Free Speech / No Platforming at Universities

Sam Gyimah, the universities minister, will announce tough guidance on the issue at a meeting today, calling attempts to silence debate “chilling”.

He will accuse some student societies of “institutional hostility” to certain unfashionable but perfectly lawful views. A “murky” legal landscape, with guidance from various regulators, lets zealots censor those with whom they disagree, Mr Gyimah will say.

Good! Like many others I'm so conflicted right now - I'd prefer a party that offers more of a safety net than the Tories but, of the main parties, they seem to be the one that most understands the importance of free speech.

The Lib Dems, Greens and Labour seeming happiness to gift them the mantle of Defenders of Free Speech seems a crazy misjudgement to me but, then again, maybe the authoritianism was always there but it's the rise of Corbyn plus the GC issue (amongst others) that's really made it stand out.

Thanksforthatamazingpost · 03/05/2018 14:46

good.

R0wantrees · 03/05/2018 14:46

The link above doesn't have the full interview. the issue was discussed twice, at approx 8.45 and 9.20 (I think) by Julia H-B.

Brendan O'Neill's latest piece on the Left essentially ceding free speech to the Right. He's also aware that the GC point of view is regarded as wrongthink.

THis is a cross-party issue.

I’ve always been left of centre, I’m very unhappy with austerity politics and the antipathy to the welfare state. I’ve never previously voted Tory.

BUT... to me these issues of free speech, safeguarding children and erosion of women’s rights are a generational issue. I think we are at a crossroads here where we either renew our vows with the core values that made the UK great or we go down a dark road.
Because I think the UK does have core values, however uncool that idea may be. I think they are; among others,

A general desire for decency - fair play basically.

A strong streak of irreverence, of Debate and of challenging of ideas - long history of political cartooning for example, from Hogarth to spitting image. The British have always been hard on ideologues, idiots and despots. We can’t lose that. We can’t have sacred cows we are afraid of taking the piss out of, or questioning.

A rejection of extremism: we never really had a strong extremist bent - the restoration happened, we had no truck with fascism, or nazism - even though small pockets of favour to these ideas was here the majority rejected it totally. Even now we are one of the few EU countries with no serious extremist political parties (UKIP are a joke.)

So well done Mr. Gyimah. This needs doing. I shall follow with interest.

You're quite right, Miller weakens my argument somewhat. I do wonder if Greening's departure was due to the Tories wanting to walk this back a bit.

And Bowl I agree - it's pretty much been reduced to a battle of first principles such as free speech for me right now.

I truly believe this is cross party and a wider issue than Westminster.

There are questions to ask about the extent of lobbying, creation of legislation and policies etc

James Kirkup's article yesterday is definitely worth reading:
