The Flying Spaghetti Monster Church.

Anyone heard of this? Have been reading an article and it’s quite fascinating. Some central themes which remind me of the whole self ID debate.

So some schools in America want to start teaching a crazy type of creationism rather than scientific fact and a guy writes a letter saying that if schools were going to teach creationism he also wanted an equal amount of timetabled teaching time for learning about the Flying Spaghetti Monster which is equally as valid as creationism.

I particularly like this;

the Flying Spaghetti Monster is often used as a contemporary version of Russell's teapot—an argument that the philosophic burden of proof lies upon those who make unfalsifiable claims, not on those who reject them.

Never heard of Russell’s teapot before.

Anyway this Spaghetti monster has become so popular it’s now a recognised religion in the Netherlands and New Zealand. I’m off to buy a t-shirt.

Pastafarianism!

MrsJoshDun · 03/04/2018 20:26

I’ve just been telling DH all about it and he’s looking at me like Hmm

I too have been touched by his noodley appendage.

AlexanderHamilton · 03/04/2018 20:28

Dd & her GCSE RE classmates are all fully fledged members!

Welshlovebicuit · 03/04/2018 20:29

been wearing my colander with pride for years.

Skatingfastonthinice · 03/04/2018 20:29

I’ve got the t shirt and celebrate Talk Like A Pirate Day. Pastafarianism has been around for over a decade. Celebrate the noodlinesss!

WhollyFather · 03/04/2018 20:31

'Russell's teapot is an analogy, formulated by the philosopher Bertrand Russell (1872–1970), to illustrate that the philosophic burden of proof lies upon a person making unfalsifiable claims, rather than shifting the burden of disproof to others.

Russell specifically applied his analogy in the context of religion. He wrote that if he were to assert, without offering proof, that a teapot orbits the Sun somewhere in space between the Earth and Mars, he could not expect anyone to believe him solely because his assertion could not be proven wrong.

Russell's teapot is still invoked in discussions concerning the existence of God, and has had influence in various fields and media.'

An Aussie or a new Zealander (can't remember) manages to get their passport pic taken with a colander on their head claiming religious headgear. Which is awesome.

Also look up the pastafarian beliefs in pirates and global warming. We need more pirates to save the world!

VanGoghsLeftEar · 03/04/2018 20:34

It's an official religion in New Zealand.

BossWitch · 03/04/2018 20:34

All hail his glorious noodley appendages!

I didn’t realise that Talk Like A Pirate Day was linked to Pastafarianism. Just thought it was a day to talk like a pirate.

Just mentioned this to DH & kids. DS1 knew all about it. He says someone submitted a passpost photo with a pan on their head, arguing it was their religious head covering (akin to a turban). I don’t know if it’s true and DS1 can’t provide a source.

boatyardblues · 03/04/2018 20:36

Oh, I see BossWitch has already mentioned the passport photo. Maybe it is true after all.

MrsJoshDun · 03/04/2018 20:37

The Wiki link talks about the driving licence photo and I think the passport photo. So it’s true.

OP posts:
AlexanderHamilton · 03/04/2018 20:39

There have been a few people who have sucessfully argued for driving licence photos.

BossWitch · 03/04/2018 20:39

Def true boat, there's loads of examples on Google. Passports, driving licences.

Fishfingersandwichnocheese · 03/04/2018 20:49

Personally I am a member of the church of the Invisible Pink Unicorn.

We have faiths that she is pink and logic tells us that she must be invisible because no one has ever seen her.

ZERF · 03/04/2018 21:31

Dh has just been similarly Hmm to this!

(But he's trying to watch some Netflix series and can't

ZERF · 03/04/2018 21:31

Compute both)

Post fail.

IWearPurple · 04/04/2018 03:52

There was at least one person who became a citizen of New Zealand, as an obvious pastafarian: www.stuff.co.nz/national/99910254/church-of-the-flying-spaghetti-monster-breaks-another-milestone-in-new-zealand

I believe in Anoia, The Goddess of Things That Get Stuck in Drawers.

Oh and the God Offler too.
I'm a sucker for crocodiles (and a good sausage).

Have to say I'm intrigued by the thought of a Pasta GodGrin.

The Turtle Moves...

We're having Offlerian Sacrifice tonight. Not sure whether it's with mash and onion gravy, or chips and beans, but it definitely won't be Inna Bun.

rat onna stick anyone?

MrsUnderwood · 04/04/2018 08:36

I personally praised Anoia this morning when I couldn’t get the fucking cutlery drawer open thanks to a jammed palette knife.
