Good, what do you and GG think about the South African beer company that describes women as www.timeslive.co.za/news/south-africa/2018-06-08-joburg-craft-beer-company-apologises-for-sexists-ads/

NoseringGirl · 09/06/2018 16:26

Thanks for the heads up, I didn't know this was on! Will set the box to record Smile

NotTerfNorCis · 09/06/2018 20:35

Heh, just bought The Female Eunuch today.

bottleofredplease · 09/06/2018 21:04

Watching

WiltedDaffs · 09/06/2018 21:07

Me too.

DrDreReturns · 09/06/2018 21:50

Ditto

MyNameIsNotSteven · 09/06/2018 21:57

I think she takes the view that she's seen it all before (done better) and it hasn't actually changed anything ('it's all bollocks')

bringbacksideburns · 09/06/2018 22:07

Really enjoyed it. Thanks for the reminder.

Think I might get her book The Change and see what she has to say about the Menopause.

But the #Metoo comment about just hitting any man who put his hand up her skirt - she doesn't get that her confidence, her privilege and her fiestiness isn't a given with everyone.

2rebecca · 09/06/2018 22:10

Weird I was sure I posted on a thread on this earlier. She is wonderful but seems very pessimistic about feminism and women's abilities to say no to men

KateSheppard · 09/06/2018 22:12

I admire her abashed honesty and determination not to accept our society's female directed toxic shame. She really doesn't give a shit, in the best way.

What struck me the most about the documentary is how little has changed in the social position of women in over the course of 50 years.

There are some troubling similarities between the current idealised image of the good wife and mother and the gold standard of domesticity in the 1950s.

We've gone full circle.

NotTerfNorCis · 09/06/2018 22:12

This follow-up programme about women on TV is angering up my blood.

BoiledFrog · 09/06/2018 22:13

I really enjoyed that, I don't think she is a pessimist, just a realist. This is sometimes missing in feminism to my mind.

KateSheppard · 09/06/2018 22:13

*unabashed. Obviously. Grin

thebewilderness · 09/06/2018 22:23

What struck me the most about the documentary is how little has changed in the social position of women in over the course of 50 years.

For me at the age of 72 it appears to have been three steps forward in the late sixties seventies and early eighties followed by two steps back starting in the late eighties backlash till now.

speakingwoman · 09/06/2018 22:25

Wow. She was awesome.

“She really doesn't give a shit, in the best way”.
Yes, and to my mind that’s the most anti-feminist thing in my life:the constant internalised pressure I feel to be nice/liked.

LassWiADelicateAir · 09/06/2018 22:26

That was very interesting. I have never read any Germaine Greer but I enjoyed that.

MyNameIsNotSteven · 09/06/2018 22:30

This follow-up programme about women on TV is angering up my blood.

Mine too. It's a good watch though.

speakingwoman · 09/06/2018 22:31

I read my mum’s copy when I was 13. Way too young!

Anyone fancy joining me for a (re) read?

hungryhippie · 09/06/2018 22:35

The female Eunuch is fantastic. It was the first feminist book I ever read.
I dont have my old copy any more but im tempted to get it again, and the book on the menopause.

DH looked v interested whenGG was talking about how to stay penetrate....

speakingwoman · 09/06/2018 22:40

Penetrable.

Apple doesn’t like the word...

MyNameIsNotSteven · 09/06/2018 22:41

Did anyone else howl at the photoshop makeover on the programme after?

ClickHip · 09/06/2018 22:46

I really enjoyed to programme. Brilliant Photoshop makeover...bit concerned about the menopause now...unpenetrable???

speakingwoman · 09/06/2018 22:52

It’s amazing how much of the footage is from my lifetime....
Makes me realise how poor the available role models were.
The girls in the 1930s books I read were better.....

bringbacksideburns · 09/06/2018 23:00

I agree with what she said about it being worse in some ways today.

We can get a mortgage but we have to put up with ( well I don't but my 15 year old daughter does) endless shitty social media, Instagram influencers and probably more pressure to have a certain lifestyle than ever.
