Let's start a Mumsnet Counter Boycot

I was just reading about TRA's contacting mumsnets advertisers, threatening a boycott. I also heard about the impact of complaints on the Women's Place meeting in Cardiff that was subsequently canceled. Apparently the Jam Jar Facebook page, where the "We Need to Talk Bristol" event is being held next week has been deluged with bad reviews by TRA's. 1* ratings on social media can can destroy a business. That's not right.

Let's organise counter demonstrations. Write to mumsnets advertisers. Give 5* reviews to venues hosting gender critical events. Let people know that we care about these things.

1 star ratings as a punitive act becomes obvious pretty fast.
Organizing a defamation campaign seems a fools gambit.
And yet here we are.

Mildlyattractivebetty · 15/04/2018 03:41

I feel very uneasy about this - feels like stooping to their level somehow, it’s a bit manic. Would it not be best just to let them get on with it, and concentrate efforts on maintaining the position of wanting to discuss issues?

DJLippy · 15/04/2018 04:15

TGLWGH Write messages saying how important this place is to us, why we want to discuss GRA. Positive messages thanking advertisers for continued support of mumsnet. Gentle reminders of our spending power. Trans right activists don't buy nappies - mums do! I think we have more economic power than we realise.

The TRA's are that daft they're probably targeting " feminine hygiene" producing companies. I can't believe such a tiny minority is allowed to cause such a fuss.

My view is that Twitter is the echo chamber and that should be the first place to boycott.

womanformallyknownaswoman · 15/04/2018 06:34

I have advised all I know - women are 51% of population and make 80% of all consumer purchasing decisions. Trans are around 1% and TRAs even smaller percentage. There's 12m women on MN.

As a supermarket or corporate - who would you want on your side??? Mail all large supermarkets, advertisers on here etc and tell them to do the maths… every mail counts

And mention it at Customer Service of any large store when you next go shopping - ask them to feed it back to their HQ - tell them women collectively have a lot of purchasing power and we will use it if they allow TRAs to silence legitimate dissent and discussion

TRAs are thugs using mob tactics to stop discussion about keeping the safeguarding we and our children need and that is already in law. We want to keep what we have - what's so wrong with that?

UnexpectedItemInShaggingArea · 15/04/2018 06:47

I have advised all I know - women are 51% of population and make 80% of all consumer purchasing decisions. Trans are around 1% and TRAs even smaller percentage.

But the point of the boycott is that TRAs will I presume try to recruit other women and men to their POV, that they are being persecuted by those nasty Mumsnet feminists, and anyone who doesn't support them is transphobic

If any Mumsnet advertisers are reading this - I am going to quadruple my spending on products advertised on Mumsnet, and throw recommendations and five star reviews around like confetti as long as you continue to support this wonderful, important, sweary place.

RogerAllamsFangirl · 15/04/2018 07:42

djlippy and unexpected, you have the right of it. I agree.

TerfsUp · 15/04/2018 08:48

I prefer to be positive toward advertiser and companies rather than be negative. When you throw mud, it sticks.

TerfsUp · 15/04/2018 08:48

Sorry - meant to say it sticks to the thrower, too.

AncientLights · 15/04/2018 09:52

I never even notice the advertising here. Must be more curious. Then I can message my support.

whathaveiforgottentoday · 15/04/2018 10:12

I'd prefer not to use negative approaches. Let's not drop down to their level.

Thanksforthatamazingpost · 15/04/2018 10:15

Not for me. Same concerns as previous posters.

Badgerthebodger · 15/04/2018 10:49

I am really really pleased that advertisers continue to support MN but I cannot say I will spend more in Missguided on their Barbie range which for some reason seems to be the only advert I get Grin Not sure I’d even get one toe into anything they sell, but brava for supporting MN!

SianRunner · 15/04/2018 10:57

Are there any advertisers in particular who are worth contacting and praising for sticking with Mumsnet and free speech?

Elendon · 15/04/2018 11:23

That's a great idea SianRunner

I would like to know the companies who ignored this and then support them.

Positive action means positive results.

sorenipples · 15/04/2018 11:54

Like other posters I would prefer a positive action. Also thinking pragmatically if advertisers experience a negative impact by withdrawing from mumsnet that is likely to discourage new advertisers. We want to support mumsnet so need to think carefully about the impact of our actions.

Ultimately the power of the "TRA" lobby is their belief we are on the wrong side of history and that there is strong public opinion against allowing our debate. So perhaps the most effective solution is to talk openly in real life and explain the concern is ensuring current sex based provisions are not eroded.

As an aside I think it is a shame that the only forum within mumsnet is FWR because in this context everything comes down to WAWAG whereas in a more general forum other concerns would sit more easily and then maybe mumsnet would seem less like an echo chamber.

KittTheCar · 15/04/2018 11:57

Usually ignore ads will have a bit of a look!

KittTheCar · 15/04/2018 11:58

Oh lol I'd have to switch my adblocker off! That's why I dont' notice them Grin

AssignedPuuurfectAtBirth · 15/04/2018 12:05

Well I turned my adblocker off for mumsnet today. And many others have said they did the same.

I will support mumsnet advertisers.

I will not buy from any company that threatens another company, especially where it stifles freedom of speech.

I make 99.9% of the purchases and the purchasing decisions for my household, with the exception of my husband's clothing.

Pissing off women or telling them to shut the fuck up is not very sensible

Beyond11cisRetinol · 15/04/2018 12:12

Lots of adblockers have been turned off today Grin

I generally ignore ads (though I buy a lot of things through mn recommendations), but I pledge to click through and buy from at least one mn ad this week!

UpstartCrow · 15/04/2018 12:16

I'll turned off my adblockers for MN. If it helps then I will click through on some of the links.

AssignedPuuurfectAtBirth · 15/04/2018 12:29

Interested to know who makes the decisions in your house...

SianRunner · 15/04/2018 12:53

I'm happy to support the sponsors of MN, too, e.g. Lidl (recipes section).

rememberthetime · 15/04/2018 13:01

The best way to support mn is to click on the ads. Even if you don't buy. The analytics will show where each click comes from and will indicate to the advertiser that mn is boosting their website views significantly. Of course they will also see what percentage of those clicks lead to sales but inevitably more website visits lead to increased profit.
The important thing is that the advertiser will see exactly where the increased traffic is generated and will increase their advertising spend accordingly.

Chaosandchocolate · 15/04/2018 13:26

Internet idiot.... The ads I see are based on my browsing/purchasing - not sponsors. Where do i see Mumsnet ads?

Currently a cheapie trainers website mandm and an ad for "The Week" and Trainline....all websites I've been using rather than MN?
