We are hoping to ascertain interest in gender critical science discussions and activities. Please let us know here or via pm if you are scientifically or medically trained and wish to join our discussions and /or activities.

Why? Because it is a kind offer but no one knows who anyone is here so best to be cautious.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 15/05/2018 18:51

Just wanted to say that this is a great idea Flowers

flowersonthepiano · 15/05/2018 19:22

I'm kind of out there now anyway (real life name account on twitter). I don't plan on saying anything I wouldn't say and be willing to defend irl.

I do understand that some may need to be careful because of work etc., or be worried about becoming a target for TRAs. (and think it's ridiculous and telling that anyone should be made to feel like that).

For the record, noting that we all have biases, and I am certainly approaching this with my own, I intend to use my scientific training to do my best to look at all the evidence and not cherry pick what suits my agenda.

I think terfulike needs to make a decision on how to proceed re. platform, given this was her idea Smile

Crackisback · 15/05/2018 19:38

I’d be interested. I’m a medic. Tbh I think gender critical views are pretty mainstream in the medical profession.

ErrolTheDragon · 15/05/2018 19:43

look at all the evidence and not cherry pick what suits my agenda.

If our science doesn't do that, it isn't science.

Quite. But its so easy to do...

Crackisback great to hear it! Smile Do you think many medics worry about being perceived as gender critical?

BTW, we could really do with people with institutional affiliations that give them access to journals. I'm finding lots of stuff I would like to look at behind paywalls and am missing my University login privileges Sad

Writersblock2 · 15/05/2018 20:04

Poss. interested. Psych background with a preference for stats.

flowersonthepiano · 15/05/2018 20:09

OOOOH! A statistician Grin

Terfulike · 15/05/2018 20:57

Let's go with Reddit.
Flowers I have a uni login so may be able to get some stuff you need.

Terfulike If you send me a message on Reddit once you've signed up (I'm OldmanOfTheWeb on there), I can show you the subreddit and Wiki I created if that's useful. If it's not wanted, I'll delete it. I don't mind.

MsBeaujangles · 15/05/2018 21:43

I supervise doctoral research and teach research methodology and appraisal techniques. I have access to medical and social sciences databases and have full access to articles in psychological and medical journals, so am happy to help people access papers

Terfulike · 15/05/2018 21:48

Thankyou so much MsBeau

Not a scientist here but I just wanted to say I think this is fantastic. Well done you lot.

Wanderabout · 15/05/2018 23:48

For the record, noting that we all have biases, and I am certainly approaching this with my own, I intend to use my scientific training to do my best to look at all the evidence and not cherry pick what suits my agenda.

Like actual science and everything.

Ereshkigal · 16/05/2018 00:17

I'm not a scientist but I work in a scientific institution and can follow studies etc and have thoroughly researched all angles of the gender debate. Also have journal access.

flowersonthepiano · 16/05/2018 00:24

Like actual science and everything

Are you implying that I didn't need to say that explicitly?

I appreciate i may have expressed it in a bit of a twatty way, but it really does need saying. I worked in academia for ~20 years. In Russell group universities and cherry picking is rife, at all levels, including among senior academics.

flowersonthepiano · 16/05/2018 00:26

Thanks MsBeaujangles and Ereshkigal for responding to my journal access plea

Waddlelikeapenguin · 16/05/2018 00:29

I dont think I am a pure enough scientist any more to be of any use to you all but I would love to help - make you all tea & cake G&T & do the photocopying (i nearly wrote faxing Grin ).

Brilliant women with brilliant plans Flowers

Waddlelikeapenguin · 16/05/2018 00:30

& I worked in big pharma for a decade; cherry picking data & bias in reporting is almost human nature....

MsBeaujangles · 16/05/2018 06:51

A good systematic review addresses issues of cherry picking. The right search terms and clear inclusion and exclusion criteria address these concerns. So long as authors provide sufficient information about their search strategy and use a robust appraisal tool that is consistently applied to all included papers, then you should be able to see whether cherry picking has taken place or not.

boatyardblues · 16/05/2018 07:03

Non scientist here, but I am bery excited about what you are doing. Will you be doing potted lay summaries? Eg: “This study is often presented as evidence of x but the study cohort was too small to give statistically definitive answers and the selection criteria were poorly defined, so it can’t be safely used to claim x.”

boatyardblues · 16/05/2018 07:03

Bery = very. I am not Manuel...

GingerPCatt · 16/05/2018 07:18

I’m a medical librarian and would be interested in helping find articles and I have access to a lot of medical databases.
I’ve lurked on the feminism boards but haven’t really posted much here.
