Had a Feminist rant at DP's best mate

I had a feminist rant at DP's best mate the other evening. I went on for ages. And he completely and utterly agreed with me. His comments were 'that's more than a bit crap', 'hadn't thought of it like that' plus loads of wtf.
At his age you would have thought he would have noticed but apparently not.
He then promptly identified as a lesbian. He did very well. He managed a whole five seconds before cracking up laughing. Although I didn't go on too much about the gender debate (he got that straight away). I was more on about the systematic way in which females are put down and controlled.
Instead of calling him DP's best mate I shall now call him Gender Critical Cabbie (but only in my head - he wouldn't have a clue what I was on about).
Anyway - it was in all a good conversation. He just hadn't bothered noticing till now.

But when you see it you can't unsee it.
A little at a time.

okay? Hmm

MistOnTheWater · 27/06/2018 14:53

Sorry CaptainKirksparetupee I was actually quite happy to get someone who has never thought about feminism to think about it. Meh

Oh, congratulations!

Sorry the post was a bit unclear as you used "Rant" which is negative. Sounded more like a discussion.

MistOnTheWater · 27/06/2018 15:01

I meant a rant in the way I was talking to him. Think he was a bit stunned. Anyway - baby steps. I'm new to FWR (though have lurked for ages, prob don't know the conventions)

A cabbie you say? Oooh. Prime position to talk people's ears off. Grin

Branleuse · 27/06/2018 18:22

you peak patriarchied him

IfyouseeRitaMoreno · 27/06/2018 18:33

I wouldn’t worry about it. I ranted at my mum yesterday about the LBC’s ridiculous reporting of that horrific tube beating. She got it and I’m happy to have peak transed another person.

The older I get the less I care about the odd rant.

LastGirlOnTheLeft · 27/06/2018 18:34

Good work Mist. I did that once with a woman worked with once. She had (she said this herself) led a very privileged life with parents who adored her and didn't believe female oppression was a thing. In my case it was a rant!😂 But she was brilliant. Really got it. She and I became great friends and now she points out to ME sexism and misogyny she sees everywhere. Not down to me...down to her!

SilverDoe · 27/06/2018 18:41

Lucky you, had the complete opposite just a couple of weekends ago with one of DHs oldest friends :(

Had a very very long argument about why his appalling views and MRA support were aggressively misogynistic and he just would not see it. He is a smart and eloquent man in his early thirties and we had up until then got on really well. He has now outed himself as a pretty hardcore MRA supporter (though he refuses to admit this) and it’s really sad, it made DH angry too.

He then messaged me a couple f days later saying that the debate had made him depressed (because I had refused to do what I had done on the previous occasion we had touched upon the subject of feminism and not backed down and explained away his utterly ridiculous views), the insinuation being it was my job to make him feel better by saying I didn’t hate him - no apology or any indicication that he though he was even slightly in the wrong though. Confused

I was actually going to post here about it asking what you would do if someone in your inner circle turned out to have scarily sexist views, but the conversation itself had drained me so much I couldn’t bring myself too!

LighthouseSouth · 27/06/2018 18:45

well done OP

hopefully he will talk about it now

NaturalBornWoman · 27/06/2018 18:52

SilverDoe I had this with someone who was quite pally with my DH. I ended up emailing him links to feminism 101 and he went ballistic. I refuse to speak to him at all now.

ToeToToe · 27/06/2018 19:06

Yeah - done that before - to one of DH's friends/colleagues. He had just announced he was "an anti-feminist" and I had had rather a lot of red wine. I'm not sure I won him over, although he did 'like' some of my FB stuff afterwards. So maybe not a total loss after all...

LastGirlOnTheLeft · 27/06/2018 19:43

Stupid, selfish men see equality as them being at a disadvantage.

kalinkafoxtrot45 · 27/06/2018 19:45

I do launch into the odd rant from time to time. Definitely opened DP’s eyes and he is now a staunch ally. Calls other men out on sexism.

UpstartCrow · 27/06/2018 22:15

SilverDoe MRA's are a kind of psychic vampire.

OMG I didn't think that so many peeps would support me. I was offline cos had to do school run and then dd had the pc . Then family time. Now I can't sleep (nowt to do with you lovely lot).
Anyways - we need to speak to our nearest and dearest. We need to speak to our friends, to the people that count to us, We need to speak up. We do count. And I am glad that women who are a lot braver than I am are willing to be in the DM.
Manfriday - 51% of the population are with you, plus the blokes who see this shit for the shit it is.

The temptation to reply with "you're unhappy because you're an arsehole" must be overwhelming.

Alexa488 · 28/06/2018 00:47

Mist please post again

MistOnTheWater · 28/06/2018 00:50

Um why? I will if I feel like it (Have absolutely no idea how to do emojis)

AngryAttackKittens when you're as old as I am the temptation to tell someone they are a an idot is rather overwhelming. (This is not at you. I like your stuff.) Loads of people are idots.

I have a lovely mental imagine of getting on a cab and the cabbie saying, "you know what the problem nowadays is, love? The bloody patriarchy. Coming over here, taking away women's rights. It's a bloody disgrace.". Grin

MistOnTheWater · 28/06/2018 01:59

Use these brackets [ ]and put the word grin or wink or cake or shock or even biscuit if you are annoyed, between them. If we bollix things up it is usually because we let a space slip in without noticing.
