Dear MNHQ

I'm very grateful for the commitment to free speech you've publicly taken, and for Justine's courage this week.

A former disgruntled employee of MN is writing on Twitter about the 'transphobia' of MN staff, and calling you TERFs. She is showing a great deal of bias and intolerance towards women with feminist views, this may well be her honest opinion, which is no big deal I suppose, since she is no longer an employee.

At least, it isn't an issue until she calls a shout out to her
'friends who still work at MN' to report and take down posts by 'transphobic scum', by which she appears to be referring to any poster objecting to being called TERF by her friend.

Regardless of the personal views of the MNHQ staff, who should be as free to hold their own views as I am mine, I am disturbed that there may be a small contingent of employees who are invested in unfair moderation and will not be applying fair-handed principles, at least if the claims of this ex-employee are credible.

Can you please give posters some reassurance that the difficult job of fair-handed moderation isn't being abused by the 'friends' of ex-employees who are 'reporting it all' and taking down posts because any gender criticism means the poster is 'transphobic scum'?

Thank you.

So long as JHB isn't a member of C, should be ok ...

ReanimatedSGB · 18/04/2018 17:43

In the hope of reassuring some MNers:
When the Jeffrey thing happened, I was one of the people who the little fuckers attempted to SWAT. The email address I use for MN is not one that reflects my real name in any way and the police seemed to believe that they only got anywhere near me because I commented under another nickname elsewhere - but the trolls could not find me, and nor could the police without a lot of trouble.

So you may not be in too much danger.

merrymouse · 18/04/2018 17:43

At this point, I think it is really important that we don't all go after Emma Healey. MN need to sort out the legal position and communicate with anybody involved, but everybody else is operating with incomplete information.

The trouble is, the harder you lock down an environment, the harder it is for people to do their jobs

This. Every action has an equal and opposite reaction, and the ways that staff find to work around your protections may be worse, in many and varied ways not including only wasted time, than the problem you set out to solve.

Juells · 18/04/2018 17:44

plus what we know about her from her time at MNHQ,

I'm sure she was absolutely charming as she gathered her information and screenshots.

Juells

The link you posted is to the Irish equivalent of the ICO.

In the UK, the practice is to file the first report within 24 hours but after you've gathered useful information, not immediately upon becoming aware of the breach.

FeministBadger · 18/04/2018 17:47

People on twitter are already saying that they've reported her so it seems that ship has sailed.

AssignedPuuurfectAtBirth · 18/04/2018 17:47

I agree Its but it's going to be in the news so they will probably find out. But no need to put the boot in

crunchymint · 18/04/2018 17:47

She hasn't deleted her twitter account, she has simply changed the settings so only those who she wants to read it, can do so.

FeministBadger · 18/04/2018 17:47

Sorry, reported her to her employers rather than ICO / anyone else.

RefuseToDenounceBiology · 18/04/2018 17:48

The unhappy lot of handmaidens everywhere - they end up in the shit.

Indeed.
They end up getting thrown out like the rubbish... then the penny drops ... Oh! ..I was being used..

sorenipples · 18/04/2018 17:48

Given the screen shots of posts could have been taken from a non mod view, you have to wonder if the choice of view was deliberate. She may not have intended to release personal data, but was this meant to be a warning shot to indicate that mumsnet had been beached and anything posted may not be as anonymous as posters expect? I.e. flagging thay there are TRA mods who can access user data. Perhaps the goal is to limit debate by fear. There is no need for Emma and associates to actually track users or use any obtained data or indeed have actually obtained more data than in those screen shots, just plant the fear that they could. Reminds me of someone else who spoke about "pretty data".

I have virtually no online presence outside of this forum. I don't do social media and I don't post anywhere under my real name.

So if I am doxxed, or I am targeted by TRAs, I will know how that information became available and I will take legal action.

merrymouse · 18/04/2018 17:49

Eh? Where is she working? Why on earth wouldn't we inform them about what she has done? She has put women at risk for their beliefs, breaching their privacy because she doesn't agree with their opinions. Her employer has a right to know.

As the former employer, MN are in a far better position to do this than we are and they can give a more complete picture of any wrong doing. I think it is going to make it more difficult to deal with her through the proper channels if she is the victim of a social media pile on.

Yes - it is supposed to be chilling.

Twats.

Springnowplease · 18/04/2018 17:51

I hope the police get hold of her devices before she deletes the evidence.

BarrackerBarmer · 18/04/2018 17:51

I expect her employer will find out without any assistance, but if there is a concerted campaign to hound her it will be spun as MNetters hound brave whistleblower out of her job"
rather than "MNetters show dignity and restraint regarding woman under investigation for data breach"

TGLWGH

This will be dealt with but I hope, without multiple individuals targeting her. MNHQ and the ICO will take care of it I hope, and keep us informed as to progress.
