Influx of Trolls/ Transphobic Posts on These Boards

Over the past week, there's been an influx of new users posting transphobic threads and comments. I suspect that they are doing this, taking a screenshot, and then posting it on Twitter etc to show how "anti-trans" we all are... They seem to come out at night when moderation is slower and so their threads stand for longer.

Is there much we can do about this? It's clear that they're trying to close the discussion down and paint us as transphobic. Maybe we could ask for new posters to not be allowed to start new threads here at night?

I see what you are saying Circle and I certainly don't want to be part of an echo chamber.

However last nights troll didn't just start threads but posted some frankly awful messages across a number of threads. I think I made 5 reports on the same culprit last night.

Given there is already a precedent in the sex topic I don't think an unreasonable ask.

People are free to see the topic, existing 30 day plus members can post - whatever their view.

We do know what the intention of these attacks is and it would be sad to put a delay on posting but if that's a price to protect the debate I'd be willing to accept that.

AornisHades · 21/04/2018 15:55

30 day rule sounds very sensible although there'll probably be a surge of it again 30 days after the moratorium.

BertrandRussell · 21/04/2018 15:57

Yes- a 30 day rule is a good idea.

DarthArts · 21/04/2018 15:57

I don't know if it's possible but a 30 day plus an agreed amount of posts on other areas of MN would be my preference.

AornisHades · 21/04/2018 15:58

I suppose anyone who's de and reregged to sort out any worries about 'interngate' might be affected.

athingthateveryoneneeds · 21/04/2018 15:59

I vote for a 30 day wait for FWR and a daily posting limit.

athingthateveryoneneeds · 21/04/2018 15:59

*posting limit for new users during the 30 day wait to start threads

DarthArts · 21/04/2018 15:59

Yes they would.

But it's not a ban it's just a delay and I'd hope anyone who felt strongly enough to de-reg would understand that.

TerfsUp · 21/04/2018 16:00

I like the idea that someone has to be a member for 30 days before starting a thread, too.

OrchidInTheSun · 21/04/2018 16:01

Yep, am also up for the 30 day rule - I think it would really shut down the transphobes and ploppers

Terfing - might be a good idea to start a thread in Site Stuff, linking to this one?

TopBitchoftheWitches · 21/04/2018 16:02

I agree with a 30 day rule for FWR.
I didn't see what happened last night but I can imagine that the TRA's would make up stuff to screen shot in their favour.

ReluctantCamper · 21/04/2018 16:14

the thing is MNHQ will be quite aware if these posters look fishy, so they'll know the transphobia comes from outside the tent.

the posts will get removed when the mods catch up.

we're a very desirable demographic to advertise to - advertisers would seriously think twice before staying away from mumsnet.

all we have to do is keep our cool and not post anything transphobic (yanno, actual transphobia as opposed to things that contravene #nodebate).

meh. Can't get too excited about this.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 21/04/2018 16:19

the thing is MNHQ will be quite aware if these posters look fishy, so they'll know the transphobia comes from outside the tent

That doesn't matter. The issue is the board being invaded, and then transphobic posts being screen shot before MNHQ deletes them. The screenshots are then used as "proof" that MNHQ are hosting a hate speech site.

Plus it's hard work not biting

ReluctantCamper · 21/04/2018 16:22

bite away. just stay civil.

RealityHasALiberalBias · 21/04/2018 16:22

I’m not arsed if the twitter idiots want to screenshot and squabble on twitter. I don’t use it and their attempts to shut down mumsnet are futile. I don’t doubt that MNHQ and the mods are all over it.

What I am arsed about is how boring it’s getting in here with all the goady posts and everyone bending over backwards to be reasonable to the trolls.

So I’d like a 30 day probation so we can get back to well-intentioned threads.

Trumpdump · 21/04/2018 16:22

Okay, I've posted a thread in site stuff. Let's see what they think.

ReluctantCamper · 21/04/2018 16:23

and hateful shit gets posted all the damn time on AIBU.

The mods catch up and delete it. can't really see the difference.

Pratchet · 21/04/2018 16:24

I think if everyone said 'transphobic, reported, we suspect are creating a screenshot' or some other exact same message, just a whole thread of it, it might help?

UpstartCrow · 21/04/2018 16:25

Would a 'fishing post' meme look like troll hunting?

AornisHades · 21/04/2018 16:26

Another angle is that it would stop anyone joining to post actual transphobic beliefs that they hold if they wrongly believe that MN is the place for them.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 21/04/2018 16:29

I think if everyone said 'transphobic, reported, we suspect are creating a screenshot' or some other exact same message, just a whole thread of it, it might help?

That would just be cropped out of the screenshot. The "section28" screenshot has been cropped so it is completely out of context, yet is being used in many quarters to illustrate just how terrible MN is.

GorgonLondon · 21/04/2018 16:29

I have de-regged and re-regged due to the data breach, so I wouldn't be able to post in FWR for a few weeks. I still support this idea. I certainly don't think new users should be able to start threads.

MsMcWoodle · 21/04/2018 16:32

No new threads for 30 days and no new posters at all at night might cut it.

SirVixofVixHall · 21/04/2018 16:36

Yes I agree too,as on sex, a 30 day rule in FWR. Also I wonder if new threads in FWR could have the first post checked before the thread goes public ? Might not be feasible, but it would be good to stop the deliberate placing of trolling threads.

loveyouradvice · 21/04/2018 16:36

Agree re 30 days... but also think some will wait it out and like the idea of an additional rule - like posting 50 times elsewhere or similar....

Anything to avoid the opportunistic ... ideally something to stop the more determined

Im sure Mumsnet are thinking about it - and Im just darn annoyed that they are having to take the brunt
