then incidental to the rest of the reporting on his recent sentencing, it says ‘who now identifies as female’.

www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-london-49661915

This report from July doesn’t mention the self ID as ‘female’ all- so for all we can know the murderer began to identify as female only as sentencing time approached.

www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-london-48928442

No questions asked about whether this extremely dangerous person who often described themselves as a nurse, is now going to be housed in male or female prison though.

Finally possibly there is some potential police homophobia in terms of a lot of gay men and their families saying their crime reports have not been taken seriously where GHB use has been involved. BBC has quoted them but not actually looked into this angle.

Does also seem strange that GHB which is so dangerous is only a class C drug. Like Valium and steroids: www.gov.uk/penalties-drug-possession-dealing

The BBC is teaching children that being a lesbian is about gender.
Link to article and thread below:

www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/topics/zhvbt39/articles/z6smbdm

www.mumsnet.com/Talk/womens_rights/3697303-BBC-Bitesize-is-teaching-children-being-a-lesbian-is-about-gender

Complaints lodged with BBC, including description of transgender and "We may be male, but feel more comfortable thinking of ourselves as a female. We may be a woman, but identify with the outlook and social norms of men. When we feel this way, we are transgender."

The BBC corrected the sexuality section, but not the gender section. It sent out the same stock response:

' We were sorry to hear you were unhappy with some of the wording.
We would like to assure you we worked with teachers, CCEA and curriculum experts so we felt confident in publishing the content; however as a result of user feedback like yours, we have now made some corrections.'

Currently following up complaint to ask why the "feel like a woman" and transgender/ rigid gender stereotypes rubbish is still in place.

Please complain as the BBC is teaching this to children on an educational website.

I see that the constant dripdripdrip that is radio 4’s ‘Just a Girl’ drama is still going.

Not exactly just a girl. In fact, ‘Not just a girl’ would be a better title. There is an honest, balanced drama to be made on this subject, but this isn’t it.

Figureof80 · 25/10/2019 09:24

More bias. www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-50166900
No mention of the hate speech from trans activists online suggesting females be burnt, punched or thumped with a baseball bat. Of course that’s not hate speech is it BBC? Doesn’t count when it’s directed at women does it BBC?

Sicario · 25/10/2019 09:54

@Figureof80 - spot on.

tobee · 25/10/2019 14:31

It made me think, since it's by the LGBT correspondent, do they still have a women's correspondent? Or did they ever?

Slightly off topic but the bias is being noted. I don’t know the politics of gatestone.

Figureof80 · 04/11/2019 12:16

This is shameless propaganda: www.bbc.co.uk/news/av/newsbeat-50242351/trans-and-a-triplet-coming-out-brought-our-family-closer-together

From Newsbeat therefore aimed specifically at young people. Triplets, 17 years old, sat in a sunny garden eulogising over the transition of one female to male sibling. Talk about proms and how Josh was always a tomboy giving a strong inference that tomboy = trans, brief mention that Josh has been on hormones for six months and is contemplating surgery. No explanation of what this entails, no negatives mentioned at all. Final sentence is a giggling, "Santa made it happen".

Mermaids given a name check in the blurb beneath the film.

Where is the balance in this report? Shouldn't they at least mention there are downsides to a medicalised pathway i.e. sterility, scarring?

Newuser123123 · 07/11/2019 19:08

Third article down on the BBC news app (headline a teenage girl murdered by men) an article about Caitlyn Jenner, on how happy she* is now. This is the third most important thing for the UK to know about at the moment.

www.bbc.co.uk/news/av/uk-england-dorset-50319300/trans-baby-boomer-i-thought-i-was-a-male-and-that-was-the-end-of-it

Fluff piece all about this person who thought they were a man for most of their life, but really liked 'female clothing'. Notable for the person in question going on at length about this as they travel to a glitzy lingerie launch for lingerie aimed at transgender people, juxtaposed with a brief comment from Julia Long, protesting outside, saying that women are biological realities, not clothing choices, and then the person who is the focus of the film saying it made them sad because they are 'a woman too'. All presented as very enlightened.

ChattyLion · 22/12/2019 08:10

Newuser please do add links on here because it’s really helpful to gather them together in one place as a resource/evidence thread of BBC bias when you spot it.

