Since advertising seems to be the fulcrum of all this,

Please.

I have adblocker on but I get the Mumsnet swears by email and do buy things from that. Oh, and I would never have known about Hush or Lakeland without MN. I bought one of those heated dryers as a Christmas present (they love it!) because of MN.

MsMcWoodle · 14/06/2018 17:04

I just posted on the boycot list - the co-op are boasting about denying banking facilities to a feminist group that 'denied the rights' of transpeople. They haven't explained what this means

Help me make a list of MN’s advertisers.
AssassinatedBeauty · 14/06/2018 17:08

I'd also like to know what rights were actively being denied by a feminist group towards the transgender "community" (presumably transwomen?).

CurlsLDN · 14/06/2018 17:12

This list will be quite literally endless, as Mumsnets MPUs, leaderboards and other banners are Google ads - so Google show you what it wants to show you, there is no relationship between that brand and Mumsnet.

MN do of course work directly with advertiser's, this is more in the form of the sponsored posts, guest chats, 'mumsnet rated' badge licensing etc.

MsMcWoodle · 14/06/2018 17:15

assasinated - yeah - I'm thinking - didn't want them in the women's group. Unless they reply I think we have to assume this.

TimeLady · 14/06/2018 17:39

Lots of associated companies listed on the MN "Swears by" page

www.mumsnet.com/swearsby

Battleax · 14/06/2018 17:41

Good thinking @TimeLady

I'm in. I will NEVER use a product or service advertised on this site until we are recognised as adults and that we live in a country with free speech. I WILL NOT BE SILENCED

Battleax · 14/06/2018 20:17

Can you link to the boycott list MsMcW?

ISeeTheLight · 14/06/2018 20:22

You're going to struggle to compile a complete list. The vast majority of ads are bought programmatically, and are targeted either behaviourally (your browsing behaviour) or contextually (what's on the page). Most advertisers use blacklists (IE don't advertise on these particular sites) rather than whitelists (IE only advertise on these sites). As such there will be hundreds of advertisers buying and impressions on Mumsnet. Most won't even know they're advertising on Mumsnet, campaigns are usually run through media agencies or trading desks who don't report on sitelists (which websites your ads have appeared on).
FYI Google doesn't have a monopoly on this, there are lots of other and networks and DSPs (demand side platforms - the system you use to set up campaigns).

Barbie x misguided

NotTerfNorCis · 14/06/2018 22:36

There was an annoying Plan advert once. Annoying because it started playing audio whenever I refreshed the page (which was a lot).

Really pissed me off, and the ironic thing was I already donate to Plan.

Polynerd · 14/06/2018 23:37

Can you give us more info about the co-op thing @msmcwoodle?

LadyLance · 14/06/2018 23:43

@ISeeTheLight That's sort of what I was trying to say but a) I think you understand it better than me, and b) I wasn't very coherent earlier.

Unless we can find out the specific advertisers that have put pressure on mumsnet (which would be unlikely) a boycott would be very hard.

If you put an addblocker on, and tell mumsnet why you are doing it, then that's about as close as you can get to a boycott.

FWIW based on that co-op screenshot I'd definitely consider boycotting them, too.

glenthebattleostrich · 15/06/2018 06:48

They have worked with birds eye.

It might be worth having a look at the competition and sponsored discussion threads

MsMcWoodle · 15/06/2018 11:11

Polynerd That's about all I know really. Just saw it on Twitter. So far they have refused to give more information.

SaltyPeanut · 15/06/2018 13:00

I wonder...who make up the group that would provide the biggest number of lost sales due to a boycott because, by pure percentages, it sure as shit is not trans people.

I assume companies want to sell as much product as possible so who is it at these companies that thinks it a fabulous idea (is too scared not to) to back the trans agenda at the risk of alienating the females who even in 2018 make most shopping decisions when it come to frequently replaced consumables.

It's ridiculous in business terms to pander to the smallest minority.

I'm going to look into an ad blocker, just for use on Mumsnet. I've never used one before as I've always held the belief that, annoying as ads are, web site publishers who don't throw up a pay wall deserve an income any way they can get it but I'll make an exception this once.

Jux · 19/06/2018 20:59

So, I took my adblocker off as a gesture of thanks to MN and the main advertisers because they had stood firm on our behalf. And now MN hasn't.

Does this mean I can turn my advlocker back on? You

BertieBotts · 19/06/2018 21:05

Any of the ads which have a light blue triangle logo in the corner are being run by Adchoices which is a third party company providing advertising.

The ads without the blue triangle are direct clients of MNHQ.

So there is no use targeting any of the Adchoice ones but the direct ones, possibly.

I've had to use adblock for years now because of Adchoices. If I could have screened just those out, I would have done. They are awful, often badly coded (I get anything between about 15 and 75 ads blocked when I load a MN page! That's not normal.)

BertieBotts · 19/06/2018 21:08

Swears By is not paid advertising, they've always been pretty clear about that, they only use products which are discussed in the forums and companies can't pay to get their product featured in there.
