So when did the meaning of 'gender' change?

From the Pocket OED 1942

It is important to understand this when discussing trans issues because the term "gender identity" for example is a bit of a misnomer and the actual meaning is closer to "sex identity".

You just said "gender" was a synonym for sex. Make your mind up. There is no "sex identity". A male can have no way of knowing that he feels like a female feels when all he is going on is his own perception. He has no first hand experience.

Actually I partially agree with Wakame. I think that the truly gender dysphoric might be better named as sex dysphoric, as it seems to be a type of body dysmorphia where the sufferer has issues with their physical body?

Might be better to stick with transexual as well as transgender too, as they seem to be different things?

Please don't turn this into an angry thread about what trans-whatever is or is not. It's a thread about the meanings of words. (Perhaps I should have posted it in Pedants' Corner!)
