Somebody suggested this on another thread - sorry can't remember who, but I thought it was a good idea.
So far I think I'm right in saying that:
Marks and Spencer don't have sex segregated changing rooms
Primark don't have sex segregated changing rooms
Next have got rid on their female toilets.
Have I got these right? Any others to add?

But men can do that now if they really want to. They're not going to suddenly apply for a GRC to do it

Ah, the old "it happens already" argument. I'll just leave my house unlocked then, after all, burglars find a way into homes anyway.

Ineedacupofteadesperately · 14/06/2018 22:26

Also, it's not just about safety, it's about dignity. My pre-teen daughter already doesn't like getting changed in front of boys/ men. She is worried about menstruation. She would be upset if she went into a space labelled "women" and found a man. These policy changes are specifically protecting those men who don't want women or girls to be able to protest their presence.

And yes, let's not bother with locks on houses or cars or airport security because the thieves / terrorists will always find a way anyway.......

Ah, the old "it happens already" argument. I'll just leave my house unlocked then, after all, burglars find a way into homes anyway.

I didn't say it was ok or didn't matter. There is no evidence that making it easier to get a GRC would mean offences would happen more. A man doesn't need a GRC to dress as a woman and go into a shop changing room, which was what this thread was about. You can't ask to see a GRC anyway so how will that make it worse?

Don't leave your house deliberately unlocked otherwise it will just increase the risk that a burglar does get in.

Supermatch Game,

I am sure that many transgender people discretely use changing rooms/prisons/etc of the sex they identify with. The issue for me, and I know others have a different position, is whether they cause problems or risk the safety of others. A change in policy for me would mean that if I found myself in a female changing room with an exhibitionist naked male-bodied person, I would want to be able to call security/reception etc to remove them. But equally I would want access by male bodied people able to be denied to any group of girls or vulnerable women, should whoever is in charge feel there could be a risk. So if there were a school group in a communal changing room, girl guide camps, accomodation for gymnasts, prisons, hostels etc.

Self ID would take away the ability to restrict women's spaces to female bodied people.

As you say: Don't leave your house deliberately unlocked otherwise it will just increase the risk that a burglar does get in.

OrchidInTheSun · 20/09/2018 09:41

Keeping an eye out for H&M after they responded in a sycophantic way to this 'non-binary' wanker who had a hissy fit when told that their presence in the women's changing rooms was upsetting women customers

Back to thread.

I woud be interested in knowing who funds/sponsors Mermaids. I have already stopped buying Lush. If Barclays really do sponsor them I will close my account.

Melanippe · 20/09/2018 09:50

Isn't "Oh, well I'll leave my front door unlocked because burglars" the kind of thing rape apologists say when women dress in ways they deem to be attractive to rapists?

Anyway, as you were.

Needmoresleep · 20/09/2018 09:51

Ah, answered my own question:

"We applied for funding to support our Plans for the next 3 years and received
significant funding grants as follows
Children in Need —April 2016, £128k over 3 years
Leathersellers —May 2016 £640k over 4 years
Awards far All —July 2016. £10k for one year
Department af Education - October 2016, £35k over 2.5 years
We have developed relationships with a number of companies, and are the Financial Conduct Authority's and Herbert Smith Freehills' Spansored Charity of the year. We are working in partnership with the LGBT networks for Lloyds Bank and Barclays Bank, and are discussing ongoing partnership working with a number of ether organisations for 2017. These organisations have assisted us
financially and with professional development support, venue use and
volunteer recruitment."

At minimium, given the Kids Company fiasco, I assume that Penny Mordaunt might like to know how much public money is going into Mermaids.

TerfsUp · 20/09/2018 10:01

"Topshop ordeal"? Get a grip.

Needmoresleep · 20/09/2018 10:12

Nah, any trip to Top Shop with a teenage daughter is an ordeal. The Oxford Circus one, with a sulky French exchange called Fanny, who refused to try speak English, goes down as one of the all-time lows of parenting.

Co op.
FCA is interesting.

wrenika · 21/09/2018 10:21

Very handy thread - now I know exactly where to support. ;)

MIdgebabe · 21/09/2018 10:23

Super, ever watched a man head towards the ladies in a crowded pub..
.hear the roar " no mate!" From all corners?

That society enabled protection gets lost with self id

Further, grc today means medical diagnosis which makes it quite hard for men to get a grc

Sex segregation exists for a reason. If people want to debate if that Is still valid , I suggest you start a new thread.

Urban outfitters made me laugh ( accompanying someone) I think their sign said that their changing rooms were unisex , but they spend a lot of words waffling about genedr discrimination and legality

MsMcWoodle · 21/09/2018 10:57

FCA?

OP posts:
Charliethefeminist · 21/09/2018 11:01

I know people who work there. It's actually rather good about non sexism and diversity and treats the issues with intelligence. This will have been a decision out of ignorance and grooming, not misogyny, I feel sure. I wonder if internal representations would make a difference.

Mumminmum · 21/09/2018 11:41

Primark in both Hereford and Wrocester have separated fitting rooms for men and women.

Needmoresleep · 21/09/2018 12:09

Charlie, yes. I had wondered whether a few careful letters pointing out the recent court decision, Mermaid's position on surgical or hormonal intervention for young children etc, might give the FCA, Herbert Smith Freehills etc pause for thought.

Perhaps Transgender Trend, could be offered as a safer alternative.

I don't know how you can boycott the FCA....

My understanding is that diversity training there puts quite a lot of emphasis on transgender issues. Pity as it may cause the GC, who from various surveys can be expected to be a clear majority, to switch off from the overall diversity training process.

Cloudspider · 21/09/2018 12:14

As far as I'm aware lots of large companies use stonewall to do there equal ops / inclusion surveys. Im pressing my energy provider to confirm there position. Most have Twitter accounts so a few more voices would not hurt. Large business are big fence sitters an are well aware of women's spending power.

SPOFS · 21/09/2018 12:20

Sadly, ill no longer be donating to Amnesty or the NSPCC Sad

SirVixofVixHall · 21/09/2018 12:29

I don’t like the separation between transwomen and predators. There are trans predators. There are trans predators right now in women’s prisons. Being trans doesn’t mean you are automatically a decent person. Male people do almost all the sexual assault, voyeurism, paedophilia, and all the rapes. Being male is the issue.
I’m going to talk to Marks and Spencer’s as I spend a reasonable amount there. They really can’t afford to lose women as customers.

Charliethefeminist · 21/09/2018 12:30

I boycotted marks ages ago, even their food, which is irritating.
