www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2018/apr/29/violent-misogyny-not-confined-to-internet-incels

I couldn't see how to comment on it. If I had, I'd have thanked her for this.

Was just about to start a thread. Excellent article by Catherine Bennett. So glad that someone is pointing out the misogyny and violence towards gender critical women in the self-ID debate. Some of the language used to silence and shut down debate is appalling.

Ekphrasis · 29/04/2018 08:50

Very good.

She's cleverly made a connection between 'incels' and the whole cotton ceiling thing, without being overt.

BlackeyedSusan · 29/04/2018 09:19

It is about time that more men were aware of this and called it out as unacceptable. Women are aware , not always able to call it out.

LangCleg · 29/04/2018 09:35

Oh, good article. And you know - finally.

When the only significant difference between an extremist MRA and an extremist TRA is the choice of avatar between frog and anime character, there's a problem. It's about time the commentariat actually noticed.

Merchfach · 29/04/2018 09:56

Men aren't interested in the debate. I've tried raising it many times and the answer is always 'I'm not like that and not all men are like that' (NAMALT) usually followed by angry or hurt comments about how women are always trying to tar men with the same brush. I know in my world, where I have asked men to speak up and intervene when they see other men behaving badly, I've ended up feeling as if I'm driving them into the arms of the Men's Rights Activists. Mention that 90% of violent crimes are committed by men and they really, really want you to shut up about it because they don't want to go there. Only when we can break this taboo of talking openly about the violence inflicted on women and the world by men can we start to change it — but in my experience few men are willing to think, let alone say anything, about it.

Excellent article. I've not understood the left wing medias silence on this issue. Threatening violence against other people, especially for just having different opinions from you is never OK. Men threatening women is part of this.

Floisme · 29/04/2018 12:05

I agree with Merch - I find that even the most decent of men just don't want to talk about it. Wouldn't surprise me if someone turns up on this thread soon to tell us off.

If we can't name the problem we're never going to fix it.

Wanderabout · 29/04/2018 13:32

This is a great article, highly recommend reading it.

This captures perfectly how violently dehumanising 'TERF' is, and how little difference there is to the way it is used and the way so-called 'incels' talk and think about women. And of course then act.

Photographs of one vitrine, featuring a red bespattered T-shirt reading: “I punch terfs!” (trans-exclusionary radical feminists/women who disagree with me), may have struck a chord with anyone following the current UK debate about the government’s self-ID proposals. To date, threats, from one side, which echo, inescapably, some of those in the pro-Rodger playbook (“die in a fire terf scum”) have yet to generate comparably widespread concern, even after a woman was punched. Her assailant had earlier expressed the wish to “fuck up some terfs”.

WineGummyBear · 29/04/2018 13:37

Excellent piece.

DuddlePluck · 29/04/2018 13:47

Agreed, was delighted to see this article. I'm sure she'll be inundated with abuse for it, so off to try & find her on Twitter to convey my appreciation...

RedToothBrush · 29/04/2018 14:00

Mayday 4 women @ mayday4women
Want a demonstration of who is oppressed (women) and who isn’t (men-who-call-themselves-women) in this debate? Just look what happens when women speak truth:
Catherine Bennett, author of the Graun article on Incels+Trans violence, has already been driven off Twitter. Within 1 day

R0wantrees · 29/04/2018 14:03

I'm sure she'll be inundated with abuse for it

Gooliana is appalled...

Popchyk · 29/04/2018 14:03

The Lib Dem LGBT Twitter account has decried the article as transphobic.

link

Catherine Bennet in the Guardian links the Toronto murders, Jack the Ripper, and trans people wanting to sign statutory declarations to get new birth certificates.

Press transphobia is getting increasingly virulent while slowly losing the small grip on reality it had.

Meanwhile the UK trans community is traumatised, and every day the GRA consultation is displayed that trauma gets worse and worse.

Bennett should be utterly ashamed of herself, as should those who thought publishing her absurd and hate filled nonsense was remotely acceptable.

trickyboots · 29/04/2018 14:09

It's a good article. Increasing amounts of men are seemingly feeling disenfranchised. And we know know that women pay the price when men become insecure. Important to shed light on this.

RedToothBrush · 29/04/2018 14:14

The LGBT LDs have been trying to start a fight online all day.

R0wantrees · 29/04/2018 14:39

There is a comment by Mayday4Women that Catherine Bennett has been 'driven off' twitter today as a consequence of this article.

Floisme · 29/04/2018 15:19

So a woman writes an article about threats of violence to women on social media.... and is driven off social media?

AssignedPuuurfectAtBirth · 29/04/2018 15:39

And an involuntary brainless comments on it

No puns please

CertainHalfDesertedStreets · 29/04/2018 15:52

Honestly I do sometimes wonder at what point in the transition the ability to see irony, as it jumps up and down on your computer keyboard delightedly slapping its bollocks on your forehead, is removed.

Wanderabout · 29/04/2018 16:07

The Guardian's narrative seems to be imploding.

Journalist points out specific violent, language and behaviour of some TRAs and some incels towards women. TRAs go nuts because this reflects badly on their community. Thus reflecting badly on the community by not doing what any reasonable person would do, and denounce and distance yourself from it.

Things fall apart, the centre cannot hold. You can't put a TERFblocker on the Guardian.

There are plenty of people holding the space for rational, respectful, evidence based debate of how the issues affect everyone.

GinGinGin for Catherine Bennet in the meantime.

Ekphrasis · 29/04/2018 16:08

I can't be arsed to post screen shots but yes, the tra comments spectacularly demonstrate exactly what she's talking about.

Ekphrasis · 29/04/2018 16:08

Caved.

Quickest cave ever Grin I took even longer than that to give into demands for Paw Patrol today (and believe me I caved early...)
