David Aaronovitch in today's Times about free speech and the GRA:

www.thetimes.co.uk/article/assaults-on-free-speech-are-led-by-the-left-l2r8t9t9p?shareToken=d99c908ebaf10ccf760a000cb98a2bd1

Thank you for this, David.

StealthNinjaMum · 14/06/2018 12:58

I spotted this article as Caitlin Moran has retweeted it and called it a 'brilliant column;. She has nearly 800k followers.

LittleLebowski · 14/06/2018 13:51

That's good re Caitlin Moran - I don't think she's only skirted around this before? I have seen Gia Milinovitch post some GC stuff too - , but then you'd expect the person married to Prof Brian Cox to be up on their basic biology understanding. David Aaronovitch interacts a great deal with people who comment on his articles/Twitter. At last, maybe openly questioning the wisdom of Self-ID won't be seen as so verboten.

IndominusRex · 14/06/2018 15:08

I'm surprised about CM. She hasn't been gender critical in the past and is also pro porn.

R0wantrees · 14/06/2018 15:15

I think there may be increasing numbers of public figures commenting.

BoreOfWhabylon · 14/06/2018 15:34

YY, R0wan. And I think that's in no small part due to Mumsnet.

TimeLady · 14/06/2018 18:05

Trust me, David Aaronovitch is NOT right wing. He had communist links in the past.

terryleather · 14/06/2018 18:20

I seem to remember Brian Cox got pelters a few years ago on Twitter for being married to the terfy Gia Milinovich and obviously being tainted by association.

I'd be pleasantly surprised if CM is gender critical as she's always struck me as a libfem through and through.

CertainHalfDesertedStreets · 14/06/2018 18:23

Welcome Caitlin.

Starting to look like little OJ is just going to have his cat for company at the Guardianista Xmas knees up...

terryleather · 14/06/2018 18:27

That'll be ok though Certain as LOJ has just been given a make over by the Guardian style team so at least he'll be looking good while he strokes his pussy...Grin

pachyderm · 14/06/2018 18:29

David Aaranovitch has been onto this for quite a while on Twitter, I have a lot of respect for him. He's too clever to be blinded by bullshit, or succumb to groupthink.

I must say, this whole issue has been very revealing when it comes to public figures and their critical faculties. Surprised to see CM retweeting it, she's usually such a wishy washy libfem.

nauticant · 14/06/2018 18:54

There's a very good subscription offer for The Times and The Sunday Times digital editions at the moment:

www.thetimes.co.uk/subscribe/

£3 for 3 months. I've signed up just to read Janice Turner's work.

placemats · 14/06/2018 19:08

Well I'm certainly not going to criticise Caitlin Moran for her views in the past, unlike a certain group of people who seem to bleat on about what so and so said once 15 years ago.

I've decided on these articles to join The Times.

I have always liked Aaronovitch in The Guardian.

placemats · 14/06/2018 19:11

Oh and Gia Milinovich is considered persona non gratis within certain circles and her husband supports her 100%.

LighthouseSouth · 14/06/2018 19:51

I like the article and I'm glad he defended Lionel Shriver - I thought she got given a ridiculously hard time, I've spent my whole career wondering if I got certain jobs because I ticked the non-white woman box - but that aside....the comments aren't really focusing on the issue, which is a shame.

interesting about women athletes pre 1960s tests, that was news to me.

Bowlofbabelfish · 14/06/2018 20:03

DA implies that the GRA would give transwomen the legal right to complete in women's sports. This is a load of bollocks.

An ironic turn of phrase. But it is happening. Already. In the real world. There’s a thread on female athletes being denied first and second in Connecticut on here. There was a thread the other week where a military ladies rugby team member described the potentially life and career altering injuries her team mates received when playing against a team with a single transwoman : shattered collarbone, burst knee joint. Five players seriously injured in all.
Hannah mouncey. An NZ weightlifter. Gallon fox

It is happening and women are going to be seriously injured because of it. Women will be denied US based uni scholarships because of it. Women will see no point in competing because of it.

Bowlofbabelfish · 14/06/2018 20:04

An excellent article, and the comments under give me hope for humanity.

I think I may get myself a times subscription...

CertainHalfDesertedStreets · 14/06/2018 20:22

so at least he'll be looking good while he strokes his pussy... GrinGrin

I've spent my whole career wondering if I got certain jobs because I ticked the non-white woman box almost certainly the other way round so I would stop wondering now Smile

gendercritter · 14/06/2018 20:33

Brilliant to see CM share it.

Mslexia is an interesting one. Putting aside the Shriver issue, I've been watching them for some time to see whether they'll start treating TW as women. They seem to care about carving space for female writers and they've helped a lot of people forge writing careers.

At some point the trans issue is going to come up for them (although I might have missed that it already has for them). I don't necessarily think ditching Shriver was the wrong thing to do in this instance but one the commemts Shriver made involved a trans woman and Mslexia's statement was about about being more inclusive to lgbt writers. So maybe that's a sign of what's ahead. I'm hoping 'lgbt' in this context means lesbian! I am nervous it doesn't though.

LighthouseSouth · 14/06/2018 20:47

who is CM please?

I hadn't thought of how MsLexia would see the trans issues. That's going to be interesting. I stopped subscribing years ago but I cling to hope that they are ....on the side of women.

LighthouseSouth · 14/06/2018 20:49

oh sorry, just saw, Caitlin Moran.

NotTerfNorCis · 15/06/2018 08:58

Good article. But there have been many good articles in the past. Shame people only listen when it's a man speaking.

Prawnofthepatriarchy · 15/06/2018 15:29

My comment under that article is up near the top of Most Recommended. Whoo hoo! Feeling good Grin
