Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

Venice's interview with Geordie transwomen "Now that's what I call a talk show"

This was a brilliant interview, anyone who hasn't seen it should have a look.

Jossy and Fay agreed with Venice on a lot of points, and disagreements were nothing but civil. This is what the complete opposite of #nodebate looks like :)

Enjoy!

Thanks for sharing this. It was as you say interesting and civil.

Ekphrasis · 01/06/2018 10:32

Thanks half way through.

Well of course the Geordies are sensible!

Agreement that a 'dick is what a man has' (I'm quoting the trans women here.)

I can see though that when they talk (only one really talks!) there's a little confusion over the difference between sex and gender plus I can't help feeling that for one TW it was potentially unconscious homophobia around them that led them to transition? However, they seem very clear that they are tw and not w.

I want to hear more about what the TW in the white top thinks though!

Melamin · 01/06/2018 10:39

I watched last night and enjoyed it. Don’t agree with everything but that is to be expected. They all seemed to have fun making the video and it would be interesting to see what the tw in the white top would say 😉

Ekphrasis · 01/06/2018 10:45

Gosh good points made regarding the child at a trans meeting from which one of the TW was then thrown out of (and poultice called!)

Excellent discussion around non binary too.

R0wantrees · 01/06/2018 11:05

I thought it was interesting that both trans women spoke of their frustrations with those TRAs who have so much presence (media/politically?).

Like Rose of Dawn, they've said that they disagree with a great deal and want to have their views better represented.

Rose's videos are worth watching:

Interesting video plenty of common ground if only we were allowed to find it. I might have a quick look at the comments to see what kind of reception it’s had. Wish me luck.

BeyondSceptical · 01/06/2018 12:53

The comments aren't too bad either. Mostly

Obviously we're never going to agree on everything, but people like the Geordies in this video any of us could sit down for a drink and a conversation with, which is a massive improvement over what happens when we try to talk to TRAs. Total agreement isn't a realistic goal, discussion should be.

PlectrumElectrum · 01/06/2018 20:32

Jeez, who knew people could still, you know, talk & disagree without anyone succumbing to any harm whatsoever. Well done to all who were involved. @DrRadFem you are an absolute Star

AngryAttackKittens · 01/06/2018 20:36

They're still really not getting the reasons women find male looking people in women's spaces alarming though, or if they do they think that's less important than their own needs, and I don't know that there's any way of getting around that no matter how much discussion we have, because it's one of those issues where everyone can't get what they want.

When putting 50% of the population and what they want up against less than 1% of the population and what they want I think it's pretty clear which group should have to make concessions, and it's not the one that has uteri.

MaisyPops · 01/06/2018 20:47

Really thoughtful and just shows how there will be many transwomen and transmen who are like those Geordies and nothing like the radical TRA lobby.

I loved the part where the transwomen were very clear that some issues only affect those born in the female sex and that's fine. I also loved that they were clear about the fact that biological women's voices should be heard.

ToeToToe · 01/06/2018 20:49

It was great to watch. Venice is much maligned, it was clear they were expecting some sort of monster the way they were talking.

It was a good, respectful discussion, and it gives me hope of some sort of resolution.

AngryAttackKittens · 01/06/2018 20:51

It's hilarious how little it takes for women to be framed as terrifying monsters. How can anyone claim with a straight face to be scared of Venice? You can see how hard she's trying to find common ground and avoid hurting feelings while still being honest. The female socialization is obvious, as is the fact that she's a kind person.

BeyondSceptical · 01/06/2018 21:09

Indeed, angry.

The one on the left who didn't speak much (one on right must have said about 75% of the words between all 3 of them!)... he seemed more sympathetic starting with "I think biology matters and transwomen are transwomen", seemed very concerned by the TRA lot and I would have liked to heared more from that person.

Venice was great. Lots of comments about her pout lol. No comments particularly harsh or aggressive.

More of this sort of thing I hope.

drradfem · 01/06/2018 21:41

Ahh thanks for the good feedback. Next time I do one of these things I'm going to cover the video of myself to avoid the pouting and hair fiddling 🤣🤣🤣

Ereshkigal · 01/06/2018 21:44

Well done Venice!

ToeToToe · 01/06/2018 21:49

Your hair looked fab Venice!

BeyondSceptical · 01/06/2018 22:02

Ah, hello Venice! Yes, very well done to you Wine

This interview was the little ray of sunshine in a shit few days - I needed something a bit more positive. Brava!

This! This is a conversation. Between people, not tweeting limited characters at each other. Not seeking soundbites in the press.

Venice - you're doing amazing, don't worry about the hair-fiddling, you're out there talking the things that so many of us would like to say but can't in the public arena right now.

All three people (quiet one in the white t-shirt too!) - thank you for having a conversation, and letting us hear it.

I noted that the Talk Show were told by others 'don't do this, she's a monster (Venice)'. (Venice - grrr, which monster would you like to self-identify as?!)

I think those people objecting were more worried at you (Talk Show hosts) both expressing your views would show the nuanced conversation you were likely to have, and show up the activists trying to shut down the debate and silence your viewpoints.

Talk Show hosts - you were the people I thought I was an ally to, until the strange and nebulous trans-lobby took hold. I'd still be an ally - it'll always be complicated when it touches women's and girl's rights, but hearing people like you makes me remember why I was originally.

This is so worth a watch.

BeyondSceptical · 01/06/2018 22:22

Yes Pom, fabulous post 👍

Jossy and Fay Wine Wine for you two, too.

pombear · 01/06/2018 22:30

Jossy and Fay - sorry, forgot to use your names, I'm still watching right now and wanted to give you all a shout out, forgot to check your names! All three of you are having a respectful, interesting and wide-ranging conversation.

Jossy and Fay - thank you for having Venice on, despite the negativity it sounds like you experienced for doing so. Likewise Venice for keeping on speaking out.

There is some very concerning aggression out there right now around all of this and anyone who is prepared to raise their head above the parapet and have a proper conversation about this is to be admired.

I couldn't list all the people here who are starting to do this right now, as the list grows each day, but thank you to you all.