In other news, I noticed that Dave Lee the BBCs tech correspondent is moving on. He doesn’t say where to here but he’s tweeted that he is going to work for the Financial Times in San Fran.
www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-50874160
He wrote some really moving and dedicated journalistic pieces in that BBC role, such as ‘Tumblr's porn ban abandons the marginalised’, a tragic tale of some people being denied some porn Hmm ..(which was an action being taken by Tumblr in response to child rape videos being uploaded..)
So glad that all those marginalised people have Dave Lee to fearlessly speak up for them.

(This article feels like it’s been edited quite a bit since I first posted it upthread but unfortunately I didn’t take screen shots at the time.)

Rubidium · 22/12/2019 09:28

I think Newuser is referring to this: www.bbc.co.uk/news/av/uk-50854359/the-studios-teaching-trans-women-how-to-be-more-feminine

Newuser123123 · 22/12/2019 10:01

Sorry, yes that's it. Just being too lazy to work out how to link from the app x

Cuntysnark · 22/12/2019 10:10

I was just coming here to post that, alerted by Mr Cuntysnark. He’s a good ‘un.

ChattyLion · 22/12/2019 13:59

Thanks for the link- had to laugh grimly when they applied the misogyny to the 50 year old transwomen too, ‘miniskirts are absolutely not acceptable’ Hmm

CarrotBarrot · 22/12/2019 18:25

The thing that struck me about today's BBC film was the speech therapist saying transwomen have it hard because they have 'male vocal chords'. I wonder if she describes the filmed session as teaching a man to sound like a woman (and if 'Nicole' would take offence at that).

SawingForTeens · 25/01/2020 11:34

Radio 4 covers this very briefly on the Today program, not thoroughly but it is mentioned as something that is happening and is worthy to treat as "news", but NOT appearing on BBC News page, despite being covered by Spectator, Telegraph, Times, etc.:

"I'm preparing a complaint to go to the BBC about Evan Davis' interview of Harry Miller. I've listened again to the interview and had a look at the High Court judgement and here are my notes in case anyone else is minded to complain.

The essence of my complaint is going to be that Evan Davis went into the interview already with the idea in his head that Miller was “anti-trans”, ie prejudiced against trans people, and the evidence of this is that Davis called Miller “anti-trans” four times, even though Miller explained his position and significantly that Davis' use of the term went against what was in the High Court judgement, see the quotes below. As such, Davis was either speaking from his own prejudice having not checked whether that was in conflict with the judgement or had decided to misrepresent what was in the judgement.

The High Court judgement:

Miller's tweets displayed no "hatred or prejudice to the transgender community"

Miller's "tweets were not targeted at Mrs B [the person who had originally made a complaint to the Police], nor even the transgender community" and he had "expressed the sort of views that are also held by many academics as part of a complex multi-faceted debate".

Before the interview started Evan Davis said Miller had made "anti-trans" tweets. Miller challenged this, Davis said "I think anyone reading your tweets would say you are anti-trans and let's just call a spade a spade". This contradicts the judgement. Miller explained he was not against trans people but was "mocking the idea that it's possible for an immutable characteristic like sex to change just because somebody says so". Davis said "The listener would benefit that from knowing it's reasonable to call them [the tweets] "anti-trans"". This is particularly problematic. Davis is saying that the listener would benefit from his view of the tweets which is in contradiction to the view of the High Court. As such, Davis is misleading the listener.

Other comments by Davis:

"You come across as a bit obsessed about something which you could quite happily ignore ... you're not really debating here."

"you can't pretend ... you are not being anti-trans, of course you are."

Davis used the term "anti-trans" four times in the interview which since this wasn't in the judgement had come from Davis' prejudgement of Miller. This view, contradicted by what was in the judgement, was what Davis had wanted to get across to the audience.

In the interview, Davis referred to Miller's involvement in the debate as "weird". If the interview had been about something else, away from the difficult trans issue, would it be reasonable for an interviewer to refer to someone involved in a debate about proposed legal changes as "obsessed" and "weird"?

Obviously the interview was not compatible with the BBC Charter, particularly the first Public Purpose of the BBC:

"To provide impartial news and information to help people understand and engage with the world around them: the BBC should provide duly accurate and impartial news, current affairs and factual programming to build people’s understanding of all parts of the United Kingdom and of the wider world. Its content should be provided to the highest editorial standards. It should offer a range and depth of analysis and content not widely available from other United Kingdom news providers, using the highest calibre presenters and journalists, and championing freedom of expression, so that all audiences can engage fully with major local, regional, national, United Kingdom and global issues and participate in the democratic process, at all levels, as active and informed citizens."
