Trans gender inmates must be allowed make-up

BiologyIsReal · 29/06/2018 17:17

Can't find the article on line but today's print Daily Telegraph reported that transgender prisoners must have access to make-up. Inspectors from the Independent Monitoring Board said 12 trans gender inmates at HMP Littlehey (Cambridgeshire) had been unable to "fully live in gender" as they could not buy cosmetics such as lipstick, mascara and blusher from the Avon catalogue.

Apparently a previous report revealed now the equalities governor had introduced pop up shops to allow trans gender inmates to buy female clothing such as skirts, bras and dresses.

Of course if you can't access skirts, lipstick and all the faldoodlery that makes you a woman then you can't possibly be a woman can you?

Welcome to the parallel universe of what makes you a woman. Checks own betrousered legs and bare face in the mirror and ponders....

That's me screwed. I'm wearing shorts, t shirt and not a scrap of makeup. Sorry ladies, it looks like I'm not one of you.

But seriously, (abandon GC views here) if transwomen identify as the female gender and it's an innate part of themselves, then it wouldn't matter about having performative features like makeup? They'd still be just as much of a transwoman without the makeup.

Gileswithachainsaw · 29/06/2018 17:27

Why? What happens when they can't have their make up?

Are all female prisoners and detainees at police stations etc going to be getting San pro when they need it?

Oh wait... they actual women so no one gives a shit

UglyCathKidstonBag · 29/06/2018 17:33

I wonder if a woman who commits a crime whilst wearing trousers will be sent to the male prison estate?

This

nauticant · 29/06/2018 17:34

then it wouldn't matter about having performative features like makeup?

The point about displaying the outward trappings of femininity is that it bolsters their case that it would be risky for them to remain in a men's prison. It's a neat tactical move.

moimichme · 29/06/2018 17:40

Ah, that has a twisted sort of logic, nauticant. I was wondering why they would so want to stand out as different!

YY

Such a first world problem /s

And what about the women who don't have access to sanitary products and the like - WTF - where are the priorities? And why do 0.6% get prioritised over 51% - bloody madness.

JenBarber · 29/06/2018 17:44

I'm currently wearing men's pyjamas (They have pockets. Pockets!!) and no make up.

Am I a man?

Break it to me genttly...

enoughisenough12 · 29/06/2018 17:44

Presumably all women in prison are allowed this to ensure that they perform womanhood to the required standard? Otherwise it must be discriminatory surely?

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 29/06/2018 17:45

Literally, womanformallyknownaswoman!

Is it because of the threat of violence or other forms of aggression? I just don't understand why prisoners, who are surely (rightly or wrongly) at the bottom of the heap socially, are able to call the shots in this way if they are male-bodied but struggle to get what they really need for their dignity and for the good hygiene and health of all around them if they are female-bodied. What a puzzle. Hmm

BiologyIsReal · 29/06/2018 17:50

After the nonsense of that article I was immensely cheered today. My DH went to hospital for some tests and had to fill in a form. It said: "What is your sex?" Then gave boxes to tick male or female.

Not gender - sex! At least that form writer has a GCSE in biology.

What sort of make-up?

I’m sure they won’t be happy with a bit of Rimmel or Collection 2000. And I would have thought that make-up would provide the perfect way to smuggle drugs into prison. Loose powder?!

SleepWarrior · 29/06/2018 18:07

Maybe the female inmates will need makeup to support their gender identity too? Or is gender identity only for those that don't conform to the 'norm'. It makes NO SENSE.

Gender critical or not, can't we just segregate inmates by sex. Surely it's partly so prisoners can't procreate because that would be a nightmare (among other reasons) - keep the eggs and sperm away from each other, the end.

madja · 29/06/2018 18:11

Do bio females have the right to demand make-up? Genuine question, I have no idea.

UpstartCrow · 29/06/2018 18:11

Female prisoners don't get as much money or clothing and make up as trans prisoners.

And they can't always access sanpro;

misscockerspaniel · 29/06/2018 18:12

On a positive note, HMP Littlehay is a category C male sex offenders prison so at least these males haven't been placed in a women's prison. (Yes, more male sex offenders claiming to be women. I wonder why Hmm)

Gileswithachainsaw · 29/06/2018 18:15

irma
You seem to forget that all things dangerous risky creepy inappropriate against regulations or just plain wrong quit being so when the word trans is involved.

Loose powder wont be a risk unless for trans. Like their penis we have to pretend it's all legit

madja · 29/06/2018 18:16

What a surprise 🙄
Of course make up is more important than San pro. /s

bunbunny · 29/06/2018 18:31

How much access to makeup do women in womens prisons have? Do they have access to avon catalogues?

PurpleCrowbar · 29/06/2018 18:42

Hmmm.

I don't see why make up in prison shouldn't be a thing, really.

However. It should be on offer in the hospital shop, & if that's what you want to spend your money (is it wages from working in prison?) on, rather than fags or sweets or whatever, why not.

Can female prisoners buy makeup in this way? I'd vaguely assumed they could. IMO the rule should just be the same for everyone.

If you happen to be biologically male though, wearing lipstick still just means that you are a man who likes wearing lipstick...

Am I missing something? Why should we be bothered about this? Confused

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 29/06/2018 18:43

I also need to know about women's access to make up etc. If women are allowed make up in prison then, IMO, so should men.

PurpleCrowbar · 29/06/2018 18:44

X posted with everyone about rules for female prisoners!

SuperDandy · 29/06/2018 18:45

It would make sense for prisoners in equivalent prison levels of either male or female estates to have access to equivalent products and services. If this is a move that's addresses a previous non equivalence then that's a good thing.

E.g. If you consider it the other way around, and, say footballs and woodworking classes were unavailable in the women's estate but were in the men's, it would be reasonable for prisoners in the women's estate to say actually we should have access to those things too.

heresyandwitchcraft · 29/06/2018 18:51

Peeks through fingers
Nope. Makeup is just not a human rights issue... I can't with this today.
