Do women also have to worry when England win?

HelenaDove · 20/06/2018 01:41

Early reports say it was a woman driving the car. She was surrounded by a mob of football fans.

More details here. The first link is a film of the incident.

This summarises where the stats come from: fullfact.org/crime/world-cup-domestic-abuse/

(Short answer: yes)

Bowlofbabelfish · 20/06/2018 09:47

I’m sure I’ve seen data from Scotland that ‘your team’ winning is linked to higher DV levels than them losing.

DV levels rise dramatically around certain football fixtures

There’s been quite a lot of work done on this in Scotland in the context of DV linked to Old Firm games...

SoddingUnicorns · 20/06/2018 09:49

Absolutely. DV rates skyrocket during and after OF games.

Strathclyde police to their credit have done some good work on this.

Serfisafleur · 20/06/2018 11:00

It's the drinking.
Most incidents of DV (and other crimes) include an element of alcohol and obviously include violent males, but drink leads to more violence.

SoddingUnicorns · 20/06/2018 11:19

I didn’t miss the OF games when they weren’t happening, in fact I was glad to see the back of them! When we bought our season books this year we deliberately bought the ones which don’t include OF games as they’re an absolute disgrace to Scotland and Scottish football.

chronicallyawesome · 20/06/2018 11:47

The study that's being quoted in a few things on SM seems to be a 2014 Lancaster University one which describes a 26% rise in DV when England win and a 38% rise when they lose.
I've seen memes saying that means women want England to win which belittles the whole situation really! The problem is male violence against women, it's not football (or even alcohol) because neither of those make men be violent.

And it's poor stats - if that's the rationale we need them out ASAP as the loss is more than balanced by no more games, after the group stages. So yeah, I'd hope for that, but that fixes little in the long term. Might as well ban bank holidays, or payday. The root cause would remain unaffected.

Bowlofbabelfish · 20/06/2018 11:53

Strathclyde police I think actively contact repeat offenders around OF games to warn them not to engage in violence. It’s a good strategy and I think it might have had some effect... need to dig around a bit to find numbers.

The very fact the police take it seriously enough to contact known perps and warn them off is heartening and I would imagine gives women strength to report more.

I dont mind ppl enjoying the football and getting pissed. (im not into either) but to surround a womans car ,start rocking it then climb on the roof and jump up and down on it .....then his foot went through the back window and shattered it. i dont know whether she had kids in the back or was on an emergency errand (whether she was or not) a mob of blokes prevented her from moving + surrounded and rocked the car. And its being presented as high spirits. If it was a celeb or a Royal in the car i doubt these excuses would be used.

I think this incident is awful. If I had been driving that car alone I would have been terrified and intimidated being surrounded by that many men chanting and shouting. Whether they were chanting/shouting in good spirits or not, to surround a vehicle like that preventing the person from leaving is threatening and intimidating behaviour.

And that's entirely aside from the damage done to her car. I'm not surprised she scarpered off as soon as the fans cleared a way. I hope she wasn't too scared or shaken by the incident and I hope her insurance won't blame her in any way.

thedancingbear · 20/06/2018 15:00

I'm a man and I think people who behave like this are pricks. Actually, most of us do, in my experience. I would've found being in that car terrifying. Football seems to bring out the worst in people (and I say that as a fan).

Pleased to see the state of his ankle afterwards - I hope it fucking hurt. If there is any justice, he'll be prosecuted for criminal damage.

BlackeyedSusan · 20/06/2018 15:01

women have to worry when the internet connection goes down when their autistic child is watching the football. oh yes.

thedancingbear · 20/06/2018 15:02

soupforbrains, I think behaviour like that is ever in good spirits. It's school bully territory - intimidation for shits and giggles.

soupforbrains · 20/06/2018 15:04

@thedancingbear what I meant was that some of them would probably claim they weren't shouting AT her just singing celebratory happy songs, nothing rude or offensive so how could it be threatening/scary.

What I was saying is that it doesn't matter if they were singing happy songs or shouting angrily. it's terrifying regardless.

SleepIsForTheWeek · 20/06/2018 15:05

Would they have climbed the roof if it had been a male driver? Probably not. I would have been terrified if that had been me.

thedancingbear · 20/06/2018 15:08

Would they have climbed the roof if it had been a male driver? Probably not.

Knowing football fans as I do, almost certainly yes. I've worked in a petrol station that was systematically relieved of its stock (the shop, not the petrol pumps) by a marauding band of fans/arseholes. It was irrelevant that it was a feller behind the counter.

soupforbrains · 20/06/2018 15:13

I would agree. Most of those involved wouldn't have been able to see who the driver was so it would have happened regardless of who was driving.

HelenaDove · 20/06/2018 16:42

This is my home town It was being shared on fb last night but has now disappeared from there though the local paper and other local outlets are still carrying it.

Genuinely ashamed that video is of my home town, and yet sadly I'm not surprised.

Amiable · 20/06/2018 18:21

This has nothing to do with celebrating football and everything to do with shitty drunk herd-mentality, and being arseholes! AngryAngryAngryAngry Did you see the way that as soon as one person approached the car , a load of them did? That must have been terrifying for the driver - the guy who stood on the car should be prosecuted for criminal damage. AngryAngryAngry

Amiable · 20/06/2018 18:25

Also, really hate the way the Mirror has reported it (no surprises there) by calling him an "overzealous punter" and later talking about "not just Braintree being patriotic". HOW IS THIS PATRIOTIC BEHAVIOUR?!!!! I am really f*cking annoyed about this. ( in case you couldn't tell! )

HelenaDove · 20/06/2018 19:02

Oh im on it Amiable

OP posts:
HelenaDove · 20/06/2018 19:12

I bet it wouldnt be seen as patriotic behaviour if i was to go and damage someones car by jumping up and down on it.
