Open letter to advertisers on mumsnet

Ucantarguewistupid · 14/06/2018 11:17

To all who advertise on here

I am a female, born as such and with the chromosomes that identify me as female.

I am horrified that mumsnet has caved in to a vocal minority and has effectively banned free speech that is factually correct. I accept people should not be abusive to one another but to insist that correct terms used in constructive and educational debate should not be used is an attack on freedom of speech.

As mumsnet have caved in to this abusive minority - a minority who often try to use intimidation to prevent women from gathering to discuss issues that affect women, I will have to reconsider my presence on mumsnet. Should I choose to withdraw from visiting the site you will have lost a potential consumer and will certainly have lost an audience member. I am also going to go one step further should I withdraw (or be banned) from mumsnet - I will make a list of all advertisers and will actively boycott your products and encourage all I know to do the same.

Oppression of females must not be tolerated. We must be allowed to speak freely, to feel safe, to have safe spaces, to be free from violence both verbal and physical, to have equality, to be allowed our identity, to be listened to. In short, we must not be oppressed.

There are women who support those who are trying to erode women's freedom of speech and identity - this does not make them right. Women opposed women getting the vote and equality. The majority of women who did want the right to vote and equality eventually made enough noise that they were listened to. At the moment a vocal minority have mumsnet and others in their thrall. The majority of which I am a part are starting to wake up. I urge you to not give in to a minority intent on distorting truths and subjugating women.

OP posts:
WichBitchHarpyTerfThatsMe · 14/06/2018 15:46

Totally agree OP.

I already boycott M&S and Top Shop, I'm middle aged with a teenage daughter and financially well off. That'a a lot of cardigans and cropped tops not being purchased.

I too book the holidays, buy the furniture and furnishings, do the food/cleaning products shopping, chose the electrical appliances etc etc.

Giddy do you really think the 0.5% can keep these major companies going if a significant number of women boycott them? Really?

Ironically the gender prejudice that leaves a lot of women holding the family purse strings (because men can't be arsed with the hassle, boredom and responsibility of it) for once works in our favour here.

womanformallyknownaswoman · 14/06/2018 15:46

who will bring them more income - 51% or 0.6% - do the maths Pinko

Writersblock2 · 14/06/2018 15:48

This! And I like to shop...

Picassospaintbrush · 14/06/2018 15:48

Gibberty

Your post is pure invention and wishful thinking. You really are barking up the wrong tree here.

LunaTrap · 14/06/2018 15:50

Yeah I'm sure India Willoughby feared getting typed to death by some feminists on MN discussing biology.

HotRocker · 14/06/2018 15:51

100% with you OP.
I will not spend my money with any company who advocates the suppression of free speech or the oppression of women, and I will tell every single person I know and plenty that I don’t.
Women do not like to be silenced, and when this all comes out in the wash you and MN will be exposed, and a small group of radicalised misogynists will not be able to bail you out. Think on.

WichBitchHarpyTerfThatsMe · 14/06/2018 15:51

Oh, forgot, I also choose the car, house and pet insurance and the gas, electric, phone, internet providers.

NaturalBlondeYeahRight · 14/06/2018 15:55

Roll call here too. Mumsnet is a never ending source of purchasing for me- I must be a sucker. Let’s hope advertisers are not suckers for listening to such a tiny (and poor if all the PayPal begging is anything to go by) percentage of the population.

Should1stayorshould1go · 14/06/2018 15:58

hear hear

HotRocker · 14/06/2018 15:59

And, I’m a single parent, so everything I buy from the washing up liquid to the tumble dryer to the house insurance and back again is decided on by me.

PennyLaneIsInMyHeart · 14/06/2018 16:00

Yes, totally agree

Slapbetcommissioner · 14/06/2018 16:03

I agree with everything you've said OP

I'm a man and I agree with everything you've said.

Strigiformes · 14/06/2018 16:07

I agree op.

RubyShooFan · 14/06/2018 17:19

I’m with you. I’m already boycotting Topshop, M&S, Primark and Lush over this reality and biology denying shitshow! I love to shop, I’ve never gone so long without new clothes and I’ve never had such a healthy savings account!

I make the purchasing decisions for a large family with an above average income. Our money will not be going to support any company that doesn’t support freedom of speech, safeguarding of children and women’s rights.

I’ve just put my weekly shop away, I noticed all my BIRDS EYE stuff was stamped ‘mumsnet approved’ I’m no longer viewing this as a plus point.

ImagineBeing · 14/06/2018 17:27

Hear, hear.

I will not be forced to lie.

I have seen the Twitter account referred to above. The person who used self-ID to identify as a woman, admitted to bullying a venue into csncelling a feminist meeting. They described how they put on different voices (I understand the NHS provides acting voice lessons to aid this, via speech therapy) and used various different phones, so it appeared more people were complaining about the meeting, than actually were.

ToeToToe · 14/06/2018 17:28

I'm with you OP.

I have bought loads of stuff on the say-so of mumsnetters.

I have a family of five and I do the shopping. We would count as a well off family.

I spend £100s per month in the supermarket (one of the ones listed as advertising with MN).

I buy all mine and my children's clothes, and some of my DHs.

I organise all the insurance.

We have pets.

My kids eat Birds Eye fishfingers. For now.

#Women and Girls Matter.

Clarabumps · 14/06/2018 17:45

I agree

TimeLady · 14/06/2018 17:47

I volunteer in a charity shop and you might be amazed at the good quality branded stuff that goes out the rails if you don't use them already. It's the ultimate recycling, so a good environmentally friendly alternative if you're having withdrawal symptoms Grin

We all have far too much 'stuff' these days anyway....

GaveAUsUniformsCreatedAnArmy · 14/06/2018 17:48

We all have far too much 'stuff' these days anyway....

Small donations to small local charities and projects.

Prawnofthepatriarchy · 14/06/2018 17:50

Hear, hear!

Roomba · 14/06/2018 17:52

Add me to the list of consumers who will boycott, too. I am the sole shopper in my household and often take note of what is recommended on MN when deciding where to spend our money. It would be a shame if a tiny group of angry misogynists lost advertisers a lot of money.

placemats · 14/06/2018 18:10

I have decided to boycott as well. Glad this thread is up.

I have the biggest purchasing power in this household.

I shall not be silenced. My money counts.

RaininSummer · 14/06/2018 18:12

Hear hear. Is there a master list of who to boycott ? We need advertisers and firms who do the TWAW thing.
