Has anyone else heard of this group? Looks really promising.

wedontbuyit.eu/

Set up by a man whose wife was murdered by a man who had violently raped prostitutes in the past.

"Two years ago I read this document from an interview with a man who had repeatedly and very violently raped a number of prostitutes in Australia. His answer to the question, ‘Why did you do this?’ was ‘I paid for her, I can do what I want with her.’
Ten years later that man was out on parole and raped and murdered my wife."

The group is set up to show that the vast majority of men don't use prostitutes and know that women are human beings who cannot be bought. That the narrative pushed by brothel owners and johns does not reflect reality and is damaging to women.

Article about it in the local press at the time:

The exact opposite of Amnesty International's view on this issue

Tinkletinklelittlebat · 21/05/2018 09:49

Good for him!

deydododatdodontdeydo · 21/05/2018 09:50

Interesting group, and good to see some men are taking responsibility.
I wonder if there is a similar UK group.
I hope it gains traction.

ElenOfTheWays · 21/05/2018 10:08

Yes. More of this type of thing.

Waddlelikeapenguin · 21/05/2018 10:28

Good luck to him Smile

WhatTheWaterShowedMe · 21/05/2018 10:59

Excellent. We need more men to publicly take this position and campaign for women’s rights not to be bought and sold.

Published govt. report, 'Prostitution and the Global Sex Trade' is discussed in today's Independent:
"Sex trafficking is taking place on an “industrial scale” across England and Wales as the government’s strategy for tackling the issue fails to deliver, new research claims

MPs called for the criminalisation of paying for sex after research found so-called “pop-up brothels” – premises rented for short periods of time to sexually exploit women – were widespread, with hundreds of vulnerable women, predominantly from Eastern Europe, being supplied by trafficking gangs into residential properties in order to be sexually exploited by British men.

The inquiry by the All-Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) on Prostitution and the Global Sex Trade found the practice was being enabled by “prostitution procurement websites” such as Adultwork, and driven by a minority of UK men who pay for sex." (continues)

Good for him.

Thanks Rowantrees

That story just had a mention on the news headlines on BBC Radio 4

Glad it’s being discussed in a sane way and becoming a mainstream issue

Jill Meagher's husband has spoken out quite a bit.

I just find it sad, that men like this, don't do it before another woman is dead. Why is it always left up to feminists?

There is worse from AU, the dude who killed a 17yo girl, for no reason at all, had a history of raping prostituted women.

They just keep letting these bastards out, to keep killing/raping women.

The Govt. report discussed in The Independent highlights the role that the internet is playing in trafficking women.

"We are clear that the internet must not be viewed as a safe space for these despicable individuals to traffic human beings. The NCA, supported by Government, has increased operational activity against key modern slavery threats, including employing new techniques to identify and disrupt offenders operating online"

Recent article by Jessica Eaton, Doctoral Researcher in Forensic Psychology about the impact of language about sex / porn :

"When I started to search the terms I had heard and read, I easily found memes, articles, discussions and blogs using this language about women in a completely normalised way. Men saying to their friends ‘The girl next door, I would ruin that!’ or ‘She’s gonna get it hard. Beat that pussy up!’ "
She goes on to discuss the work needed with young people.

thread discussing this www.mumsnet.com/Talk/womens_rights/3253264-Very-good-article-by-Jessica-Eaton-about-language-used-to-describe-sex

Which seems especially urgent in light of the findings of the Govt. report on sexual harassment and assaults of girls in schools:
publications.parliament.uk/pa/cm201617/cmselect/cmwomeq/91/91.pdf

Other areas of focus with regards online influence.

BBC Trending are investigating the role of the internet and Incel online groups:
www.bbc.co.uk/news/blogs-trending-44053828?ocid=socialflow_twitter

Catherine Bennett's recent piece:
www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2018/apr/29/violent-misogyny-not-confined-to-internet-incels

It seems to me there is an urgent need for a joined-up investigation of the dangers of toxicity of misogyny and the internet for girls and women.

Surely, these are serious issues which need to be seen in their relation to each other?

TerfsUp · 21/05/2018 18:47

My condolences to the man whose wife was raped and murdered. I am glad that he is doing something about this terrible crime.

LassWiADelicateAir · 21/05/2018 19:07

An excellent initiative which deserves support.

Badgerthebodger · 21/05/2018 19:45

I think that’s a great idea. I’m sorry for him and for his poor wife, horrible that offenders are released all the time and so many go on to re-offend. I know it’s a problem with all crimes from burglary to murder but it does seem that those men who commit rape, sexual violence and murder women are more likely to carry out the same or worse crime. Just anecdotal, from reading lots of things like this.

More power to him though for channelling it into something positive. My cousin works with survivors of modern slavery and so many of these women are trapped into prostitution. They’re often left with nothing but an immigration case, to fight with no knowledge, no energy, nothing.

I really hope this man’s group gains traction, wouldn’t it be brilliant if you could somehow get a badge for Tinder or something. Too wide open to abuse I know but imagine if it really did become something which other men wouldn’t accept. No more stag dos to Eastern Europe, no more jokes about paying for sex.

QuarksandLeptons · 21/05/2018 22:34

Glad others think it’s a worthwhile initiative. I think it’s an amazing idea. Unfortunately it seems like both the Twitter & Facebook pages haven’t been active for the last couple of years. I wonder what happened.

It looks like a great initiative, and it does seem a shame that their social media is way out of date.

QuarksandLeptons · 22/05/2018 10:56

It is part of the REACH project which is still active.

"This campaign is part of the REACH Project (or REACH), which is funded by the European Commission. It aims to raise awareness of trafficking as a form of violence against women and girls"

They just keep letting these bastards out, to keep killing/raping women.

This!! The Justice system fails to recognise serial offenders until too late.

Lookalike a great initiative - hope they carry on

SeahorsesAREhorses · 23/05/2018 06:14

So many progressive policies are anti women, almost all organisations centre men. We need men to speak against this, they are listened to.

Floisme · 23/05/2018 07:37

I hadn't heard about this. Good for him and good luck.

R0wantrees · 25/05/2018 11:56

NB my post above 21/5 at 11:36 mistakenly describes a parliamentary report (from APPG 'Prostitution and the Global Sex Trade') as a 'Govt. report'.
The article I was referring to in The Independent discusses the background.

Apologies.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 25/05/2018 12:05

The justice and policing system appears to be very poor at recognising what a high risk indicator violence against women is for all sorts of future crimes. I read with amazement this morning that one of the two 15yos convicted yesterday of plotting a school massacre had forced his girlfriend (presumably the same age, they were 14 when arrested) to let him carve his name onto her back. He's been convicted of wounding.
