San Francisco Library, promoting VAW in the name of 'trans culture'.

Read the introduction to the 'exhibit' here:
sfpl.org/index.php?pg=1032262901

'Trans culture' seems to consist of - axes painted up in the trans flag colours. As well as baseball bats painted in other colours, presumably to 'include' all the genderqueers etc. It includes a (symbolic?) blood-soaked T-shirt with the slogan "I punch TERFs". Not to forget a plaque on the wall with "Die Cis Scum".

Which side of this 'debate' promotes violence against the other, continually? Which side of this 'debate' continually calls for injury and death towards the other? Which side continually claims to be 'the victim' (in classic DARVO style)?

I seriously cannot understand why some people are blinded to what is happening, how one side of this conducts itself, and calls for the death/injury of those who disagree with them. And no, not just a 'small element' of 'activists' - this is now enshrined in an exhibition at a public library! It has been officially sanctioned that this behaviour is legitimate and beyond reproach.

I have been in correspondence with the City Librarian. I received a very nicely written email back...

We appreciate your feedback. The Library provides a venue for community groups to exhibit and spark dialogue on timely social issues. The exhibit in the Hormel LGBTQIA Center showcases artwork created by a local community organization, the Degenderettes Northern California chapter, who are using their artwork and performative art activities to bring visibility to the violence that occurs against transgender people and to generate conversations about this often overlooked issue.

Yesterday, we removed a shirt from the exhibit, a piece of artwork that could be interpreted as promoting violence. Now looking at this exhibit as a whole, with both the artwork and the accompanying descriptive text, the exhibit is within our policy guidelines.

For more information, please see the attached photograph which describes the purpose of the exhibit.

Thank you for bringing your concerns to our attention.

So yes, the t-shirt was removed, but Die Cis Scum remains. I have written again to challenge this.

Oh God, how can anyone be so STUPID?
Baseball bats painted in trans colours and blood spattered 'die cis scum' t shirts aren't a commentary on violence against trans people, they're a threat.

The library has been really suckered in, hasn't it?

MipMipMip · 28/04/2018 15:36

Is there anyone on here who's in America? Surely this must fall under inciting violence and be illegal? I've seen someone from the UK tweet San Francisco police but I don't think they got a reply. An American mymsnetter calling up to report it might get a better response.

thebewilderness · 29/04/2018 02:32

They just keep responding with the same form letter about removing a t shirt and never address the weapons they are displaying that transgender identified males carried to threaten Lesbians at PRIDE.

womanformallyknownaswoman · 29/04/2018 08:15

The concerning aspect to California Law Enforcement is Transgender is a protected minority and somehow that is used to excuse their violence. Reference the Ben Shapiro video where he's threatened by an ex Navy TIM on television (captured on camera), as well as off-set afterwards. He reports it to police who say yes there is a case to answer, but protected minority so prosecution won't proceed.

WTF!! Why is "protected minority" used as a cover to assault and abuse others?

The “descriptive text” is beyond insane - it’s funny how they list all these scary criminal things that TERFs do. Most of the time, when I see someone being called a TERF it’s because they’re doing something like questioning whether a trans woman actually has periods.

I’m sure there are very militant scary TERFs but their overuse of the term, at any woman who dares to question anything, is ridiculous.

FermatsTheorem · 29/04/2018 08:59

That Observer article is very good - well said, Catherine Bennett.

littlevoiceofsanity · 29/04/2018 09:03

The librarian is a trans MtF. Which is why he is promoting it.

haba · 29/04/2018 09:06

You don't think someone at SF libraries has approved this in order to get people to wake up to what TRAs are actually advocating?

The more people that realise how threatening their behaviour is, the more people will do something to stop it?

haba · 29/04/2018 09:07

Ah, x-post with littlevoice. Perhaps not then.

Thanksforthatamazingpost · 29/04/2018 10:16

thank you workingitoutasIgo

If a library is promoting violence against women and girls - first of all I'm appalled that a library is promoting violence of any description - in the name of trans culture, then they are proving the point for us. Trans culture is therefore in favour of violence against women and girls. Anyone who is in favour of trans culture must then also be in favour of violence against women and girls. Is this really the image they want I wonder? And of course, is this also what our august leaders here want?

Sparctopus · 29/04/2018 11:12

There's now a petition on Change.org to get the display removed - not got time to link just now/not sure MN permits links to petitions? But I'm sure if you search for it there you'll find it.

Ereshkigal · 29/04/2018 12:01

Well done Catherine Bennett. No differentiation of this particular brand of male misogyny. With a mention for the UK self ID debate. Brave!

Thanksforthatamazingpost · 29/04/2018 18:32

I signed the petition. It was on 949 so we could get it to 1000 before Homeland if we try.....

MipMipMip · 29/04/2018 18:57

Signed and shared

loudaloneknows · 29/04/2018 19:06

Signed. Up to 980 now.

Thanksforthatamazingpost · 29/04/2018 19:50

past 1000 now but they've set a new target.

Ereshkigal · 29/04/2018 19:53

So glad. I paid to get them to promote it to more people.

hazeyjane · 29/04/2018 20:04

because social media has for so long facilitated the delusion that hate speech, as applied to women, is simply part of the landscape

Very good article. Thank you for the link.

Wanderabout · 29/04/2018 20:20

Signed.

Still can't believe a museum would display an exhibit of weapons and death threats aimed at women and lesbians.

Wanderabout · 29/04/2018 20:22

I mean, if it was shown as a shameful reminder of something to avoid, fine. But this exhibit seems to be about normalising, even glorifying it.

Wanderabout · 29/04/2018 20:24

Has anyone tweeted the Observer article at the museum?
