Australia protesting Laurel Hubbard

It was only a matter of time. Do you think that other countries will now start asking questions about the commonwealth and olympics?

Camilla Long has written about this in the Sunday Times today.

What a crock of shit: totally unfair to women athletes.

QueenLaBeefah · 08/04/2018 20:58

I really hope Laurel "wins" and this debate is brought to the wider public.

harpyone · 08/04/2018 21:12

Australia have a cheek protesting imo. They have allowed hannah mouncey, to join womens aus rules football. I think all sports bodies will go with it if it suits them and their chances, and protest if it doesnt. They are crapping on women too.

ALittleBitOfButter · 08/04/2018 21:14

Why won't the media say the testosterone levels allowed are still four times higher than a woman's level?

IndominusRex · 08/04/2018 21:17

Oh the Camilla Long piece is excellent

MargeH · 08/04/2018 21:19

The Times seems to have some GC writers

Viago · 08/04/2018 21:21

Is anyone able to do a share token?

MargeH · 08/04/2018 21:36

Camilla Long today

A power jerk in the weightlifting

Why is Laurel Hubbard, a 39-year-old male-to-female transgender athlete allowed to compete in the female weightlifting category at the Commonwealth Games in Australia?

The mere facts beggar belief. Hubbard, a Kiwi formerly named Gavin, is so muscular she has beaten every other woman in her category by 19kg. While the average age for success in this sport is 24, Hubbard is 15 years older than that. Games officials have claimed that her levels of testosterone are acceptable for competing; human rights campaigners have insisted Hubbard be treated on merit and that “participation in sport and physical activity” is a human right.

What about the human rights of other contestants not to be beaten by someone who, as an expert put it, has always had the advantage of a bigger heart, bigger lungs, bigger bones, more overall body power? Why is it OK for Kiwis to present a competitor who has in every way modified her body, but not for the doping Russians? I cannot see the difference between Hubbard and, say, the East German shot putter Heidi (now Andreas) Krieger, who at least had no idea the pills her coach gave her weren’t “loffley liddle vidamins”, but anabolic steroids.

Springtrolls · 08/04/2018 21:50

I forgot all about the Australian player.
Surely the human rights of Gavin/Laurel were met when competed as a man?

Was also wondering about the previous athletes who were caught doping, and the legalities. I know if I was them I would start some action even if it was out of principle. You can have your medals stripped after you have won them, so surely you can have them re-issued?

If it opens a few more eyes, it can only be a good thing. Hopefully one day they will strip the medals from the TIMs and award them to the rightful winners.

PollyBanana · 08/04/2018 22:11

It's daft that athletes get banned for failing a drugs test if they take an over the counter cold remedy, but it's ok to compete as a woman with male musculoskeletal and cardiovascular systems, and x4 the testosterone levels compared to other female competitors

CommanderDaisy · 08/04/2018 22:22

This is a part of the whole trans debate that infuriates me . The unfairness to women in sport. I hope she "wins" too and there are widespread howls of protest.

2rebecca · 08/04/2018 22:23

Completely agree, unless the situation changes women's sport is doomed. It will be men identifying as men and men identifying as women winning all the medals.
They never won high level stuff as men either. It is extremely unfair and makes me very angry and isn't helping transwomen / women relations. It just fuels resentment and a feeling men are doing it to take over women's stuff and displace us.

yetanothertranswoman · 08/04/2018 22:30

This - it just adds more fuel to the fire, creates more negative headlines and leads to more suspicion.

Bumblebzz · 08/04/2018 22:39

What I can’t get over is the apparent absence of sportsmanship (or should I say sportswomanship) here. How can any such athlete with such an innate advantage really truly believe, deep down, that they are
competing on a level playing field with women. They would have to be literally deluded. I’m surprised female athletes aren’t boycotting their own events, though they absolutely shouldn’t have to.

Bejazzled · 08/04/2018 22:43

Legalised cheating imo

Viago · 08/04/2018 22:58

Thanks MargeH.

Indeed. How does it feel to win a gold when you already know you're much stronger than the competition - and that there's an obvious reason for it? If I decided I was trans-age and competed against 10-year-olds in my sport, I would also win. But it would just be embarrassing.

LH is out with an injury now as LH went for a games record after missing an earlier lift (the tool). So this gets to be swept under the carpet again and LH can go back to being “brave”.

CallingDannyBoy · 09/04/2018 06:54

Damn - sad they are out in a way. It would be a real ‘What the.....’ moment for a to of people.

Igneococcus · 09/04/2018 07:00

I lived in NZ for a few years, dp is kiwi, until Laurel Hubbard I never thought New Zealanders would go along with this kind of bullshit. I always thought fairness was an important principal for kiwis, especially in sport. I wonder what the majority actually think about it. I know what my sil thinks about it (it probably wouldn't pass through any profanity filters).
Come on Kiwis put an end to this charade, this is really no different to Australia bowling underarm.

NotBadConsidering · 09/04/2018 07:18

Just to put that attempted snatch of 132kg into context, it would have placed LH 10th out of 14 in yesterday's men's 94kg category ahead of the clean and jerk. It would have also beaten the previous game's record by 7kg set by the Samoan in 2010.

NotBadConsidering · 09/04/2018 07:21

In addition, the world record female snatch is held by a Russian, who perhaps unsurprisingly has been done for doping.

AltheaorDonna · 09/04/2018 07:27

Well I'm in Oz and there has been a lot of chat in the office today about this. Not one single person I've heard thinks this is ok, they are all seeing it for the unfair nonsense it is. So it is a shame in a way he is out, as I think it might have been a bit of an outrage and given the issues a higher profile. I don't know anyone who approves of the Mouncey decision either.
