I would love to know what human right they are referring to.

My letter below - will post any replies

Dear Coop Bank -

I am writing to make a formal complaint about your recent decision described in the attachment.

I would like to understand what made you decline banking services to a feminist group and what rights were denied to the transgender community.

In addition - what was the charity "linked to an organisation classified as a cult outside the UK"?

Finally - are you aware that you are probably contravening the 2010 Equality Act by discriminating against the protected group of women?

I will have no hesitation in closing my personal, business and mortgage accounts with the Coop if I find you have been trying to close down and debate of the complex issues surrounding transgenderism or have been discriminating against women.

Regards

I've banked with them for about a quarter of a century.

Discussing with DH where we might move our money tomorrow. He's not keen on moving as the others are all far worse.

He's right about that, they are. Coop have got this wrong, along with other things (I must have been doing a 'lalala can't hear you' to miss the stuff about the last bloke in charge Shock) but at least they give it some thought.

Does anybody know of any other ethical and viable banking alternatives?

I don't think DH has fully appreciated the insidious yet immediate nature of the lefty dudebro threat.

I have no idea whether Hands Across the Aisle are the organisation that were refused but this quote on their site from Natacha Chart seems relevant here:

On the subject of whether a woman is an adult human female, feminists have been made thoroughly unwelcome on the left. So if liberals think it’s very strange for feminists to work with conservatives, they should probably stop telling us to “drink bleach” or looking the other way as online mobs demand that we be fired.

I have been looking for an address at the Co-op Bank to write to about this. The head office is he Co-operative Bank p.l.c., P.O. Box 101, 1 Balloon Street, Manchester M60 4EP.

It’s owned by hedge funds now anyway and they only have an “ethical policy” (which is extremely general) because they know that’s why most of their customers stay with them. If they think they are losing business because of the way they are applying it they probably won’t be happy.

I complained at my branch and got a reply saying that the org concerned 'advocates discrimination and incitement to hatred.... and that it had not responded to Co-op bank's invittion to clarify its position on how it complies with the UK Equality Act.
It declined to provide specifics about the case. I've gone to First Direct and am in the process of closing my Co-op a/c and moving my savings.

LemonJello · 09/09/2018 21:20

It’s weird we don’t know who the group is. If it was any of the feminist groups active right now, would they not come out and say, and protest these allegations?

speakingwoman · 09/09/2018 22:33

Placemarking

theOtherPamAyres · 09/09/2018 22:40

Perhaps some MNs from the USA can tell us more about this feminist group?

BabySharkDoododoo · 09/09/2018 23:48

Tickled me a bit that directly after accusing some feminist group of denying trans people rights (which I don't believe..I'm betting its a group who are against the GRA proposals..so its classed as denying trans peoples rights to self identify Hmm ) they go on about some group thats a cult. Transgenderism as it stands today is rather like a cult.

In short, I claim more virtue signalling bollocks. I would be very shocked if any feminist group actually did want to deny trans people human rights, thats ridiculous.

Just waiting for the bank to call me back about this.

I’ve banked with them for 30 years, and am actively looking for somewhere to invest a large inheritance coming my way in November.

So pleased I found this thread - I will have it open when I speak to them. If they aren’t able to adequately explain themselves, that’s me lost as a customer.

VeryBerrySeptember · 11/09/2018 12:57

Unlike a previous poster I would not trust the board of the co-op bank.

Have you read anything of their recent track record?!

newtlover · 11/09/2018 13:26

marking my place as am also a customer

YetAnotherSpartacus · 11/09/2018 13:34

I'd like to know who the group is... until someone comes forward I'm filing this under 'fishy'.

YetAnotherSpartacus · 11/09/2018 13:35

Hang on - is this old news?

YetAnotherSpartacus · 11/09/2018 13:37

Nope, just an old thread. I'll catch up eventually.

EsmesRedPetticoat · 11/09/2018 13:49

Watching with interest. I bank with Smile and DP works for the bank.

speakingwoman · 11/09/2018 14:28

The bank's position appears to be that it asked questions which weren't answered.

I wonder what prompted the questions. Has anyone ever opened a business/charity account with coop?

SuburbanRhonda · 15/09/2018 08:57

I contacted the Co-op bank and they agreed to get someone to call me back before 12 last Thursday.

No-one called, so I contacted them to say I’m switching to another bank. They were apologetic about no-one getting back to me but didn’t seem too concerned about losing a customer of 30 years.

On the plus side, DS has done “recommend a friend” with his bank (Nationwide) and we both get £100!
