Let's start a Mumsnet Counter Boycot

I was just reading about TRA's contacting mumsnets advertisers, threatening a boycott. I also heard about the impact of complaints on the Women's Place meeting in Cardiff that was subsequently canceled. Apparently the Jam Jar Facebook page, where the "We Need to Talk Bristol" event is being held next week has been deluged with bad reviews by TRA's. 1* ratings on social media can can destroy a business. That's not right.

Let's organise counter demonstrations. Write to mumsnets advertisers. Give 5* reviews to venues hosting gender critical events. Let people know that we care about these things.

I've just posted this on the Justine thread:

"I will also positively endorse all the sponsors that stick with Mumsnet too. Mumsnetters have considerable spending power - let's use it positively rather than talking about boycotts."

Let's go positive affirmation - WTGLWGH Smile

Agreed. I would much rather do this than boycott. I seem to be boycotting a number of my previously favoured shops as it is!

if you decide with withdraw your business tell them and what - same for if you actively support a business - either way tell them and why

DJLippy · 15/04/2018 18:03

Yes Boycott not the best choice of words, couldn't think how to word it, (counter-boycott/lovebomb?) that's what happens when you start threads at 4am!

I will be using a generally positive approach - I’ve removed adblocker from this site and if I do buy anything from sites that I’ve seen advertised here I will make sure I do it via a click through.

However, if I become aware of a company or group who have actively removed advertising from MN over this issue I will be boycotting them, I will be writing to them to explain why and I will be mentioning why I do not buy from them any more to anyone who asks.

I have already set up a subscription to Private Eye, which id fancied for a while but their recent GC cartoons have made that decision easy. I’m also considering an online subscription to the times. I ditched my guardian subscription a few years ago over their misogyny and victim laddering and I’m no longer a labour party member.

I won’t one star review or abuse anyone or anything like that but I will vote with my purse and I will let them know why, plus I will proactively support companies that do advertise here.

I feel that’s a balanced approach.

I will have a go but if it makes use of the site unsusable then im turning it back on

That's a great approach hypermice Having removed my ad blocker for Mumsnet today I will also look at clicking through from here.

I have now had a Times account for over 6 months and don't regret it at all. It's not the right wing cesspit that I thought it might be - and even the many older right wing posters below the line are (generally) less aggressive and hostile that I saw on the Guardian. And if you wander about the site there are some really lovely articles with heartwarming posts underneath. I don't regret cancelling my Guardian subscription for a split second.

Hypermice · 15/04/2018 19:22

I’m disgusted by the guardian these days. It’s the left wing daily mail. The comments are a cesspit. There are a few great journos left on there - it’s a shame their fantastic investigative journalism has to share a space with the apologist tosh they publish.
The Times is a little right of what I consider my core politics to be, but the quality of the writing is excellent and the general tone is more of critical thinking rather than the strange ‘we must rank all victims’ shit the graun have going on. It just seems a more mature outlook.

This whole issue is actually making me rethink those core politics. I’m still left in the sense of wanting a fair society but the way labour have dealt with the TRA pressure has made me think carefully about how the left exerts social pressure and polices thought as well - I’m sure there’s a whole set of correct terms to express what I mean but I’m a mere scientist rather than a political type.

Anyway, I suppose one should always be questioning ones stance on issues and willing to change ones mind, and I certainly have had a seachange in political thinking triggered by this whole affair.

Time for me to post my usual diatribe against The Guardian. It is a rag whose fiery flaming financial death cannot come quickly enough.

DJLippy · 15/04/2018 20:58

If you want to support venues hosting gender critical events here is a link for the Jam Jar in Bristol hosting the We Need to Talk About Kevin event in Brighton this Thursday

Positive reviews and messages of support much appreciated I'm sure

Am taking on board the positive advice given on this thread and have turned off adblocker for Mumsnet. Shall click through to anything that interests me, etc.
Have so, so much appreciation for the FWR board in particular.
