Love Jeanette Winterson, will definitely give it a listen

Melamin · 06/06/2018 08:56

I thought she was good on Today - she went through from the start of the campaign of the suffragettes in 1864 (ish - sorry not good at remembering numbers) and the long wait they had to get the vote, Winston Churchill's response about 'militant women', how getting the vote was only part of it, and the rights that we take for granted that have only been recently acquired with equal pay act etc (and that Cambridge did not award degrees to women until 1948 Shock )

I heard her interview too and liked her point about how Churchill said he wouldn't support giving women the vote while they engaged in militant action and at the same time sent millions of young men off to fight in a war!

I also liked her point about positive discrimination.

Definitely worth a listen!

Thanks for the link!

It is a shame they put these things on so late. I am going to have to listen again in the morning, but looking forward to comments.

Thanks, I'll definitely watch, i have a lot of time for Jeanette.

Melamin · 06/06/2018 21:56

Bump for the late shift.

unfortunately I can't listen/view from Ireland. Could someone please give an idea of her thoughts on positive discrimination? Ta very.

RhinestoneCowgirl · 06/06/2018 22:36

She said she was in favour of positive discrimination

RhinestoneCowgirl · 06/06/2018 22:37

On the grounds that men have been benefiting from positive discrimination for years...

AllTheDressesInAllTheSizes · 06/06/2018 22:44

Churchill is a very interesting study in hypocrisy and warped privilege, I think, if you look at his WW1 and General Strike years rather than just WW2. I'll be watching this.

BingBongSong · 06/06/2018 22:51

Watching now!

AbsintheFriends · 06/06/2018 23:05

I didn't intend to watch this because I'm knackered, but I can't switch off. So good. And she's just spelled out the difference between sex and gender, and exposed the nonsense of the gendered brain theory. People in the audience nodding in agreement.

Pratchet · 06/06/2018 23:08

Oh more please!

AbsintheFriends · 06/06/2018 23:12

It's wonderful stuff. Essential listening, when you have a chance.

Alienspaceship · 06/06/2018 23:14

Fantastic stuff

AbsintheFriends · 06/06/2018 23:14

I've also just noticed that she's talking apparently without notes or an autocue (as far as I can tell) She's brilliant.

AllTheDressesInAllTheSizes · 06/06/2018 23:16

Brilliant.

She's really drilling down into the biology of it.

BingBongSong · 06/06/2018 23:20

I'm enjoying this very much. She packs in so much content! So many great quotes. I like:

"Behind every great woman is a man who tried to stop her"

and

"Women do the invisible mending that hold a family together"

... there are too many to mention.

Mumtothenipper · 06/06/2018 23:21

This is enthralling. I was about to turn the tv off but can't stop watching.

Choccywoccyhooha · 06/06/2018 23:23

She's a wonderful writer and orator. I hadn't realised that women couldn't take out credit until 1975.
She has covered so much so far: the need for girls to be educated, porn, the need for parity in parliament, the different experience of working class v middle class women, the ridiculousness of so many of the excuses used by men to undermine women in the work place, #metoo, respect, what women can bring to board meetings, how society views menopausal women, the digital revolution... So much.

Sabistick · 06/06/2018 23:29

Does anyone know who the audience member with red hair is? The camera keeps going back to her.

SonicVersusGynaephobia · 06/06/2018 23:29

Oh my god, this is AMAZING.

Best thing I have ever seen.

Fucking hell. Incredible. I am now Jeanette Winterson's biggest fan.

Mossandclover · 06/06/2018 23:31

Wow. How did she do that with no visible prompts and so accurately to time?

Much more substance than other ‘celebration of women’

AbsintheFriends · 06/06/2018 23:32

Well, if I'm ever on Desert Island Discs I'm taking a recording of that. And if I'm not, I'm hoping I can download it and keep it for future listening.

Glorious.

Melamin · 06/06/2018 23:32

Well that was well worth staying up for🙂
I will listen again in the morning too.
